OBS October Kicks off Tuesday

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's October Yearling Sale begins with a session of selected yearlings Tuesday and continues Wednesday with an open session. Bidding will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, with a total of 152 yearlings–including 17 supplemental offerings–catalogued, with an additional 395 head–including 32 supplements–catalogued for the second day, which starts at 11 a.m.

The two-day auction comes in the midst of a yearling sales season which has featured competitive bidding across the country.

“It certainly has been competitive all year long and we hope that competitive market continues here,” OBS Director of Sales Tod Wojciechowski said on a picture-perfect fall day in Ocala Monday. “We are seeing a lot of activity in the barns. Most of the people started showing Sunday and it was very active with a lot of consignors telling me that they are showing as many horses as they've ever shown. I am out in the barn area now and it looks like the barns are quite active. We've seen some newer players here and a lot more people with intention looking at horses.”

During last year's select session of the October sale–held amidst the uncertainty of the ongoing pandemic–86 horses sold for $3,397,000 for an average of $39,500 and a median of $28,000. A filly by Not This Time brought the top price of $225,000. In 2019, 130 select yearlings sold for $5,689,200 for an average of $43,763 and a median of $30,000.

Included among October sale graduates, Exline-Border Racing LLC, SAF Racing and Richard Hausman's Lady Mystify (Bernardini) took the Sept. 26 GIII Remington Park Oaks. The OBS graduate realized $120,000 for consignor Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck) at the 2019 renewal of the October Selected Yearling Sale before selling for $325,000 the following April.

LNJ Foxwoods' Outfoxed (Valiant Minister), who broke her maiden in Gulfstream's FTBOA Florida Sire Susan's Girl S. in August, returned to Hallandale Sept. 25 to post a 9-1/4 length victory in the FTBOA Florida Sire My Dear Girl S. The Bill Mott trainee, who sold for $27,000 out of the Abbie Road Farm consignment at the 2020 October Yearling Sale, later brought $360,000 at OBS in April. Another recent winner to exit the October sale, Monarch Stables Inc.'s Last Leaf (Not This Time) led an OBS sweep of Saturday's Hollywood Beach S. The two-time OBS graduate was sold by Sharon Biamonte at the 2020 Winter Mixed Sale and then purchased for $23,500 out of the Kaizen Sales consignment at the 2020 October Sale.

Rounding out the sale's recent graduates, Full of Run Racing, LLC and Madaket Stables LLC's Dreamalildreamofu (Commissioner), a $65,000 October purchase in 2018, won the $100,000 Twixt S. at Laurel Sept. 18.

OBS will again offer online bidding and buyers may register for bidding approval, then access the OBS Bidding Screen with their credentials. For complete information on registration and online bidding visit www.obssales.com.

The sale, which will be streamed live via the OBS website, will also be available on the TDN site.

Lady Mystify Gets First Graded Stakes Win In Remington Park Oaks

Lady Mystify made the trip from California to Oklahoma a winning one with a pace-stalking performance in the Grade 3 Remington Park Oaks at the Oklahoma City, Okla., track.

In her only previous try at graded stakes company, Lady Mystify, trained by Peter Eurton, was fifth in the Grade 3 Torrey Pines at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif. in late August. In the G3 Oaks, facing a field that included G3 Fantasy Stakes winner Pauline's Pearl and Cathryn Sophia Stakes winner Lovely Ride, Lady Mystify broke cleanly, jockey Flavien Prat putting her third behind front-runner My Girl Red early in the 1 1/16-mile stakes.

Around the far turn, Prat pulled his filly even with My Girl Red as Ricardo Santana, Jr. moved Pauline's Pearl on the outside of horses to start her bid in the stretch. At the top of the lane, Lady Mystify took over the lead as Pauline's Pearl tried to challenge on her outside. The Eurton trainee was too much for Pauline's Pearl, drawing away to win by three lengths. Amendment Nineteen was third and Bobbin Tail fourth.

The final time for the G3 Remington Park Oaks was 1:44.13. Find this race's chart here.

Lady Mystify paid $14.00, $5.00, and $2.80. Pauline's Pearl paid $2.80 and $2.10. Amendment Nineteen paid $2.10.

Bred in Kentucky by Scott Dilworth and Evan Dilworth, Lady Mystify is by Bernardini out of the Unbridled's Song mare J. Quirk. She is a 3-year-old filly owned by Exline-Border Racing LLC, SAF Racing, and Richard Hausman. Lady Mystify was purchased by Exline-Border Racing from consigner Niall Brennan Stables for $325,000 at the 2020 Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. With her win in the G3 Remington Park Oaks, Lady Mystify has three wins in five starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 6-3-1-1 and career earnings of $217,520.

Private Mission Seeks Black-Type Badge in Torrey Pines

Baoma Corp.'s Private Mission (Into Mischief) looks to secure her black-type badge Saturday in Del Mar's GIII Torrey Pines S. A debut winner at Santa Anita Oct. 18, the $750,000 FTSAUG buy checked in fourth as the favorite in this venue's Desi Arnaz S. Nov. 14. The bay returned to winning ways with a front-running score in a six-panel optional claimer in Arcadia June 12 and tries a mile for the first time here. The Bob Baffert pupil prepped for this with a best-of-82 five furlongs in :59 flat at Del Mar Aug. 14.

Phoenix Thoroughbred's Forest Caraway (Bodemeister) boasts two wins and a second at this oval. Opening her account here last August, the Empire-bred was second to Princess Noor (Not This Time) in the GI Del Mar Debutante S. next out in September and was fourth in Santa Anita's Anoakia S. Oct. 18. The half-sister to GSW Holiday Disguise (Harlan's Holiday) and MSW Midnight Disguise (Midnight Lute) registered a decisive optional claimer victory at this oval Aug. 1.

Peter Eurton sends out an intriguing candidate making her black-type bow in Lady Mystify (Bernardini). Hitting the board in her first two attempts in sprints, the bay ran away to an 18-length graduation when extended to a mile at Santa Anita Feb. 5. She wired a track-and-trip optional claimer last out July 29.
