Shadwell’s Tarneema Graduates Impressively At Fair Grounds

7th-Fair Grounds, $57,000, Msw, 2-9, 3yo, f, 1 1/16mT, 1:45.97, fm, 3 1/2 lengths.
TARNEEMA (f, 3, Kitten's Joy–Mooghareadh, by Malibu Moon) rallied from the clouds after a poor beginning but came up 4 1/4 lengths short of a pair of next-out winners in her debut over course and distance Dec. 31, an effort for which she received a 70 Beyer Speed Figure. Favored at even-money under Florent Geroux, the Shadwell homebred had a mildly better start and found herself mid pack while able to save ground against the fence. Angled outside of rivals from fifth turning for home, Tarneema unleashed a drive into the final furlong, easily got past late leader Tempting Lady (Enticed) and opened up to the wire to win by 3 1/2 lengths. Tarneema's dam, Mooghareadh, is a full-sister to MGSW/GISP Malibu Pier, herself the dam of GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf runner up and $1.3m FTKNOV broodmare Coasted (Tizway) and MGSP Malibu Stacy (Tizway). Shadwell purchased Mooghareadh as a yearling for $675,000 out of the 2014 KEESEP sale and has bred three winners from her from four to race. She has a 2-year-old Medaglia d'Oro colt, a yearling Street Sense colt and was covered by Jack Christopher for this year. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-1, $39,920. Practical Move Makes Stylish Return to the Races

8th-Santa Anita, $63,700, Alw (C)/Opt. Clm ($80,000), 10-6, 3yo/up, 1m, 1:35.14, ft, 4 lengths.
PRACTICAL MOVE (c, 3, Practical Joke–Ack Naughty {MSP, $310,450}, by Afleet Alex) has never been off the board in his career and after almost six months away since winning the GI Santa Anita Derby by the slimmest of noses over Mandarin Hero (Jpn) (Shanghai Bobby), he returned to the races here like he never left. Enthusiastically hammered down to 2-5 favoritism at the windows and on Lasix for the first time in his career, he left the blocks well against a short, albeit quality, field. Comfortably rated from the jump in third as Newgrange (Violence) and Tripoli (Kitten's Joy) disputed the early pace, he followed them up the backstretch and into the far turn where he challenged passing the quarter pole. Inhaling Tripoli coming off the bend, he kicked home when asked for more and coasted home much the best by four lengths.

“We were hoping for this,” said Yakteen. “Very happy with the way he ran, he'd been training very well but you never know until you run 'em…Things set up well for us today and he replicated what he's been doing in the morning.”

When asked about a potential next start, the conditoner declined to speculate: “We're going to take a day or two, think about where we'll go next and we'll figure it out.”

Ack Naughty's first offspring to the races and to garner black-type, Practical Move has a yearling half-brother by Complexity. Their 2023 Upstart half-sibling was stillborn and the dam went to the venerable Into Mischief for 2024. Sales history: $90,000 RNA Ylg '21 KEESEP; $230,000 2yo '22 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: GISW, 8-5-1-2, $923,200. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV.

3rd-Del Mar, $84,500, Msw, 9-2, 2yo, 6f, 1:11.43, ft, 1 1/2 lengths.
WINE ME UP (c, 2, Vino Rosso–Deanaallen'skitten {SW, $374,246}, by Kitten's Joy) found his feet after bobbling a touch at the jump and took no time getting to the front, speeding through :22.01, and :45.44 early splits as D'Oro Dash (Bolt d'Oro) hounded him from second as part of the lead trio. Vying with challengers through the turn, Wine Me Up had to dig, but found more in the stretch to kick away from his longtime shadow and score by 1 1/2 lengths.

Out of an accomplished racemare, the victor is the fifth to get his picture taken for the dam and has a yearling full-brother waiting in the wings. That sibling is thus far the last registered offspring as Deanallen'skitten did not catch in 2023. She visited Highly Motivated for 2024. Wine Me Up is Vino Rosso's ninth winner among multiple on the day. 'Insights' runner Arthur (Uncle Mo) finished eighth while $1.25m FTSAUG purchase Mc Vay (Constitution) placed one above him.
