War Like Goddess Defends Turf In Glens Falls

The influence of Champion grass horse and MGISW English Channel both on the racetrack and in the breeding shed cannot be overstated. After stints at Hurricane Hall, Lane's End and finally, Calumet, we sadly lost him late in 2021, but he still has an active group that continues to carry home his legacy.

Who is his most successful offspring? Maybe it's Chicago's own, MGISW The Pizza Man? Or how about MGISW Channel Maker, who just added another graded trophy to his collection last weekend at the ripe old age of nine? Or what of back-to-back Grade I winner Heart to Heart and lest we forget, the GI Travers S. hero V.E. Day?

While this worthy debate rages around your nearest watering hole, don't forget to consider the resume of English Channel's MGISW and MGSW War Like Goddess.

George Krikorian's 6-year-old mare is entered as the 3-5 morning-line favorite in Thursday's GII Glens Falls S. over the turf at Saratoga Race Course. The two-time defending champion returns upstate after running sixth in the GI New York S. June 9 at Belmont Park.

The Bill Mott trainee is making what is becoming a regular appearance upstate at the celebrated track. She is 4-3-1-0, with her only miss coming in last year's GII Flower Bowl S., when she was beaten a neck by the Peter Brant-owned and Chad Brown trained, Virginia Joy (Ger) (Solider Hollow {GB}), who returns here at 8-1 on David Aragona's line.

While Virginia Joy finished one position ahead of War Like Goddess in the New York S., her 4-year-old stablemate GISW McKulick (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was third. Owned by Klaravich Stables, the bay filly was facing older females for only the second time in that spot and she will be 7-2 on the morning-line in the Glens Falls as she stretches out to 12 furlongs for the first time.

Unified Headed For Stud Duty In Louisiana

MGSW Unified (Candy Ride {Arg}) will relocate to Lacer at Aztec Equine in Sunset, Louisiana after being acquired from Lane's End Farm, David Tillson and his partners said in a release Saturday.

Unified has settled in well, he is in wonderful shape and is acclimating to his new home,” Tillson said.

The stallion, who celebrated his fourth stakes winner on Friday at Saratoga when Unified Alliance won the Coronation Cup S., will join leading general sire in Louisiana, MGISW Carpe Diem (Giant's Causeway) and first-crop yearling sire GISP Bobby's Wicked One (Speightstown) for the 2024 breeding season.

“The predominant goal of this stallion station is to offer speed-oriented sons of prominent sires who are of the conformational type that compliment mares of the Southwestern region,” said Tillson.

Unified will be owned by Unified Stud, LLC and shares will be available for purchase. He will stand for $3,500 live foal.

PDJF Telethon Raises Over $300,000

The fifth annual PDJF Telethon, presented by Lane's End Farm, raised over $300,000 for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund Apr. 23. Since the inaugural telethon in 2018, over $1.5 million has been raised to support jockeys who have suffered serious on-track injuries.

“When everyone in the sport comes together, good things can happen,” said Kevin Grigsby, FanDuel TV executive producer. “We are grateful to our industry partners at Keeneland, Santa Anita and NYRA for their collaborative efforts to make this event a success. We are proud of all that we have raised so far but know the work is not done–we are already looking ahead to next year's telethon.”

“Being a part of this event is a great honor,” said Mike Joyce, a board member of the PDJF and on-air host at FanDuel TV. “I want to personally thank every single person who took time to donate to this worthwhile cause. No matter how large or small a donation, each one is so important.”

There were donations from supporters across the country including major donations from Jim McIngvale, Lee Einsidler, Vince Foglia and Lane's End Farm. In addition, FanDuel matched all donations up to $100,000.

“We are grateful to everyone who has been supportive of the annual telethon that has made it a success for the PDJF,” said Nancy LaSala, PDJF Board President. “It also allows the jockeys from the past and present to connect with the racing fans in a very personal way. This would not be possible without the platform provided by FanDuel TV who from the beginning supported this concept.”

Gaslight Dancer Burns Bright In Palisades S.

Taking to the Haggin Turf Course once again, 6-1 shot Gaslight Dancer recorded his first stakes victory of his career with a solid performance in the Palisades S. on Sunday afternoon.

Winning on the grass at Kentucky Downs Sept. 3 in his second career start, Gaslight Dancer was the favorite Oct. 9 in the GIII Futurity S. during the BAQ meet, only to lose by a neck to Nagirroc (Lea). With a tough test Nov. 4 in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, he drew the fourteenth hole, but still turned in a respectable sixth.

Back at Keeneland in this spot, the $260,000 OBSAPR buy patiently waited his turn along the rail as Bushido (First Samurai) blazed a trail. Into the stretch, a trio of suitors vied for the lead, while the Mike Maker trainee cut to the outside. The bay colt flashed a nice turn of foot and passed his tiring rivals to win by 1 1/2 length over late-running 51-1 longshot Two of a Kind (Overanalyze).

“Looks pretty good,” trainer Mike Maker said about his horse's improvement over this past year. “I know last year he was pretty headstrong. [Today] he looked like he settled nice, saved ground and kicked home. Last year, he was all out wanting to go for the lead. I still think he'll stretch out to a mile.”

The first of his dam's progeny, the winner also has a 2-year-old half-brother named Moon Raid (Munnings). His dam is a half-sister to GSW Summer Raven (Summer Squall), who is responsible for MGSW Lewis Bay (Bernadini) and GIII Holy Bull S. victor Winslow Homer (Unbridled Song). The 8-year-old bay mare RNA'd last November for $250,000 at Keeneland while in foal to McKinzie.
