Royal Ascot Hero Missed The Cut Joins American Trainer John Sadler

The lure of winning top-level dirt races in America has prompted the owners of Missed The Cut (Quality Road) to transfer the Royal Ascot winner from Newmarket trainer George Boughey to John Sadler's California-based barn.

Missed The Cut propelled Boughey onto the big stage when landing the Golden Gates S. Handicap at the royal meeting last year but disappointed as a 13-8 favorite when only managing fourth behind Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the G3 Neom Turf Cup in Saudi Arabia when last seen. 

A decision was made shortly after that Riyadh effort to transfer Missed The Cut to America, where he will now be trained with a dirt campaign in mind, according to Bill Farish of Lane's End Farm, part-owners in the horse. 

“He's joined John Sadler and he is excited to get him,” Farish told TDN Europe on Friday. “Missed The Cut looks wonderful and travelled over well. He's gone through his quarantine and now he's in John's barn. George Boughey did a great job with him and had him in great shape for the trip. It's exciting to get him over here and he doesn't have a lot of miles under him.”

Sam Haggas of Hurworth Bloodstock and Boughey bought Missed The Cut for just 40,000gns from Shadwell at the Tattersalls February Sale in 2022. 

It proved a shrewd investment with Missed The Cut winning three of his first four races, including that Royal Ascot triumph, after which Lane's End bought into the colt. 

On future plans, Farish said, “We're hopeful for Missed The Cut. He trained on the dirt in Saudi Arabia and looked like he really liked it–moved really well on it. We're hopeful that he can be as good or better on the dirt.”

He added, “The idea is to angle him for Grade I races on the dirt if he shows an affinity for it. We have a good ownership group that is hopeful that we can have some fun with him. If not, we can always go back to the turf with him.

“We're just going to see how he gets on. He obviously likes racing over a mile-and-a-quarter and there are a lot of great races over here on the dirt over that distance.”

Both have a Candy Ride connection as the former, who was a $440,000 '21 FTSAUG  purchase by Spendthrift Farm, was sired by him, while the latter's dam, MGSW & MGISP Paid Up Subscriber, claims the stud as her own.

Peter Brant' Army Times was bred by Joseph Allen, who incidently co-owned his dam and was conditioned by Brown and White Birch Farm. Pointing to this spot, Brant's bay colt put forward a bullet four-furlong work Mar. 10 in :47 (1/125). Stablemate Ocasek is not without merits, as his dam Shananies Song (Eltish) has turned out a diverse group of offspring in GSP Bellamentary (Bellamy Road) and a pair full-brothers by Flatter in GSW Favorable Outcome and GSW Mouheeb. Out of Unicorn Girl, champion MGISW Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) was a $95,000 Ylg KEESEP in 2019 and earned almost $3 million on the racetrack. Going for $600,000 at the Mixed KEENOV sale a year later, half-brother OCEAN CITY (American Pharoah) looks to continue that legacy in what will be his second start for Jackie's trainer Steve Asmussen at the Fair Grounds after a fourth place behind a pair of 'TDN Rising Stars' in Bishop's Bay (Uncle Mo) and First Mission (Street Sense) Feb. 18 going six panels. Switching to the grass and ridden by James Graham from the rail, the Westerberg, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor and Derrick Smith-owned bay colt was bred by J&J Stables and Carlo Vaccarezza. Drawing the eight hole with Javier Castellano in-town to ride is first timer for trainer Christophe Clement, MONEY BEETS (City of Light). Quality Road’s Cairo Back With A Bang At Dundalk

Coolmore and Westerberg's 3-year-old colt Cairo (Ire) (Quality Road–Cuff {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), a multiple Classic entry, justified long odds-on favouritism with a comfortable success in Friday's one-mile Listed Patton S. at Dundalk. The homebred bay followed up an August maiden win at the Curragh with a second in the Co. Louth venue's Sept. 30 Listed Star Appeal S. and closed his juvenile campaign with a 2 3/4-length triumph in October's G3 Killavullan S. at Leopardstown. The eventual winner, Aidan O'Brien's first domestic runner of the year, was sharply into stride from the outside stall and raced in a close-up second through halfway. Nudged along to gain control soon after turning for home, the 3-10 chalk was not for catching thereafter and kept on strongly under urging inside the final furlong to prevail by two lengths from News At Ten (GB) (Twilight Son {GB}).

Cairo is the third of five foals and one of two winners from as many runners produced by Listed Naas Fillies' Sprint S. victrix Cuff (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself kin to six black-type performers headed by MG1SP sire Gustav Klimt (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G1 Gran Criterium heroine Nayarra (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and G1 St James's Palace S. third Mars (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The April-foaled bay's second dam, MGSP Listed Empress S. victrix Massarra (GB) (Danehill), is daughter of G1 Prix de Diane heroine Rafha (GB) (Kris {GB}) and thus a half-sister to G1 Haydock Sprint Cup-winning sire Invincible Spirit (Ire) (Green Desert) and to the dam of three-time Group 1 winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}). He is half to a 2-year-old filly by No Nay Never and a yearling colt Wootton Bassett (GB).

City Of Light’s ‘Mimi’ Crowned Queen In The UAE Oaks

  A winner of the Listed UAE 1000 Guineas when last seen, MIMI KAKUSHI (City Of Light-Rite Moment, by Vicar) turned in a game effort to wear down California shipper Ami Please (Goldencents) and win the G3 UAE Oaks by 1 1/4 lengths at Meydan on Friday. She is the eighth filly to complete the Guineas/Oaks double, and first since subsequent American graded winner Shahama (Munnings) in 2022, who was also trained by Salem bin Ghadayer.

Racing for Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, the bay stalked from second as Ami Please crossed over to lead heading into the clubhouse turn. Rival Asawer (Nyquist), fourth in the UAE 1000 Guineas, exchanged some bumps with Mimi Kakushi on the backstretch as they chased the pacesetter. By the far turn, it was a line of three with Mimi Kakushi sandwiched between foes, but pilot Mickael Barzalona did not panic in the tight quarters, which began to ease as Asawer faded leaving the bend.

Mimi Kakushi locked horns with Ami Please at the quarter-pole, and the pair battled hammer and tongs until midstretch. At the 150-metre mark, Mimi Kakushi inched ahead of Ami Please, and eventually crossed the wire about a length to the good of that filly. Asawer hung on for third, a distant four lengths back.

Fourth in her first two local tries in November and December, the Woodford Thoroughbreds-bred graduated by two lengths over Asawer in the UAE 1000 Guineas Trial on Dec. 23. She increased her winning margin to 4 1/2 lengths in the Listed UAE 1000 Guineas on Jan. 20.

Pedigree Notes

The first graded/group winner for her Breeders' Cup-winning sire who stands at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky, Mimi Kakushi is one of four stakes winners overall. City Of Light's eldest foals just turned three. Wild Again stallion Vicar, a winner of the GI Fountain Of Youth S. and GI Florida Derby in 1999, has sired 15 stakes winners as a broodmare sire, with Mimi Kakushi joining Vicar's In Trouble (Into Mischief) and Sandbar (War Pass) as graded/group winners.

A $180,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Select yearling turned $250,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic juvenile (breeze video), Mimi Kakushi is a half-sister to three-time stakes winner Moment Is Right (Medaglia d'Oro), and the stakes-winning Laudation (Congrats). Her dam, who won both the Bed o' Roses H. and Distaff H. at Aqueduct at Grade II level, has a yearling filly by Cajun Breeze. Her 2023 offspring, by Khozan, was born dead. Sales history: $180,000 Ylg '21 FTKJUL; $250,000 2yo '22 FTIMAY. Lifetime Record: 5-3-0-0.
