Coronation Runner-Up Remarquee Purchased By Wathnan Racing

Group 3 winner Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}) has been purchased privately by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. She has been entered in his Wathnan Racing colours for Newmarket's G1 Falmouth S. later this month.

Owned through her first four starts by Julian Richmond-Watson, the 3-year-old daughter of listed winner and dual Group 3-placed Regardez (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) won her first racecourse appearance at Salisbury at two and the G3 Fred Darling S. at Newbury this spring. Unplaced in the G1 1000 Guineas, the Lawn Stud-bred rebounded to run second in the G1 Coronation S., just a length behind Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) at Royal Ascot.

Earlier Wathnan purchases include G3 Greenham S. winner and G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains second Isaac Shelby (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), as well as Royal Ascot winners Gregory (GB) (Golden Horn {GB})–who won the G2 Queen's Vase–and G1 Gold Cup hero Courage Mon Ami (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Kingman’s TDN Rising Star Age Of Kings Wins The Jersey

Things hadn't gone smoothly for Westerberg, Magnier, Tabor, Smith and Brant's TDN Rising Star Age Of Kings (Ire) (Kingman {GB}–Turret Rocks {Ire}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}) since last summer, but it finally clicked into place for the talented Ballydoyle second-string and Wayne Lordan in Saturday's G3 Jersey S. at Royal Ascot. In the shadow of Ryan Moore's choice The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), the 1.1million gns Book 1 graduate was nevertheless let go at a surprising 22-1 given that Aidan O'Brien had run him first time up this season in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas.

Placed close to the strong early pace set by the 11-4 favourite Covey (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the son of the G2 May Hill S. winner Turret Rocks was committed inside the two and had to fight to the line as the closers came. Finding it in time, he prevailed by a length and a neck from fellow outsiders Zoology (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) and Streets Of Gold (Ire) (Havana Gold {Ire}) respectively to provide his trainer with an 85th Royal winner and deliver a 12th Royal Ascot trainer's title.

 

Granted his TDN Rising Star tag following his emphatic Curragh conditions win at the beginning of last June, Age Of Kings had come here days later to contest the G2 Coventry S. and was seventh before returning to Kildare to be a close fourth in the G2 Railway S. on his third start in 25 days. Whether that busy workload cost him afterwards is hard to say, but it was significant that he was the stable's chosen representative in Leopardstown's G3 Tyros S. in July which is always a marker of merit when it comes to Ballydoyle's juveniles. Only third there before disappearing off the radar, he was a surprise member of the line-up for the Irish Guineas and although he was 10th he was beaten less than eight lengths by Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}).

“Wayne kept it uncomplicated and said he'd get a mile if we wanted,” O'Brien said. “The Guineas was only his first run of the year, it was a very good run and he came forward from that.” Lordan added, “At two he had a few runs and maybe got a bit weak, but he's come back and he's stepped forward nicely, even in his work.”

Trainer James Ferguson said of Zoology, “They went very hard and, in the mid-stage of the race, you just think he's struggling to keep up but they've all come back and he's stayed on very well. It's a tough race this and the fast ground certainly suited him. He has done absolutely nothing wrong and ran a super race in the Greenham, when he obviously didn't like the ground. Back on a sounder surface, he's run an absolute belter of a race and I've got very high hopes for this horse. I think he could be a superstar.”

Streets Of Gold's trainer Eve Johnson Houghton said, “That's probably the hardest race he has run in and, on Timeform figures, that's probably the highest he's ever run to. He is in the Bunbury Cup, we might go there or we might try to find an easy race to win–we will see.”

Age Of Kings is the first foal out of the aforementioned Turret Rocks, who also took the G3 Blue Wind S. and G3 Meld S. and was runner-up in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and third in the G1 Pretty Polly S. for Jim Bolger. She is a half-sister to Beyond Thankful (Ire) (Whipper), who captured the G3 Newcastle Cup and was second in the G3 Killavullan S, while this is also the family of the G2 Fuji TV Sho Spring S. winner and G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) third Galore Creek (Jpn) (Kinshasa no Kiseki {Aus}), the G3 Stanerra S. winner Cimeara (Ire) (Vocalised) and her 2-year-old full-sister Comhra (Ire) who was third in last month's G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. Turret Rocks, who is also related to the brilliant Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), has the 2-year-old colt by Too Darn Hot (GB) who was a 600,000gns purchase by David Redvers at last year's Book 1 Sale. Named Trafalgar Square (Ire), he is followed by a yearling full-brother to Age Of Kings.

Frankel And Kingman Available On Southern Hemisphere Time

Juddmonte stallions Frankel (GB) and Kingman (GB) will both be available to cover mares on Southern Hemisphere time, the TDN AusNZ reported on Thursday morning. The former will remain at £125,000 and his 50-mare SH book is already mostly full. The latter's fee will be £40,000.

“I had it confirmed to me only this morning [Wednesday] that there are only two stallions in history who have sired a 2-year-old Group 1 winner in Australia having never stood there,” Shane Horan, Juddmonte's stallion nominations manager, told the publication. “Frankel is one and Kingman is the other, and the fact that they're at the same farm at the same time is phenomenal.”

Besides siring G1 J.J. Atkins S. winner King Colorado (Aus) on the weekend, Kingman was also represented by Group 3 winner Sinawann (Ire) taking an Australian listed event during the same timeframe. Of his 23 runners in Australasia,15 are winners. Besides the aforementioned stakes winners, the son of Invincible Spirit (Ire) also has Group 3 winner Emissary (GB) and the Group 3-placed Tass (Aus).

“From a marketing point of view, his big selling point to an Aussie market is that he was a brilliant miler with a high cruising speed and a killer turn of foot,” Horan said. “He passes that on to his progeny. He is also the highest-rated son of Invincible Spirit, who is, of course, the sire of I Am Invincible (Aus), and I Am Invincible has been a revelation in Australia.

“He typically gets them looking like himself,” Horan added. “He's an elegant stallion. He's lightly made and light on his feet. His progeny tend to race with a high head-carriage and he's passing on that great acceleration. It seems like he's ideally suited to those mares with lots of substance, and he will add in all the quality you could ask for.”

“It's hard to predict what sort of numbers we'll expect for him [Kingman] this September,” he said. “I'll know a lot more by the Tattersalls July Sale up here when many of the Australian breeders and agents will be in attendance.”

Frankel's Australasian stats are no less remarkable. The sire of 121 stakes winners worldwide, the 15-year-old has 16 winners from 40 runners Down Under. All 16 of those winners have struck at stakes level, with his 12 group winners led by Group 1 winners Hungry Heart (Aus), Mirage Dancer (GB), and Converge (Aus). The last-named also won the G1 J.J. Atkins.

“Frankel, physically, is a bull of a stallion,” Horan said. “There's probably a lot of Danehill coming through in him. His mother was a very typical Danehill mare, and he's probably more suited by the elegant type of mare. Kingman is probably less fussy on the size of mare sent, but a mare with substance and plenty of bone is recommended.”

Both stallions will stand to Southern Hemisphere time on Special Live Foal (SLF) terms. The fee is payable 45 days from the last service date (when the mare is confirmed in-foal) and should anything happen to the foal within 48 hours of birth in Australia, a full refund on the service fee will be provided. Juddmonte is also supplying a £10,000 travel allowance for mares travelling up from the Southern Hemisphere, which is useful when it comes to a £40,000) service fee for Kingman.

“Kingman is often overshadowed by Frankel, which is understandable,” Horan said. “Frankel has tied with Danehill as the fastest stallion to 100 worldwide stakes winners in terms of numbers of days taken to achieve it, and in terms of getting to 50 stakes winners by number of days, Frankel was also the fastest, beating Dubawi (Ire) who beat Galileo (Ire). But in the meanwhile, Kingman didn't reach 50 as fast as Frankel, but he was quicker to do it than Dubawi and Galileo. So that gives you a perspective on where this horse sits.”
