Adayar Echoes Galileo In Epsom Derby-King George Double

Adayar made his own slice of history as he became the first Epsom Derby winner since Galileo to follow up in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QICPO Stakes.

The son of Frankel put in a superb performance under William Buick to fend off a classy field, with both Mishriff and Love chasing him home.

Hitting the front early on in the home straight the Cazoo Derby winner was immediately challenged by older rival Mishriff. There was a brief tussle for the lead before the relentless Adayar pulled clear. The Godolphin colt eventually prevailed by a length-and-three-quarters.

William Buick commented immediately after the race, “I'm speechless, to be honest. He gives you the feel of endless power and it's a privilege to ride a horse like this because they don't come around very often.

“Charlie (Appleby) wasn't worried about the ground and good horses can adapt and that's exactly what this horse did. It was a very simple race to ride once he dropped his head. When I picked him up he was instant and relentless until the line.”

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a Win and You're In event for the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf. Winners receive a free, guaranteed spot in the starting gate for the corresponding Breeders' Cup race, to be held Nov. 6 at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

High-Class Field Of Six Remain For Saturday’s King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes

The 2021 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes at Ascot looks set to provide a memorable battle of the generations as a high-class field of six is headlined by the star 4-year-old filly Love (Aidan O'Brien), who will take on this year's Derby winner Adayar (Charlie Appleby).

The Group 1 contest offers the winner an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Longines Turf this fall at Del Mar.

A dual-Classic winner last year, Love returned to action this season by winning the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot. She will be joined by her Group 1 winning stablemate Broome.

Wonderful Tonight (David Menuisier) is also declared for the race, having gotten the better of Broome when winning the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at the Royal Meeting in June.

Further intrigue is provided by Mishriff (John & Thady Gosden), who has recorded international success this year in Saudi Arabia and Dubai and steps up to a mile and a half in this country for the first time.

Completing the line-up is Lone Eagle (Martyn Meade), the other 3-year-old runner in the race who was second in the Irish Derby, form which has already been franked by the winner Hurricane Lane.

Ahead of the race, Adayar's trainer Charlie Appleby, said: “I'm delighted with his preparation; he looks a million dollars. It's going to be a fantastic race to watch hopefully and whoever wins it will be top of the mile and a half division.

“It looks at the moment as if it was a good Derby. It [winning the King George and the Derby] hasn't been done since Galileo so for Adayar to turn up here is a huge occasion for everybody.

“It's a challenge and now we're stepping up into the big boy division so it's going to be a fascinating race. We're looking forward to it and excited to see what Adayar does.”

Nijinsky’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes Win Celebrated With QIPCO Diamonds And Pearls Award On 50th Anniversary

Each year, to mark QIPCO's sponsorship of the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the winner of a vintage renewal is commemorated. To honor his illustrious achievements and victory in the race 50 years ago, Nijinsky became the latest recipient of the QIPCO Diamonds & Pearls award, won last year by Nashwan.

The son of Northern Dancer had already captured the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby, and started at odds of 40-85 for Ascot's 1970 renewal. Nijinsky, the only 3-year-old in the field, cruised past his rivals on the bridle and defeated the previous year's Derby winner, Blakeney, to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes by an effortless two lengths.

Owned by Charles W. Engelhard Jr., trained by Vincent O'Brien and partnered by jockey Lester Piggott, Nijinsky went on to win the St Leger, and in doing so, became the first racehorse in 35 years to win the Triple Crown. A feat which no colt has matched since.

Following his impressive racing career, Nijinsky went on to stand at stud in the U.S. where he sired 155 stakes/group winners and remains the only sire to have the winner at the Kentucky and Epsom Derbies in the same year (1986 – Ferdinand & Sharastani). His notable progeny include King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winners Ile de Bourbon (1978) and Lammtarra (1995).

Lester Piggott, retired jockey, said;

“I am delighted to receive the QIPCO Diamonds and Pearls award. Nijinsky was a wonderful horse and was unbeaten at the time. There was a lot of hype going into the King George – the opposition was decent, they were good horses, every one of them had a chance. You had all the best – obviously we thought he would win. He came to the other horses in the straight so easily, it was hard to believe really but he won in a canter. It was a wonderful win and was probably the best performance of his career.”
