Kingman’s Persian King Dominates At Chantilly

Despite his achievements to date, there is still a sense that TDN Rising Star Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) is a case of still waters running deep. Looking for another win at the highest level to complement his G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains success of 2019, he found it coming to him relatively easy in Sunday’s G1 Prix d’Ispahan at Chantilly. Shadowing the vastly-improved British raider Pogo (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}) straining Pierre-Charles Boudot’s reins initially, the 9-10 favourite was allowed to stride to the front approaching the two-furlong pole to put paid to any remaining stamina concerns. From there Godolphin and Ballymore Thoroughbred Ltd’s bay saw out the nine furlongs as strongly as it looked he would when finishing with a flourish last time in the G2 Prix du Muguet over a mile. There was a two-length winning margin and a gulf in class to the game veteran Stormy Antarctic (GB) (Stormy Atlantic) at the line, as Pogo clung on to third 1 3/4 lengths away. Anthony Stroud, representing connections, paid tribute to the trainer afterwards. “There is no need to say that Andre Fabre has done a marvellous job to bring him back to where he is now,” he said in reference to the winner’s substantial lay-off. “It’s been step-by-step and it will continue that way. He was a very good 2-year-old and has a lot of talent.”

Much water has passed under the bridge since Persian King beat Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in what has become a portent of things to follow in Newmarket’s G3 Autumn S. in October 2018. His Poulains victory in testing ground was followed by a reversal and an injury sustained in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club here last June and it was only June 10 when he was eventually able to return to active duty. In all likelihood shy of a peak, he had the misfortune to come up against a progressive talent from his own yard and was turned over by Magny Cours (Medaglia d’Oro) in the Listed Prix de Montretout over a mile back at this venue. The subsequent exploits of that stablemate when winning a competitive renewal of Sandown’s Listed Gala S. shed more favourable light on that effort and Persian King was able to build as he dispatched the two considerable compatriots Pretreville (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}) and Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in the Muguet at Saint-Cloud June 28.

Stroud was not ruling out a potential tilt at the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and added, “It is a distinct possibility, but obviously it depends on Andre and the owners. In the French Derby, he was drawn wide on the outside and got injured in the race, so you can’t categorically say he doesn’t stay. The jury is still out and his family suggests he could stay a mile and a half.” Fabre seemed set on reverting to a mile afterwards as he said, “At one stage, the [G1] Juddmonte International was an option, but now I think that I will run him in the [G1 Prix] Jacques le Marois [at Deauville Aug. 16].”

Persian King’s dam Pretty Please (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) is a three-parts sister to the G1 Prix Ganay hero Planteur (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and a half to the dual listed winner Pilote d’Essai (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). The third dam Palmeraie (Lear Fan) is kin to three black-type winners, most notably the GII Long Island H. heroine Peinture Bleue (Alydar) who later produced the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero and leading sire Peintre Celebre.

Kingman’s Guru a New Rising Star On Debut At Newbury

Newbury’s bet365 EBF Novice S. at Saturday looked the type of race to throw up something special beforehand and the feast of fancy pedigrees duly delivered as Lady Bamford’s newcomer Guru (GB) (Kingman {GB}) denied Juddmonte’s Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in a photo. Settled off the pace as Adam Kirby found a lead throughout the early stages of this seven-furlong contest, the 8-1 shot had to surrender first run to the eventual runner-up inside the final two furlongs but picked up in style to reel in that rival in the final stride. At the line, the homebred son of the high-class Dream Peace (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) had prevailed by a nose from the son of Joyeuse (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), with three lengths separating them and Legend of Dubai (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). That first foal out of the G1 Prix Jean Romanet and G1 Prix de l’Opera heroine Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal) was making it a one-two-three for the blueblooded newcomers in a race that could be talked about for some time to come.

John Gosden’s son Thady was on hand to discuss the winner and said, “He did everything right in the race and is a pretty laid-back horse at home. He was taking everything in today on this first day at school and he may be one to treat gently and take in a novice rather than going straight into a group race. Sir Michael Stoute’s horse [Maximal] looked a lovely horse in the paddock, so we were pleased to be there with him at the end.”

Guru looks as if he could be the best progeny so far out of Dream Peace, who was bought for 2.7million gns at the 2013 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Initially with Robert Collet, the Kilfrush Stud-bred mare captured the G2 Prix de la Nonette and was third in the GI E.P. Taylor S. and runner-up in the GI Diana S. before joining Chad Brown and placing in the GI Flower Bowl Invitational and the E.P. Taylor and Diana again. The second dam is Truly a Dream (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}) who captured the E.P. Taylor when it was staged as a grade II and also the G3 Prix de Royaumont before producing the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains runner-up Catcher In the Rye (Ire) (Danehill). Also connected to the top-class trio of L’Ancresse (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), Moonstone (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}) and Cerulean Sky (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), Dream Peace’s yearling colt is by Frankel (GB).

Kingman’s Summer Romance Makes All In the Princess Elizabeth

Saturday’s G3 Princess Elizabeth S. at Epsom turned into an extremely tactical affair, with William Buick on the money dictating on Godolphin’s TDN Rising Star Summer Romance (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) to make all. Always comfortable setting a moderate pace shadowed by the G1 1000 Guineas runner-up Cloak of Spirits (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), the one-time exciting Listed Empress S. winner who had threatened to disappear into the wilderness was always holding that rival in the sprint up the straight. Hitting the line with 3/4 of a length to spare, the 9-1 shot was announcing a return to form as Rose of Kildare (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) snatched third, 3 3/4 lengths away.

“She ran in the Guineas, but I wasn’t in a good position–I had a wall of bad horses in front of me,” Buick explained. “It was hard to notice it with the naked eye, but she did a lot of good work in the Guineas. She was staying on past horses. Last year she was obviously very speedy, very sharp, but Charlie was adamant a mile was within her compass. Obviously I got a soft lead today and it definitely suited her. She really deserved that. She’s always been perceived as a nice filly in the stable. I’m just so glad she’s got a group win next to her name and she’s a filly that should go through the grades nicely.”

Summer Romance was two-for-two after her six-length success in the six-furlong Empress at Newmarket in June, but the wheels came off when sixth in Ascot’s G3 Princess Margaret S. the following month. Charlie Appleby felt there were unmitigating circumstances for that flop and she was put away after a subsequent underwhelming third in the G3 Dick Poole Fillies’ S. also over six at Salisbury in September. Returning with an eighth in the June 7 G1 1000 Guineas, where she was almost six lengths adrift of Cloak of Spirits, the grey cut a different figure here even allowing for her rider’s guile on a day where closers were finding it tough.

Charlie Appleby said, “It was a great ride by William and we are very pleased to see Summer Romance win a group three race. She won on debut last year before scoring impressively in the Empress Stakes, but lost her way a little bit afterwards. We felt that she would come forward for her first run of the season in the 1000 Guineas and she has done it well in the end. It is nice to see her get her head in front and, while we have no immediate plans, we can think about looking for some more nice races.”

Summer Romance is out of Serena’s Storm (Ire) (Statue of Liberty), who also produced the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Rizeena (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}). Serena’s Storm is kin to three stakes winners, most notably the G1 Prix d’Ispahan hero Zabeel Prince (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and the G2 Blamey S. winner Puissance de Lune (Ire) and the Listed Haras de Bouquetot Fillies’ Trial scorer Queen Power (Ire) both by Lope de Vega’s sire Shamardal. The third dam Serena’s Sister (Rahy) is a full-sibling of the remarkable champion Serena’s Song, whose six individual stakes winners are headed by the G1 Coronation S. heroine and stakes-producing Sophisticat (Storm Cat). Serena’s Storm also has an as-yet unraced 2-year-old filly by Iffraaj (GB) named Serena’s Queen (Ire), and a yearling filly by Dark Angel (Ire).

Kingman’s Persian King Back To Winning Ways In the Muguet

Upset on his return when second in the Listed Prix de Montretout over a mile at Chantilly June 10, Godolphin and Ballymore Thoroughbred Ltd’s Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) was back in shape and on track in Sunday’s G2 Prix du Muguet at Saint-Cloud. Taken straight to the lead by Pierre-Charles Boudot, last year’s G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains hero was threatened and briefly headed by the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil winner Pretreville (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}) passing two out. Quickly regaining the advantage, the 3-5 favourite finished full of running to beat that rival by 1 1/4 lengths, with 3/4 of a length back to Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in third.

“I knew after his last race that he would come on a lot for it and that’s exactly what happened,” Boudot said. “He was very relaxed in front and when they made their move and he was slightly outpaced but then he quickened and showed a very nice action. I still had something left at the end, he was far from finished so that’s a very good sign and also we know he’ll go a bit further.” Making his first appearance since finishing runner-up in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club when caught out in the Montretout, the imposing Persian King can now go back to the top level after two sharpeners. That could come in the G1 Prix d’Ispahan at Chantilly July 19 according to Boudot. “I think his next target is the Prix d’Ispahan and I am sure that another furlong will be okay for him,” he added.
