Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: Oct. 25, 2020

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for Sunday running at Tokyo and Kyoto Racecourse, the latter of which plays host to the G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger), where the uber-talented Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) looks to follow in his sire’s footsteps in completing the Triple Crown:

MOZU HAPPY ROAD (c, 2, Medaglia d’Oro–Overheard, by Macho Uno) is the latest produce from his dam, who won the GIII Valley View S. sponsored by this breeder in 2013 and the GII Dance Smartly S. the following season. A $425K Keeneland September graduate, the April foal hails from family of Pin Oak’s Grade I-winning juvenile filly Confessional, who–like this colt’s dam sire–was by Holy Bull. 5th-TOK, ¥13,830,000 ($132k), Allowance, 2yo, 1400mT
REFRAME (f, 2, American Pharoah–Careless Jewel, by Tapit) turned in one of the more memorable debuts in recent memory, holding on by a desperate half-length after drifting out dramatically to the outside fence at Niigata July 25 (see below, gate 15). The $410K KEESEP yearling, a daughter of the single-minded GI Alabama S. romper Careless Jewel, has undergone rigorous retraining since and Takuya Kowata, who miraculously stayed in the saddle on debut, keeps the ride this weekend. 5th-KYO, ¥13,400,000 ($128k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800mT
MOZU TREASURE (f, 2, California Chrome–Somethinaboutbetty, by Forestry), whose Maryland-bred dam was a four-time stakes winner and second in the GIII Lake George S., cost $200K as a KEESEP yearling and is a half-sister to GSP Dewey Square (Bernardini) from the same A.P. Indy sire line, as well as SP Something Super (Super Saver). This is also the female family of MGSW Eskenformoney (Eskendereya) and GISW My Trusty Cat (Tale of the Cat). B-Siena Farms LLC (KY)

Notable US-Bred & -Sired Runners in Japan: Oct. 17 & 18, 2020

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Niigata and Kyoto Racecourses, the latter of which plays host to Sunday’s G1 Shuka Sho, the final leg of the Japanese Triple Tiara. Daring Tact (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) will go favored to become the sixth to complete the sweep, joining the likes of Gentildonna (Jpn) and Almond Eye (Jpn), but would be the first to do so undefeated. Daughters of US Grade I winners Ria Antonia and Hilda’s Passion will try to play the role of spoiler:

LUCKY MO (JPN) (c, 2, Uncle Mo–Lucky to Be Me, by Bernstein) is a half-brother to 2016 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Champagne Room (Broken Vow) and was purchased in utero for $1.25m at the Keeneland November sale in 2017. Bred on the same cross over Storm Cat as champion and GI Kentucky Derby hero Nyquist, Lucky Mo is also a half-brother to a colt by Yoshida (Jpn)’s sire Heart’s Cry (Jpn) that fetched ¥190m ($1,775,701), the joint sixth-highest price at this year’s JRHA Select Yearling Sale. 5th-NII, ¥13,400,000 ($127k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1400mT
MOON BEAD (JPN) (f, 2, American Pharoah–Evening Jewel, by Northern Afleet) is the first Japanese-foaled produce for her dam, winner of the GI Ashland S. on the Polytrack and the GI Del Mar Oaks on turf and the unluckiest of losers in the GI Kentucky Oaks in 2010. The dam of the SP Bernardiva (Bernardini), Evening Jewel was sold for $950K in foal to Pioneerof the Nile at KEENOV in 2016 and was covered by this sire in Kentucky prior to her export. PRIMO D’ARC (f, 3, Bernardini–Wilshewed, by Carson City) enters this test with a tidy record of 2-2-0 from five starts, including a front-running, 2 1/2-length victory going this distance in the mud at Hanshin June 14 (see below, gate 1). A half-sister to GISW Stormello (Stormy Atlantic) and GSW My Best Brother (Stormy Atlantic); a full-sister to SW & GISP ‘TDN Rising Star’ Cherry Lodge and GSW Gala Award; and a half to the dam of 2019 Sovereign Award winner Curlin’s Voyage (Curlin), Primo d’Arc was a $400K KEESEP yearling and $500K OBS April breezer. Her 2-year-old half-sister Jacquelyn d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro), who RNAd for $450K at KEESEP and for $245K at OBS in June, breezed a half-mile in :49 (9/25) at Keeneland Oct. 14. SATONO APOLLON (JPN) (c, 2, Into Mischief–Final Decision, by Super Saver) debuted as a 5-1 chance over this track and distance July 25 and gave an excellent account of himself, finishing two lengths’ second behind a winner that has since doubled up (see below, gate 3). The April foal is out of a half-sister to champion Informed Decision (Monarchos), who was purchased with this foal in utero for $425K at Fasig-Tipton November in 2017. Satono Apollon, an ¥80-million ($737,600) acquisition at last year’s JRHA Select Sale, has a yearling half-sister by Heart’s Cry (Jpn) and a weanling half-sister by Lord Kanaloa (Jpn). BEST MAGIC (c, 4, Speightstown–Glinda the Good, by Hard Spun), a half-brother to champion and current Hill ‘n’ Dale stallion Good Magic (Curlin), posted three straight wide-margin successes at Nagoya on the National Association of Racing circuit over the winter, including a five-length success going 1600 meters in late March. A $200K Keeneland September yearling turned $700K OBS April breezer, the dark bay is kin to Good Magic’s yearling full-brother, who fetched $800K at KEESEP last month. The MSW/GSP Glinda the Good is a half-sister to GSW & GISP Take the Ribbon (Chester House); SW Flash Forward (Curlin); SW & GSP Flash Mash (Smarty Jones); and SW Bright Magic (Prized). HARRY BAROWS (c, 3, Uncle Mo–Isobel Baillie {GB}, by Lomitas {GB}) has two wins and a third from three tries on the dirt, having most recently cleared his first allowance condition by an easy 3 1/2 lengths at Chukyo Sept. 12. A half-brother to turf MGSW Isabella Sings (Eskendereya), MSW & GSP Alaura Michelle (Arch) and SW Tobacco Road (Quality Road), Harry Barows was bought back on a bid of $275K at KEESEP in 2018, then realized $425K at OBSAPR last spring. TAPITAIL (f, 2, Tapit–Lady of Fifty, by After Market) is the most recent produce for her dam, winner of the GI Clement L. Hirsch S. on synthetic and a stakes winner and Grade II placed on conventional dirt. A $975K buyback in foal to this sire at Fasig-Tipton November in 2014, Lady of Fifty was acquired by Teruya Yoshida in 2017 and produced this filly in Kentucky before being sent overseas. The mare was not represented by a foal in 2019 and her weanling colt by Heart’s Cry (Jpn) was purchased for ¥36m ($335,538) at this year’s JRHA Select Sale. B-Teruya Yoshida (KY)

The impeccably bred bay, a full-brother to SW & MG1SP Fleet Review, is out of a winning full-sister to champion and treble Group 1 winner Rip Van Winkle (Ire) and a half to Italian Group 3 winner Le Vie Infinite (Ire) (Le Vie Dei Colori {GB}). LECCE BAROQUE (f, 3, Uncle Mo–My Fast One, by Elusive Quality) looks to give pinhooker Carlo Vaccarezza and Top Line Sales a second Japanese winner in as many weekends, following on the success of Sui (Candy Ride {Arg}) Oct. 3. A $410K Keeneland September yearling turned $525K OBS March breezer, the dark bay could not have been more impressive in graduating by 10 lengths at first asking over this track and distance Feb. 8 and added an equally sparkling nine-length allowance Apr. 25 (see below, gate 10). She was burned up on the pace when the 2-1 second favorite to Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) in the June 21 G3 Unicorn S. (1600m) and makes a much-anticipate return here.
