MANHATTAN DREAMER (Quality Road) debuts belatedly for Amo Racing and the Adrian Murray stable, with her $420,000 Keeneland September tag making her one to note as well as the fact that she is a full-sister to the GI Del Mar Futurity-winning sire Klimt. Another pricey newcomer is John Oxley's €330,000 Goffs Orby purchase Beautiful Dawn (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), a Joseph O'Brien-trained relative of the G2 Brisbane Cup winner Irish Sequel (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Falsified Delaware Workout Leads To $2,000 Fine

The stewards at Delaware Park have fined trainer Don Bryant, Jr. $2,000 for a series of “not conducting business in a proper manner” infractions that started with the falsification of a workout for an 0-for-12 maiden-claiming gelding he reportedly owns that hadn't raced in nearly a year.

According to the June 15 ruling, the stewards “received evidence that Trainer Bryant falsified a workout” for the 4-year-old gelding Dondada (Klimt) on May 10, 2023, at Delaware Park.

Dondada had not started since running second at Delaware on June 30, 2022.

The ruling further stated that, “Bryant did not have Dondada in his charge at the time horse was entered on June 3, 2023,” and that one week later, on June 10, “Bryant provided a false reason to the Stewards for a scratch [for] Dondada.”

A voicemail message left with the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission seeking details about the case and whether Bryant has appealed his penalty did not result in a return call prior to deadline for this story.

Bryant, 35, has trained since 2009 according to Equibase, compiling a 10-for-174 lifetime record. This year his mark is 1-for-14 with three horses who have raced at Parx and Delaware.

Beyond a $100 fine for necessitating a late scratch at Mountaineer Park in 2021, Bryant's rulings record in the database at thoroughbredrulings.com maintained by The Jockey Club shows no other infractions.

Klimt Filly Caps Big Day for McPeek in Iowa Oaks

Well-supported at 39-10, Butterbean (Klimt) completed a most productive Saturday for the Ken McPeek barn, accelerating sharply three furlongs out before cruising home to a handy success in Saturday's GIII Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows.

A convincing 5 3/4-length winner of the local Oaks prep in the June 11 Panthers S. over a mile, the chestnut was dragged back to last and dropped down onto the fence to caboose the field through an opening couple of furlongs in a solid :23.50. Content to bide her time in the rear, Butterbean had one beaten entering the turn, but made eyecatching progress inside at the three-eighths pole. Tipped out under a full head of steam by Glenn Corbett, Butterbean raced up to odds-on Falconet (Uncle Mo) with a bit more than a furlong to travel and scampered clear to score impressively. Free Like a Girl (El Deal) made the running inside of Falconet and held gamely for third.

McPeek was also represented by GI Belmont Derby upsetter Classic Causeway (Giant's Causeway) and Runaway Wife (Gun Runner) and Silverleaf (Speightster), second and third, respectively, in the GIII Indiana Oaks.

Runner-up in auction-price-restricted maiden allowances at Churchill in October and November last year, Butterbean completed the exacta in an 'open' Gulfstream maiden Jan. 22, but was only sixth in a similar test at Keeneland Apr. 10. A neck second when in search of a confidence boost against $75,000 maiden claimers beneath the Twin Spires May 4, the $22,000 Keeneland September bargain graduated 23 days later and made it two straight when last seen in the Panthers.

Pedigree Notes:

The first graded winner for the expatriated Klimt, Butterbean is out of an unplaced half-sister to GSW Conquest Daddyo (Scat Daddy) and SW Hangingbyathread (Giant's Causeway). Her 2-year-old half-brother Fast Forward (Bolt d'Oro) is unplaced in a single start in Churchill maiden special weight company this past May and Letting Go produced a full-sister to Butterbean last season.

Grade 1 Winner Klimt Sold To Stand In Turkey

Klimt, a Grade 1 winner and freshman sire, has been purchased by the Turkish Jockey Club, and he will relocate to that country for the 2022 breeding season, the Turkish publication Yaris Dergisi reports.

The 7-year-old son of Quality Road previously stood at Darby Dan Farm in Lexington, Ky., where he entered stud in 2018.

Klimt currently ranks sixth among North American freshman sires by progeny earnings, with $1,091,435 from 72 starters and 21 winners. His best runners to date include stakes-placed runners Rumble Strip Ron, Sea Art, Barone Cesco, and Quality Bet.

During his own on-track career, Klimt won three of eight starts, and earned $468,960. His resume was highlighted by victories in the Grade 1 Best Pal Stakes and G2 Best Pal Stakes.

Bred in Kentucky by Thor-Bred Stables, Klimt is out of the stakes-placed Dixie Union mare Inventive, and he's a half-brother to Grade 3-placed West Coast Chick. His extended family includes Grade 1 winners Concern and Fara's Team.
