Malibu Moon’s Set Sail Goes Coast to Coast for Maiden Breaking Score

SET SAIL (c, 3, Malibu Moon–Fleet of Gold {SP, $109,892}, by Medaglia d'Oro) was third on debut Feb. 26 in a seven panel maiden over Santa Anita's main track after altering course early and losing second by 1 1/4 lengths. Trying a mile here, the bay Mandella trainee broke on top and never looked back, coasting home much the best by 7 1/2 lengths as the 2-1 second choice over One More Bid (California Chrome). Q B One (Uncle Mo) finished third while 6-5 favorite Bletchley Park (Nyquist) finished a distant fifth.

The winner is the second surviving foal out of the stakes-placed half-sister to Indyan Giving (A.P. Indy), the dam of Champion 2-year-old colt Game Winner (Candy Ride {Arg}) and GI Churchill Downs S. winner Flagstaff (Speightstown). Set Sail has a 2-year-old half-brother by Tapit as well as a 2022 half-sister by Speightstown. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-1, $48,240.

Into Mischief’s Gina Romantica Sparkles on Debut

GINA ROMANTICA (f, 3, Into Mischief–Special Me, by Unbridled's Song) left the gates as a heavy 4-5 favorite in this debut for powerhouse connections. Rating from seventh early on, the $1.025 million KEESEP purchase watched the pack in front jostle for position down the backstretch and through the final turn. Called on for her rally coming into the lane from the far outside, Gina Romantica swooped by her rivals under a confident ride to win by 1 1/4 lengths over Spiked (Unified). Out of Special Me, the pretty bay claims several talented siblings including Stonetastic (Mizzen Mast), MGSW & GISP, $856,062, who was bred back to Gun Runner after producing a filly by him last year; new Lane's End stallion Gift Box (Twirling Candy), GISW, $1,127,060; and Special Forces (Candy Ride {Arg}), MGSW-Can, SP-USA, $409,147. Gina Romantica is the first seven-figure sale for the small, but mighty blue hen Special Me. However, the mare's year-older filly named Meir Point (Medaglia d'Oro) brought $500,000 from Larry Best as a weanling at the FTKNOV sale. First Mare in Foal to Lexitonian

Grade I winner Lexitonian (Speightstown–Riviera Romper, by Tapit), new to the Lane's End roster for 2022, has his first mare confirmed in foal, the farm reported Monday.

The first mare scanned in foal to the GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. hero is Grade I winner Magnificent Song (Unbridled's Song), owned by Calumet Farm. She hails from the immediate family of black-type performers Galileo's Song, Great Barrier Reef, Queen
Daenerys and more.

An earner of over $700,000 in his racing career, Lexitonian stands for $10,000.

Champion Gamine To Visit Quality Road For First Mating

Gamine, the champion female sprinter of 2020 and an Eclipse Award finalist for the same title in 2021, will visit Lane's End resident Quality Road for her first mating, bloodstock agent Donato Lanni announced Feb. 6 on social media.

The 5-year-old daughter of Into Mischief retired with nine wins in 11 starts for earnings of $1,771,500.

Gamine topped the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale after selling to owner Michael Lund Petersen for $1.8 million. She secured the Eclipse Award as champion female sprinter at age three, with victories in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes and Test Stakes, and a capstone score in that year's Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland.

Gamine won the first four starts of her 2021 campaign, ticking off wins in the G3 Las Flores Stakes, G1 Derby City Distaff Stakes, G2 Great Lady M Stakes, and G1 Ballerina Handicap. Her final start saw her finish third in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Del Mar.

Bred in Kentucky by Grace Thoroughbred Holdings, Gamine is out of the stakes-placed Kafwain mare Peggy Jane.

Quality Road, 16-year-old son of Elusive Quality, stands at Lane's End in Versailles, Ky., for an advertised fee of $150,000.

From nine crops of racing age, Quality Road has sired 432 winners and amassed combined progeny earnings of more than $65.2 million.

Quality Road has sired two Eclipse Award winners: Champion 2-year-old filly Caledonia Road and champion 3-year-old female Abel Tasman. Corniche, the winner of last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile, is a finalist – and the presumptive favorite – for champion 2-year-old male of 2021.

He is also responsible for Pegasus World Cup winner City of Light, Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Hootenanny, and Grade 1 winners including Dunbar Road, Bellafina, Spring Quality, Roadster, Salty, Illuminant, and Klimt.
