‘TDN Rising Star’ Padishakh Returns At Chantilly

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. PADISHAKH (FR) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) earned TDN Rising Star status on debut when beating the subsequent winner Halfway Line (GB) (Zoffany {Ire}) at ParisLongchamp at the start of last month. Jean-Claude Rouget keeps Nurlan Bizakov's bay out of black-type company for now, with Ecurie Jean-Louis Bouchard's Deauville winner King Of Records (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) from the Fabrice Chappet stable a key opponent.

LONDONER (IRE) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) is one of two Ballydoyle representatives in this and is a €270,000 Goffs Orby graduate whose dam is the G1 Prix de l'Abbaye heroine Gilt Edge Girl (GB) (Monsieur Bond {Ire}). The April-foaled chestnut meets Newtown Anner Stud Farm Ltd's fellow newcomer Mr King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), a Ger Lyons-trained half-brother to the G3 Munster Oaks winner and G1 Pretty Polly S. third Thunder Kiss (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}).

 

5.50 Kempton, Novice, £9,900, 2yo, 7f (AWT)
HIGHER LAW (IRE) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) is yet another Charlie Appleby blueblood introduced at a track he favours, being a homebred son of Godolphin's G1 Fillies' Mile, G2 May Hill S. and G2 Cape Verdi winner Certify (Elusive Quality). The February-foaled half-brother to this year's Listed Abu Dhabi Championship scorer Law Of Peace (GB) (Shamardal) faces nine on this racecourse bow.

Kingman’s Kinross Takes The Foret

Marc Chan's TDN Rising Star Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) had not always had the rub of the green throughout his career, but it all fell right in Sunday's G1 Qatar Prix de la Foret Presente par Education Above All that closed out ParisLongchamp's top-level action.

Now firmly established at the head of the seven-furlong division having won the G2 City Of York S. and G2 Park S., the Ralph Beckett-trained 5-year-old had a wide draw to overcome but Frankie Dettori was all for taking a deep breath as the principals committed in the straight. Launched to strike the front passing the furlong pole, the 17-10 favourite was comfortable as he registered a commanding two-length success from Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) as the enterprisingly-ridden Entscheiden (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) hung tough to repeat his 2021 third, a length further back.

“I always had huge faith in him and he's had a fantastic year,” Beckett said. “As a 3-year-old, he was already on the very big side and after being gelded he had a difficult time of it but has really come into his own now. He's a really special horse for the stable.”

Kinross knocked the eye out on his juvenile debut at Newmarket when earning TDN Rising Star status on this weekend three years ago, so it was deflating that only one of his next eight starts saw him make the frame when taking the Listed Hyde S. After his gelding op, he looked a revived character when winning Haydock's G3 John of Gaunt S. and Goodwood's G2 Lennox S. last summer but there were still occasions when it looked too laboured such as when he was unable to land a serious blow in fourth in this behind the class acts Space Blues (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the indomitable Entscheiden 12 months ago.

It may only be that the real Kinross emerged as he sauntered to success in the City of York and followed up at Doncaster and he gave Frankie all the right signs to allow him to ride with maximum confidence here despite the wide trip. A strong stayer at this trip, he was kept in his lane four off the fence and proved a straightforward conveyance as he surged by the Japanese raider.

Malavath, who was runner-up in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last term, could be set for a return according to trainer Francis-Henri Graffard. “She ran a superb race. She was supposed to head to the States to run a Grade I race, but since the beginning of the year her requirements have been two-fold; soft ground and 1400 metres so we decided to remain in France and try our luck in the Foret. We will think about going on our travels with her during the winter, but it's no easy thing as she is a genuine 1400-metre filly. Maybe she will stay 1600 on the US tracks.”

Yoshito Yahagi, trainer of Entscheiden, commented, “He had already finished third in this race last year. The field this year was not as strong and I was hoping he could win this time around, but otherwise there is not much to say. He ran well and clearly likes Europe. I hope that I can return here with him in the

future.”

Kinross, who becomes the fifth Group 1 winner for his sire, is out of the fellow Beckett-trained Listed Gillies Fillies' S. winner Ceilidh House (GB) (Selkirk) whose dam Villa Carlotta (GB) (Rainbow Quest) took the Listed Blue Wind S. and Listed Premio Giovanni Falck. Villa Carlotta, who is also the second dam of the G3 Solario S. winner and G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains runner-up First Selection (Spa) (Diktat {GB}), is a half to the GII Virginia Derby and GII Colonial Turf Cup winner and GI Hollywood Derby runner-up Battle Of Hastings (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}). Ceilidh House's unraced 2-year-old colt by Sea The Moon (Ger) is named Seahouses (GB).

George Strawbridge's homebred filly meets Ecurie Ama.zingteam's Huggy Wuggy (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), a Francis-Henri Graffard-trained half-brother to another former Head luminary in Naaqoos (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

BEYLERBEYI (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) earned TDN Rising Star status on debut over a furlong further at Deauville last month and is asked to give weight away by Jean-Claude Rouget due to a subsequent penalty. Al Shaqab Racing's homebred faces seven including the Wertheimers' Zoom (Fr) (No Nay Never), an Andre Fabre-trained grandson of the G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Pas De Reponse (Danzig) in yet another Head family connection.

Kingman’s Commissioning Stars In The Rockfel

Newmarket's Cambridgeshire meeting is always a hotbed of future Classic prospects and Friday's G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Rockfel S. unearthed one of the most exciting from Britain in 2022 as Isa Salman and Abdulla Al Khalifa's Commissioning (GB) (Kingman {GB}) maintained her unbeaten record in the 'Win and You're In' qualifier for the Nov. 4 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Impressive in a July Course novice over this seven-furlong trip that has worked out well July 30, the John and Thady Gosden-trained bay was always travelling smoothly for Robert Havlin racing far side halfway down the field. Showing some signs of greenness but also evidence of a huge engine as she arrived into contention running down into the dip, the hooded 7-2 second favourite took the measure of Rage Of Bamby (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) a furlong out and readily asserted on the climb to the line. She had 2 3/4 lengths to spare there over the eye-catching closer Electric Eyes (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), another Karl Burke juvenile to make an impact in a hot race, with Rage Of Bamby fading late to be 1 1/4 lengths further away in third.

“I had to wake her up a bit and almost got into trouble by getting there too soon, so I just sat there at the two pole,” Havlin said. “When she picked up, it was kind of immediate and I got a bit lonely in front. She would stay a mile no problem–I ride her quite a lot at home and we've always thought that as she finishes her work strongly. She can be busy in the mornings but is uncomplicated at the races.”

John Gosden is looking at a potential quick return to the Rowley Mile for the G1 Fillies' Mile in two weeks' time.

“We wanted to give her a bit of time after her debut, as she was growing and she is not a big heavy robust filly. Frankie said he couldn't pull her up after her debut and she went all the way to the very end. She was just getting rolling with a furlong to go there and it was slightly the same today. The Fillies' Mile comes quickly, but she doesn't have to run again after and it is close to home. If she is happy and well, we might look at it. There is also a Breeders' Cup invitation. We did that before we went to Del Mar with a filly that won this. She didn't stay a mile, but this one will.”

Karl Burke said of the runner-up, “She is a potentially high-class filly and she has proved that today. She got a little bit sandwiched coming out of the stalls and we didn't want to be that far back. She is quite a keen-travelling horse and she always wants a bit of cover. I'd say we won't run again. She is an inexperienced filly, but she is a big raw filly and this time of the year I don't want to run her back quick and we are running out of options. The horse that finished second in this last year didn't do too bad in the 1000 Guineas!”

Eve Johnson Houghton said of Rage Of Bamby, “I definitely think she was the second-best horse in the race. I think she had been softened up by the winner and the second horse came and got her. Possibly we need to drop her back in trip, as she had them all cooked a furlong out and I'm not sure she stayed the seven furlongs 100 per cent in that company.”

Commissioning is the first runner for the dam, whose son of Fastnet Rock (Aus) sells at the upcoming Book 2. A €175,000 purchase from the Aga Khan Studs draft at the 2010 Arqana December Mixed Sale, she is a full-sister to a pair of talented Ballydoyle performers in the G1 Irish Derby and G1 St Leger hero Capri (Ire) and the G3 Stanerra S. winner and G1 Irish Oaks and G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S.-placed Passion (Ire). Also a full-sibling to the G3 Loughbrown S.-winning stayer Cypress Creek (Ire), the Cheltenham Festival winning hurdler Brazil (Ire) and Rosegreen's 'TDN Rising Star' juvenile Tower of London (Ire), she is a granddaughter of the G2 Prix de Malleret and G3 Prix de la Nonette scorer and G1 Prix Vermeille runner-up Diamilina (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}).

The fourth dam is the Malleret runner-up Diamonaka (Fr) (Akarad {Fr}), whose sire son Diamond Green (Fr) (Green Desert) was runner-up in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and G1 St James's Palace S., while she is also the second dam of the G1 Melbourne Cup runner-up Bauer (Ire) (Halling).
