Lane’s End Surfboard Auction Raises Nearly $50K for PDJF

Lane's End Farm helped raise nearly $50,000 for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) with the auction of 20 hand-crafted surfboards, each individually designed to highlight the nursery's stallion roster.

The surfboards were created in partnership with the Cornett advertising agency and the Torrance, California-based Chili Surfboards. Prior to being auctioned off to the highest bidders, the surfboards were on public display at Breeders' Cup partner hotels in the Del Mar area as well as the racetrack over Breeders' Cup weekend.

John Velazquez, Mike Smith, Drayden Van Dyke and Victor Espinoza were among the jockeys on hand to help promote the surfboards, while Anne Von Rosen, a former jockey who suffered a catastrophic racing injury and is one of the many who benefit from the work of the PDJF, met with Lane's End's Bill Farish.

“Our sincere thanks to everyone who made this auction such a success,” said Farish. “From our project partners to the bidders, we truly appreciate all the hard work and generosity that will ultimately benefit such a worthy cause.”

Added Nancy LaSala, president of the PDJF: “Lane's End has been a remarkable partner. Their commitment to supporting the often-forgotten jockeys who risk their lives for our entertainment and the business of horse racing is second to none and is greatly appreciated.”

Code of Honor Looks to Further Bolster Stallion Resume in Fayette

With a stud career at Lane's End just a few short months away, MGISW Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}) looks to add to his already formidable resume Saturday in Keeneland's GII Hagyard Fayette S. Winner of the 2019 GI Runhappy Travers S. and GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, the Farish homebred captured the GIII Winchester S. in 2020 and placed in several other stakes, including the GI Clark S. Fifth in his seasonal bow in the GI Pegasus World Cup Jan. 23, the chestnut scored a facile victory in the GIII Phillip Iselin S. Aug. 21 and was fourth when last seen in the GI Woodward S., which was run at Belmont Oct. 2.

One of his biggest competitors in this event will be the 3-year-old King Fury (Curlin), who enters off a 13-length demolition of the Bourbon Trail S. at Churchill Sept. 25. Winner of the GIII Stonestreet Lexington S. Apr. 10, the $950,000 FTSAUG buy was a close second in the GIII Ohio Derby June 26. Trainer Ken McPeek was forced to call an audible when a barn quarantine kept King Fury out of the GII Jim Dandy S. and tried him on turf, resulting in a 10th in the Saratoga Derby Invitational S. Aug. 7. He was fifth in the Travers 21 days later.

Independence Hall (Constitution) looks to return to winning ways in this spot. Fourth in the GI Santa Anita H. Mar. 6, he was third in the GII Californian S. Apr. 17 in Arcadia. The dark bay checked in fifth in the GI Pacific Classic at Del Mar Aug. 21 and was second to leading GI Breeders' Cup Classic contender Knicks Go (Paynter) in the GIII Lukas Classic Oct. 2.

Lane’s End To Auction Custom Surfboards For PDJF

Lane's End, one of the world's premier Thoroughbred farms, is thinking beyond the bluegrass for this year's Breeders' Cup with a series of custom surfboards that's equal parts California and Kentucky.

Created in partnership with ad agency Cornett (Lexington, Ky.) and Chilli Surfboards (Torrance, Calif.), these 24 handcrafted surfboards are individually designed to highlight the entire Lane's End roster of world-class stallions.

The unique boards will be on public display at Breeders' Cup partner hotels in the Del Mar area—Hyatt Regency, Fairmont Grand, Lodge at Torrey Pines, and L'Auberge—as well as Del Mar Racetrack Nov. 3-6.

During this time, the boards will be sold to the highest bidders via live online auction and 100 percent of proceeds will be donated to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, an independent charitable organization that provides financial assistance to jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries.

“This cause has been one of the major focuses of my parents' philanthropy,” said Bill Farish of Lane's End Farm. “It's been underfunded for a long time and it's very important to us that we support the often forgotten jockeys who risk their lives for our entertainment and our business.”

As part of the activation, TVG will air a segment filmed in Los Angeles featuring the custom Lane's End surfboards and some of racing's most respected jockeys. Mike Smith, Joe Bravo and Drayden Van Dyke will all receive a surfing lesson from Paul Naret of Chilli Surfboards. Del Mar Racetrack is known around the world as the track “Where the Turf Meets the Surf.” What better way to pay homage to that slogan and the legacy of Lane's End farm than with custom surfboards during the world championships of racing.
