Our Secret Agent Graduates To Graded Stakes Winner In Hendrie At Woodbine

Our Secret Agent had been a graded-stakes bridesmaid twice, finishing second in Grade 3 Whimsical and the Grade 3 Seaway, but in the Hendrie Stakes, she graduated to winner, taking the Grade 3 stakes by 3 1/2 lengths at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

Breaking from post two, the 4-year-old filly settled into second early in the 6 1/2 furlong stakes, jockey Kazushi Kimura positioning her a length behind early leader Toffen. Around the final turn, Kimura sent Our Secret Agent up to challenge Toffen, taking over the lead as the field of six straightened into the stretch.

In the stretch, Amalfi Coast made her run at Our Secret Agent, but to no avail. The daughter of Secret Circle had more than enough to put distance between her and Amalfi Coast as they approached the wire. The final time for the 6 1/2 furlongs was 1:15.68.

Our Secret Agent paid $4.50, $2.30, and $2.10. Amalfi Coast paid $2.70 and $2.40. La Libertee paid $4.00.

Lady War Machine Takes Alywow Stakes At Woodbine

Lady War Machine, a chestnut daughter of Street Boss, trained by Josie Carroll, called the shots in taking the $100,000 Alywow Stakes Saturday afternoon at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

Breaking sharply with Patrick Husbands aboard in the event for 3-year-old fillies, the Kentucky-bred was settled comfortably into the second spot as outsider Hard Street led the field of six through an opening quarter-mile in :23.22.

A patient Husbands continued to keep Lady War Machine close to the pacesetter through a half-mile timed in :46.08. As the field turned for home, the duo swept to the lead along the inside and then dashed away from their rivals down the lane.

At the wire, Lady War Machine, contesting her first added-money feature, was three lengths ahead of a closing Honey Pants, sent off as the slight choice, who was making her Woodbine debut for conditioner Christophe Clement. La Libertee was third, while Dirty Dangle finished fourth.

Final time for 6 ½-furlongs over a firm E.P. Taylor Turf Course was 1:15.40.

“On the turf, everything plays out differently,” said Husbands. “I don't want to be on the lead and I don't want to get trapped down on the inside. She had her ears pricked and she wasn't scared down on the inside, so I was just playing it by ear.”

Husbands on-the-fly approach paid off with an impressive performance.

“The straight here is so long you've always got closers. It doesn't matter how you look at it… you've always got closers. With the turf, I try not to pick it up too early and go too early and get caught. I was just biding my time.”

Owned by Mark Dodson, Lady War Machine arrived at the Alywow off a sparkling 7 ½-length maiden-breaking score on July 3 at Woodbine, in a six-furlong main track maiden special weight event.

She finished third in her debut last November, a 6 ½-furlong Tapeta test at the Toronto oval.

Bred by SF Bloodstock, LLC, and Matthew Sandblom, Lady War Machine paid $6.10 for the win.

Constitution Half to Fly So Pretty Scores on Debut at Ellis

4th-Ellis, $46,172, Msw, 8-21, 2yo, f, 5 1/2fT, 1:05.73, fm.
LA LIBERTEE (f, 2, Constitution–La Rambla {SP}, by City Zip), a half-sister to Tracy Farmer’s homebred Fly So Pretty (Sky Mesa), SW, $125,919, who scored in Aqueduct’s Stewart Manor S. last November at two, made her debut a winning one at Ellis for the same connections. The chestnut found a fluid stride immediately out of the gate and settled into a comfortable third on the rail with the top flight while the rest of the field dawdled several lengths back. Behind fractions of :22.49 for the quarter and :47.12 for the half, La Libertee split horses at the top of the stretch and blew on by the favored front-runner Saturday Night (Tapit). With her ears pricked, she galloped home a 3 3/4-length victress to pay $12.80 as the third choice. Fly So Pretty and La Libertee are La Rambla’s first two foals. The mare produced a filly by Tiznow in 2019, was barren for 2020, and has been bred back to Sky Mesa for 2021. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $27,720. Click for the Equibase.com chart.
