All Breeders’ Cup Tests Come Back Clean

All samples collected from 2021 Breeders' Cup horses have been cleared by the Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory at the University of California, Davis.

All horses competing in Breeders' Cup races this past weekend at Del Mar were tested for TCO2 levels in blood. Post-race testing was performed for prohibited drugs on the first four finishers in all Breeders' Cup races and any additional random horses selected by the stewards consistent with California Horse Racing Board protocol. Post-race testing was done on both blood and urine samples. The GI Breeders' Cup Classic was won by Knicks Go (Paynter).

The Maddy Laboratory's standard protocols look for a wide variety of compounds of concern for racing integrity, such as anabolic steroids, beta2 (b2)agonists, selective androgen receptor modulators, erythropoietin, and other similar doping agents. All post-race samples were tested for cobalt. Routine testing in California exceeds national graded stakes testing standards. The Maddy Laboratory is accredited by the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium and the only laboratory in the Western Hemisphere certified by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities.

The Maddy Laboratory cleared TCO2 samples on 148 horses that competed in 14 Breeders' Cup races along with 69 horses that competed in other races on the two Breeders' Cup cards. The large fields were popular with the public, as the total all-sources common-pool handle for the two-day World Championships was $182,908,409, a new record for the two-day event.

There were no equine fatalities in the races nor any observable injuries to the horses. Carl Woods, the assistant starter who was injured at the starting gate Nov. 5, has informed the CHRB that he is fine and back to work.

Jockeys rode under extremely restrictive rules governing the use of the riding crop. Three jockeys violated those rules and received fines totaling $11,000. All jockeys were advised by the stewards prior to the races that the crop rules would be strictly enforced and that fines would be elevated.

All Breeders' Cup horses competed without the administration of furosemide, or Lasix.

Leading Money Rider Joel Rosario Settles Into Churchill Jockey Colony For Fall Meet

Following his victory aboard Knicks Go in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (Grade 1), the nation's current leading rider in purse earnings, Joel Rosario, joined the regular Churchill Downs jockey colony Wednesday and plans to stay through the next 14 days of racing.

“We have to keep working hard no matter where we go,” Rosario said. “I'm excited to be here and looking forward to riding the rest of the meet here.”

Represented by Ron Anderson, Rosario has won 68 stakes races this year and is in pursuit of the late Garrett Gomez's 2007 all-time mark of 76. Rosario has won 48 graded stakes, and the all-time mark is held by Jerry Bailey, which was 55 in 2003. Amazingly, Anderson represented Bailey and Gomez during their historic campaigns.

Rosario presence was immediately felt when entries were taken Wednesday for Saturday's 11-race program. The 36-year-old was named to ride in every race.

On Saturday, Knicks Go gave Rosario his 209th victory of the year. He's since won one additional race at Belmont on Sunday.

One day prior to Knicks Go's Classic victory, Rosario rode 2-year-old filly Echo Zulu to a 5 ¼-length triumph in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Rosario entered Thursday's nine-race card with more than $30.8 million in purse earnings, about $3.5 million ahead of Irad Ortiz Jr.

Breeders’ Cup Pledge Raises Over $140,000 For New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program announced today that early estimate of funds raised during its Breeders' Cup Pledge will be more than $140,000. This year's total was driven by a record eight horses with pledging connections—Knicks Go, Aloha West, Life Is Good, Golden Pal, Ce Ce, Corniche, Pizza Bianca and Twilight Gleaming (IRE)—winning their races on Future Stars Friday and Championship Saturday.

Additional pledges are still coming in and final donations are still being tallied. Now in its 12th year, the Pledge has raised more than $940,000, with 100 percent of funds going directly to support the program's rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming efforts.

“Eclipse and our partners consider Thoroughbred aftercare of paramount importance and it is our duty and pleasure to support New Vocations,” said Aron Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. “It is with great pride that we're able to send a portion of Aloha West's purse winnings from his Breeders' Cup Sprint victory to support an organization that's always ready to help a rehoming or retraining prospect.

“The partnership that owns Aloha West is comprised of a healthy blend of veteran owners who understand the importance of aftercare and newcomers, as well,” he added. “To see these newcomers learning about aftercare and supporting the cause is gratifying and good for the sport.”

In addition to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, winning connections include Brad H. Cox (Knicks Go); China Horse Club, WinStar Farm and Todd Pletcher (Life Is Good); Coolmore (Golden Pal); Michael W. McCarthy (Ce Ce); Speedway Stables and Bob Baffert (Corniche); Bobby Flay (Pizza Bianca); and Stonestreet Stables (Twilight Gleaming). This year's pledge participants also include Al Shaqab Racing, Albaugh Family Stables, Jim Bakke, Richard Baltas, Bonne Chance Farm, Bing Bush & the Abbondanza Racing Partners, Cannon Thoroughbreds, Bradley Thoroughbreds, DJ Stable, Michael Dubb, Brad Grady, Hat Creek Racing, LNJ Foxwoods, Paulo H. Lobo, Madaket Stables, Kenny McPeek, Elizabeth M. Merryman, Peter Miller, MyRacehorse, Patricia's Hope LLC, Richard Ravin, Larry Rivelli, J. Kirk & Judy Robison, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, SF Racing, Joe Sharp, Siena Farm, Spendthrift Farm, St. Elias Stable, Starlight Racing, Stud RDI, Three Diamonds Farm, Treadway Racing Stable, West Point Thoroughbreds and White Birch Farm.

“It was truly amazing to have eight pledged contenders win this year,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Program Thoroughbred Program Director. “We were thrilled with the number of owners and trainers who joined the Pledge to support our aftercare efforts and mission to rehab, retrain and rehome these incredible equine athletes.”
