Blue Point Filly Set For America After Selling For 500,000 Euros

The first juvenile to reach the €500,000 mark at Arqana's Breeze-up Sale was a daughter of Darley's first-season sire Blue Point (Ire), who will be trained in America after being bought by Nicolas Bertran de Balanda of NBB Racing on behalf of Roy and Gretchen Jackson's Lael Stable.

Out of the listed-winning Afleet Alex mare Shimmering Moment, lot 44 was consigned by Brendan Holland's Grove Stud. She was bought as a foal at Tattersalls for 135,000gns by DPA Bloodstock. Bertran de Balanda confirmed that the filly, who was bred by Mark Gittins of Castlefarm Stud, will be trained by Arnaud Delacour.

Blue Point has made a fast start with his first crop of two-year-old runners and is the sire of six winners to date from 18 runners.

Purplepay Another Winner For Zarak on Banner Day For Sire

Lael Stable's Purplepay (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) garnered a bumper pot when running away with the Haras de Bouquetot Criterium Arqana on ParisLongchamp's Arc Saturday card and closed last term under the stewardship of Cedric Rossi with a third in Saint-Cloud's Oct. 23 G1 Criterium International. Making her debut for new connections in last month's G1 Irish 1000 Guineas at The Curragh, having been knocked down for €2-million at last year's Arqana December sale, she finished sixth there and rebounded in style to salute in Sunday's G2 Prix de Sandringham going one mile at Chantilly. The eventual winner was swiftly into stride and found a smooth rhythm in second as Hot Queen (Fr) (Recorder {GB}) established a clear lead through halfway. Taking closer order in the straight, the crowd's 6-5 selection gained a narrow advantage on the bridle with 300 metres remaining and surged clear under a late drive to earn a career high with plenty to spare. At the line, she was 2 1/2 lengths too good for Life In Motion (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) with Sicilian Defense (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) a neck adrift in third.

“She did really well today and she's a lovely filly with a great temperament,” said Maureen Haggas. “She's got a good mind and she wants to please in everything she does. She obviously has a lot of ability and Tom [Marquand] gave her a really lovely ride. She made a nice comeback run [in the Irish 1000 Guineas] last time, she's come forward for that and we're really pleased. We're very lucky to have her and we're lucky the Jacksons bought her. She was destined for America, but there were some problems with her tests and she missed the plane, so we were the lucky recipients and we're very grateful to have her. Future plans are William's department and he'll deal with that.”

Purplepay, half-sister to the once-raced 2-year-old colt Two Fifty Two (Fr) (Cloth of Stars {Ire}), is the fourth of five foals and one of two scorers produced by a daughter of G3 Prix de Flore victrix Albisola (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), herself kin to G3 Prix Quincey-winning sire Johnny Barnes (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) and G3 Prix des Reservoirs placegetter Bufera (Ire) (King's Best). The latter is the dam of Listed Prix La Sorellina winner Chartreuse (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}). Descendants of the February-foaled bay's third dam, Listed Prix Imprudence winner Mahalia (Ire) (Danehill), are headed by MG1SW sire Ectot (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}) and G1 St James's Palace S. victor Most Improved (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}).

One Master Foals Dubawi Colt

Roy and Gretchen Jackson's triple G1 Prix de la Foret winner One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) has produced her first foal, a Dubawi (Ire) colt born on Jan. 27, and will be bred back to Frankel (GB), Gretchen Jackson told the TDN.

One Master is one of around five mares that the Jacksons-the Pennsylvania-based breeders of Classic winners on both sides of the Atlantic in George Washington (Ire) and Barbaro-keep at New England Stud in Newmarket. She is a second generation homebred for the Jacksons' Lael Stables; they bought her dam, the talented sprinter Superstar Leo (Ire) (College Chapel {GB}), in training, and bred from her the G3 King George S. and G3 Molecomb S. winner Enticing (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who has produced six winners. Enticing, who has a 2-year-old full-brother to One Master, sadly died last month. Superstar Leo is retired on the Jacksons' farm in Pennsylvania.

Trained by William Haggas, One Master raced until the age of six. In addition to her three Forets, she won the G3 Fairy Bridge S. at Tipperary and the G3 Oak Tree S. at Glorious Goodwood.

Rougir Now in U.S. and Brant Confident Purchase Will Work Out

Just three days after he and partner Michael Tabor spent €3 million on Group I winning filly Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) at the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale, owner Peter Brant got a most unwelcome surprise. Rougir's trainer, Cedric Rossi, was arrested Dec. 7 as part of a probe into equine doping that also involved two other members of the Rossi family, Frederic and Charley.

That brought into question whether or not he and his partners had purchased a horse whose successes on the racetrack were, at least in part, the result of the use of performance-enhancing drugs. But Brant said Monday that he is confident that Rougir and another Rossi horse he purchased at Arqana, Speak of the Devil (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), were not involved in the doping campaign the Rossi family is alleged to have been part of.

“We were assured these horses were not involved in this thing,” Brant said. “We had all sorts of tests taken on these horses. Samples were sent to Germany. They checked out very well. We were led to believe that these horses were not part of the investigation, that they checked out very well.”

Rougir won the G3 Prix des Reservoirs in 2020 before launching a 2021 campaign that included a win in the Oct. 3 G1 Prix de l'Opera Longines. She was most recently seventh in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. The €3-million price tag was the most paid for any horse at any of the European breeding stock sales in 2021.

Speak of the Devil, who was trained by Frederic Rossi, is the winner of four listed stakes, including the final two starts of her career. Purchased solely by Brant, she went for €1,950,000.

American owners Lael Stable also bought a pricey Rossi horse at Arqana, purchasing the 2-year-old Purplepay (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), who was also trained by Cedric Rossi and who sold for €2 million.

Despite his belief that his purchases raced drug-free, Brant admitted that he was concerned after learning of the arrest of the Rossis.

“I obviously don't like the situation,” Brant said. “You don't want to buy a horse and then find out a few days later that there was a sting. That's not exactly what we were expecting.”

Brant said that he and the Coolmore team went back to Arqana officials after the news of the arrests broke to explore their options. He said a confidential agreement was reached in which Arqana made certain concessions to protect their investment.

“[Arqana] made certain guarantees to us so far as whatever credentials these horses had would remain and that if anybody took them away then that would change things,” he said. “Arqana was very responsible. They dealt with the sellers and they bridged us together and we made an agreement we all felt safe with. We were given assurances that our investment was safe.

“Did we ever say we wanted our money back? We said we wanted certain guarantees or else we would like the sales canceled. We also evaluated what our legal position was and we just decided that this was best way to go about it.”

The two Brant purchases have arrived in Florida and are stabled with Chad Brown. Brant said Rougir will likely go next in either the GIII Beaugay S. or the GII New York S. The GI Just a Game S. is a possible goal for Speak of the Devil, he said.

Charley Rossi's wife, the jockey Jessica Marcialis, was also arrested.

Cedric Rossi was also the trainer of GI QIPCO Champion S. winner Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}).
