Highland Avenue Leads Appleby’s Royal Ascot Brigade

Listed winner Highland Avenue (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is in good order ahead of an intended start in the G1 St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot on June 15. The Godolphin flagbearer broke his maiden at second asking at Kempton in January, and followed up with another win going a mile there on Mar. 3. He captured the Listed Feilden S. at Newmarket on Apr. 3 and was only a half-length second in the Listed Heron S. at Sandown on May 20.

“Highland Avenue will go for the St James's Palace S.,” trainer Charlie Appleby told Sky Sports Racing. “I believe when you go to Ascot you have to be battle-hardened, and he's put that onto his CV now. Sandown was very much a stepping-stone to the St James's Palace, as long as he ran well. I'm very much looking forward to seeing him on a quicker surface at Ascot.”

Another Godolphin/Appleby runner for the St James's Palace S. is La Barrosa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), the winner of the G3 Tattersalls S. as a juvenile. Second to stablemate and G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas runner-up Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G3 Craven S. at Newmarket on Apr. 15, the colt was sixth in the G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas on May 22.

“We'll add to La Barrosa to the St James's Palace picture. We were pleased with his run on his last start,” he said. “He's come out of the race well, and deserves to be in the line-up.”

Both SW and MGSP Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and SW Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) are bound for the seven-furlong G3 Jersey S.

“Naval Crown is going to drop to seven for the Jersey,” he said.

“He lost nothing in defeat on his first run back in the Free H., and ran a gallant race in the Guineas. The pace angle is very much his forte. We might step Creative Force up from six to seven to run him in the Jersey as well. On what he has achieved he deserves to be at Ascot. On his pedigree, there is no reason why he shouldn't step up to seven.”

The aforementioned Master of the Seas has returned to work after being derailed by a minor setback that prevented him from starting at Royal Ascot. The G1 Prix du Moulin is now on his calendar in September.

“Master Of The Seas resumed back into work last week,” said Appleby. “He'll build up day by day, week by week, now. We were pointing him towards Goodwood for the [G1] Sussex, but I felt the track would not quite suit him there. The Prix du Moulin is a more realistic target. Long-term the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar will be tailor made for him.”

Hambleton Racing Duo Primed For Royal Ascot

The G3 Jersey S. at Royal Ascot is the likely next race for Listed Surrey S. hero Mehmento (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), although he also holds an entry in the G1 Commonwealth Cup S. Earlier in the season, the Hambleton Racing XLVI & Partner runner had been a close second in the G3 Greenham S. at Newbury in April, but ran unplaced in the G1 French 2000 Guineas on May 16 prior to his Epsom score.

Cosmo Charlton, head racing manager for owners Hambleton Racing, said, “We're looking towards Royal Ascot with him now– probably most likely for the Jersey, but also considering the Commonwealth Cup. I think Archie is probably leaning towards the Jersey at the moment, but we're keeping an open mind.”

Another Hambleton-owned horse is G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint winner Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who is being readied for the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. The gelding ran fourth in his seasonal reappearance in the G2 Greenlands S. on May 22.

“Mehmento and Glen Shiel will be going to Ascot for us–Glen Shiel will be going for the Diamond Jubilee,” Charlton added. “Glen Shiel is in very good form, and we'll see how he goes on quicker ground–because it looks like that's what we're going to get, looking at the weather forecast.”

Poetic Flare Heads Irish Guineas Cast

Denied a Classic double in Sunday's G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Jim Bolger's Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) will try again in Saturday's G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh, for which a dozen were confirmed on Thursday. His owner, breeder and trainer gave the expected all-clear to the May 1 G1 2000 Guineas hero after his sixth placing at ParisLongchamp, while he also saddles the G1 Futurity Trophy winner Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), who was only fourth on his return in the G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown May 9. Reflecting on Poetic Flare's reversal, Bolger said, “The wheels kind of came off the wagon a little bit there, but we've drawn a line through it and we're moving on. It was the conditions mainly. While I agree the going was very soft, he couldn't get a grip for whatever reason and I suspect there was a little bit of padding underneath. He wasn't going to be able to quicken up like he can in those circumstances and Kevin didn't get him to where he wanted to be at the two-furlong marker.”

Bolger believes that Poetic Flare is up to the fast turnaround. “He's very well, he only had a furlong and a half of a race, so we expected he'd be fresh after it,” he commented. “He's very durable and has a great constitution. He'd be able to stand up to whatever I throw at him.” Of Mac Swiney, he added, “Mac Swiney was flat in the Derrinstown and didn't perform at all well, but the following morning he had a very copious nasal discharge. That cleared up over the following weekend, he's back in work and is doing very well. I need to get the run into him for Epsom and for him to prove his wellbeing. If he does that, I'll be very happy with him. If he can beat Poetic Flare he can win, but I think at a mile Poetic Flare is the better horse. I'd be very comfortable going to Epsom with him, provided we get a good show at the Curragh.”

Likely favourite at present is Zhang Yuesheng's 2000 Guineas third Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), while Ryan Moore is on Wembley (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who proved such a disappointment when 11th behind him at Newmarket. Godolphin rely on TDN Rising Star La Barrosa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who was runner-up to Master of the Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in Newmarket's G3 Craven S. over this mile trip last time Apr. 15. Another TDN Rising Star, Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), will be missing from the Curragh after Joseph O'Brien withdrew Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez's G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. hero.

Friday's action sees the last two recognised Epsom Oaks and Derby trials takes place in the Listed Height of Fashion S. and Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Cocked Hat S., formerly known as the Lupe and the Predominate. The Lupe or Height of Fashion was won in 2000 by Love Divine (GB) (Diesis {GB}) and in 2010 by Snow Fairy (Ire) (Intikhab) who went on to Oaks glory days later, but none of the eight entered this time even hold an entry in the June 4 Classic. The Cocked Hat is a different kettle of fish, with live Derby outsiders Stay Well (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) and Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) making up an intriguing contest. The former, who is owned by his breeders Ben and Sir Martyn Arbib, scored by eight lengths over 10 furlongs at Windsor Apr. 26 and trainer Hughie Morrison is looking forward to seeing him tackle the extra furlong here. “He was named Stay Well in recognition of the sayings this time last year 'Stay Alert, Stay At Home', not that he would stay well but his mother did stay very well,” he explained. “Martyn and Ben breed to win the Derby, so if you've got half a chance of running in the Derby that's what you do. It's close enough to it but my feeling is, if we were going to the Derby, we'd have to give him a very good gallop some time in the next 10 days. This is his racecourse gallop.”

Noel Meade said of Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm's G3 Zetland S. winner Lone Eagle, who was fourth in the G3 Sandown Classic Trial Apr. 23 and who carries a five-pound penalty, “He was a little bit disappointing at Sandown. He just didn't seem to spark, but then again it was his first time back and he is a lazy-ish horse. He does need motivating and he was a bit ring-rusty, so maybe we will see him in a better light. I needed to give him another run. It's not ideal having to carry a penalty. That's not good but at the same time if he's good enough, he should manage with it. I just wanted to get him out and get him running. Hopefully the track will suit him. We'll just see where to go from there.”

Lope de Vega’s La Barrosa Takes the Tattersalls

The subject of a gamble into 4-7 favouritism for Thursday’s G3 Tattersalls S. at Newmarket, Godolphin’s TDN Rising Star La Barrosa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) duly delivered with a workmanlike success to back up his debut win over this seven-furlong trip at Ascot Sept. 4. Racing behind the leaders Dark Lion (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Qaader (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) throughout, the bay had to squeeze between them coming out of the “dip” but had the gears to get to the front with half a furlong remaining en route to a length defeat of the former. “I was quite pleased to see where he was, even if William wasn’t as comfortable as me, as I knew it would help him get into a nice rhythm,” Charlie Appleby said. “James Doyle rode him at Ascot and said to make sure we park him up in behind so he doesn’t over-race. He showed bit class there and quickened up, but he’s still learning and was quite raw. I won’t be bold and say we’ll definitely throw him into a [G1] Dewhurst or something like that, but he’s a nice horse going forward and if we take the right steps with him he’ll be a nice 3-year-old.”

There is a chance that La Barrosa could be supplemented for the Oct. 10 Dewhurst according to Appleby, who added, “Coming into today, we felt we would see what kind of performance he put up whether we contemplate supplementing for a Dewhurst and from what we have seen today, it is up for discussion. I feel he has learnt again today and he is entitled to come forward a bit more. He travels very well and I wouldn’t want him to be doing it the wrong way round yet. I think seven is his trip for the moment, though I’m not saying he won’t get a mile in time. While he is learning, I think this is his right trip for the moment. This horse is a work horse, whereas [the G2 Superlative S. winner] Master of the Seas is not a work horse. Master of the Seas just goes about his work and he would go past you in the string and you wouldn’t take much notice, whereas this horse has got a bit of presence about him and spring in his step.”

A 750,000gns Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 graduate, La Barrosa is a son of the G3 Prix de Psyche and G3 C.L. Weld Park S. runner-up and G3 Sandown Classic Trial third Bikini Babe (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). She is a daughter of the multiple stakes winner Zeiting (Ire) (Zieten) before producing a total of six black-type performers including the group scorers Combat Zone (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), Scottish (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Royal Empire (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). Zeiting’s G3 Prix Miesque-placed Zut Alors (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) was in turn responsible for four black-type performers headed by the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and GIII Honey Fox S. winner Precieuse (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and the listed-placed sprinter Baccarat (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}). Among Zeiting’s half-siblings is the G3 Prix du Bois scorer Dolled Up (Ire) (Whipper) and Madany (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) who is the dam of the G2 Hungerford S. winner and G1 2000 Guineas S. runner-up Massaat (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and the G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Eqtidaar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Next up from Bikini Babe is a yearling filly by Tamayuz (GB) named Once (Ire).

Lope de Vega’s La Barrosa a New Rising Star

Ascot’s seven-furlong Me2 Club EBF Future Stayers’ Maiden S. on Friday looked one for future Classic prospects on paper and it was the 2-1 favourite La Barrosa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) who came out on top to earn TDN Rising Star status. Having cost 750,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, Godolphin’s son of the multiple group-placed Bikini Babe (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) carried a sense of expectation despite the presence of Derab (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), the half-brother to Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}). Settled in mid-pack early by James Doyle as the pace proved only tepid, the bay was launched between rivals passing the two-furlong pole and was soon in front with first run on Juddmonte’s keenly-anticipated fellow newcomer. Surging to the line with that rival in tow, he had 1 1/4 lengths to spare there as they pulled 2 3/4 lengths clear of the strongly-supported King Power-Roger Varian runner Greatgadian (Ger) (Siyouni {Fr}) in third.

Doyle was impressed. “I had sat on him at home and he had worked nicely and pleased us, so we expected him to run well and his price reflected that,” he said. “He didn’t jump that quick and so I immediately found cover, which was the key to him as he was a bit bull-headed with me going down. Cover helped him relax and once I got a bit of a gap he quickened up really well. He can only keep stepping forward, as he can be a little bit wooden–he’s that way at home and can take me on nice so it was nice that he learned how to do it the right way round. When the gap came, he was in front a furlong and a half out which is a long way on a newcomer at Ascot. The second horse looked quite nice in the paddock and he’s shown a good turn of foot and won well. I’m sure a mile will not be a problem, as the dam operated in group races over a mile and a quarter and he’s got a good stride. He’s a big robust type and I’m sure we could see him a couple of times before the season is out. There might be options for him in France, where he could learn a bit more but Charlie will work it out, he does a great job of that.”

The aforementioned Bikini Babe was campaigned by Mark Johnston from seven to 12 1/2 furlongs, with her finest efforts being second placings in the 9 1/2-furlong Listed UAE Oaks on Tapeta and behind Zagora (Fr) (Green Tune) in the 10-furlong G3 Prix de Psyche. Also runner-up in the G3 C.L. Weld Park S. and third in the G3 Sandown Classic Trial, she is a daughter of Zeiting (Ire) (Zieten) who was successful in stakes races in France and the States. Bikini Babe is one of six black-type performers she produced, with the trio of Combat Zone (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), Scottish (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Royal Empire (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) winning at group level.

Another of Zeiting’s daughters, the G3 Prix Miesque third Zut Alors (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), went on to throw four black-type runners of her own headed by the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and GIII Honey Fox S. winner Precieuse (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and the smart listed-placed and Wokingham H.-winning sprinter Baccarat (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}) who raced for this stable. Zeiting is a half to the speedy and precocious G3 Prix du Bois scorer Dolled Up (Ire) (Whipper) and to Madany (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who has made her name as the dam of the G2 Hungerford S. winner and G1 2000 Guineas S. runner-up Massaat (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), the G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Eqtidaar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and last week’s impressive Newmarket winner Mujbar (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}). The dam’s yearling is a filly by Tamayuz (GB) named Once (Ire).
