Godolphin Bluebloods Take The Eye At Newmarket

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday's Observations features several well-pedigreed runners in the Godolphin blue.

1.55 Killarney, Mdn, €15,000, 2yo, 8f 30yT
THE PRAIRIE (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is the eighth foal out of the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Again (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and therefore a full-brother to the dual group 1-placed Delphinia (Ire), the multiple group-placed Delano Roosevelt (Ire) and the listed scorer Indian Maharaja (Ire). Aidan O'Brien introduces the February-foaled bay alongside Gulf Of Mexico (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the 1.1-million gns Book 1 sensation who looked so promising on debut at The Curragh before backtracking at Punchestown last time.

2.50 ParisLongchamp, Cond, €300,000, 2yo, 8fT
DENMARK (GB) (Camelot {GB}) represents Ballydoyle in this Haras de Bouquetot Criterium Arqana for Arqana yearling graduates of 2021 and is an exciting prospect having won on his sole start over this trip at Naas at the start of last month. At €440,000 the Arqana Deauville October topper, the son of the dual Group 3 winner and G1 Prix de l'Opera runner-up Board Meeting (Ire) (Anabaa) meets Prime Equestrian Racing's bargain €13,000 October purchase Munch (GB) (New Bay {GB}). From the David Menuisier stable, she upstaged the subsequent impressive listed winner Sirona (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) in Goodwood's British EBF £100,000 2yo Fillies Series Final earlier this month.

3.17 Newmarket, Mdn, £10,000, 2yo, 8fT
IMPERIAL FRONTIER (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}) is the second foal out of the GI Man o' War S. heroine Zhukova (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who is a half to Dubawi's brilliant Ghaiyyath (Ire) who excelled for this colt's connections after starting his career at this track. Charlie Appleby introduces the February-foaled full-brother to the stable's surefire future pattern-race performer First Ruler (GB) in a line-up that includes Saeed Suhail's A Dublin Lad (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}), the John and Thady Gosden-trained half-brother to the G2 Hungerford S. winner Sacred (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). A non-runner here at the last meeting, he is a 300,000gns Book 1 graduate which made him the sire's clear highest-priced progeny sold at auction last year.

3.52 Newmarket, Mdn, £10,000, 2yo, 7fT
MILITARY ORDER (IRE) (Frankel {GB}) is the second Godolphin newcomer to take the eye on the card, being an April-foaled full-brother to the 2021 Derby and King George-winning sensation Adayar (Ire). Charlie Appleby's representative meets Jeff Smith's similarly-unraced Arabian Storm (GB) (Kingman {GB}), an Andrew Balding-trained son of the owner-breeder's G1 Juddmonte International heroine Arabian Queen (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who has already produced two winners by Frankel (GB) and one smart stayer in Spirit Mixer (GB).

Observations: Luxembourg’s Brother on Show at Killarney

5.15 Killarney, Mdn, €15,000, 2yo, 8f 20yT
HIAWATHA (IRE) (Camelot {GB}), Ballydoyle's chosen one as he debuts in the opener to this beautiful venue's week-long July Festival, is a rare commodity as a full-brother to the stable's G1 Futurity Trophy and G2 Beresford S. hero Luxembourg (Ire) who made a successful racecourse bow at this meeting 12 months ago and has been a notable absentee from the top action since sustaining an injury after his 2000 Guineas third. The top-priced colt at last year's Goffs Orby at €1.2million, the March-foaled bay is in the maiden won 12 months ago by Piz Badile (Ire) (Ulysses {Ire}) and in which Buckaroo (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) was third, and their respective trainers Donnacha and Joseph O'Brien have a trio engaged between them including Joseph's Qatar Racing unraced colt Valiant King (GB), one of the few by Roaring Lion whose dam is a half to the group 1 performer Teletext (Empire Maker).

Caroline Herschel A New Rising Star At Killarney

Away from the hustle and bustle of Newmarket and ParisLongchamp, Killarney staged a relatively low-key card on Saturday but the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden revealed one to generate excitement in new TDN Rising Star Caroline Herschel (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Homebred by Vimal and Gillian Khosla, the March-foaled chestnut started the mile contest as a 14-1 shot hailing from the in-form Jessica Harrington stable on what looked a demanding debut tackling some well-regarded colts. Worse than mid-division early, she had plenty to do at halfway but came on strong to loom seven-wide on the home turn. Taking control with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining, she drew away to score impressively by 3 1/2 lengths from Comfort Zone (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}), who had been ninth on debut behind another TDN Rising Star in Eclat de Lumiere (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Ballydoyle's 11-10 favourite Sun King (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was a further 1 1/4 lengths behind in third.

“It was a very good performance first time, as she's a very big filly,” rider Nathan Crosse said of the imposing winner, who is the third TDN Rising Star for her late sire. “She broke well and I thought we went very hard on that ground and I couldn't really go with them. I let her find her feet and turning in we picked up again and once I gave her a shove, she picked up the bridle and did it nicely going away. In the end, I got there too early. She is a very big filly, so obviously hasn't run until the back end of the year but will be a lovely filly next year.”

The unraced dam Compostela (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who was a 72,000gns purchase at the 2016 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, is off to a flyer as a broodmare with her first foal being the G3 Killavullan S. winner and GII Honeymoon S. runner-up Stela Star (Ire) (Epaulette {Aus}). The second dam is Lael Stable's G3 King George S. and G3 Molecomb S. winner Enticing (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), whose high-class daughter One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) needs no introduction as the triple G1 Prix de la Foret heroine who also captured the G3 Oak Tree S. and G3 Fairy Bridge S. and was placed in two editions of the G1 Qipco British Champions Sprint S., as well as the G1 Falmouth S. and G1 Queen Anne S. The third dam is the G2 Flying Childers S. and G3 Norfolk S.-winning European champion 2-year-old filly Superstar Leo (Ire) (College Chapel {GB}). Compostela's 2021 colt is by Too Darn Hot (GB).

First Winner For Ulysses At Killarney

Cheveley Park Stud's Ulysses (Ire) (by Galileo {Ire}) was the latest first-season sire to be represented by a first winner on Monday as Flaxman Stables Ireland's Piz Badile (Ire) took Killarney's opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden over a mile. The first foal out of the Listed Prix Zarkava winner and G2 Prix Corrida runner-up That Which Is Not (Elusive Quality), the Donnacha O'Brien-trained colt tracked the early pace in second and travelled easily to the fore passing three out along with The Aga Khan's Karakoul (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}). Headed by that rival two out, the 3-1 second favourite regained the advantage close home to prevail by a neck under Gavin Ryan. “We always thought he was one of our best ones, he's a beautiful big horse and did well to win as he was green and raw and was against a few rivals with experience,” the winning trainer said. “Hopefully he is a smart horse for the future. He is massive and wouldn't have run this year, only he was working that well. Whatever he does this year is going to be a bonus and will be a real horse next year. It's an all-10-furlong type of pedigree–Ulysses won the Juddmonte and the mare was ten furlongs. That's what he'll probably end up getting. He is the only Ulysses horse I have and I think he is smart anyway.” Remarkably, That Which Is Not who also has a yearling colt by Shamardal and a 2021 filly by Kingman (GB), was the only black-type performer out of the operation's high-class mare Shiva (Jpn) (Hector Protector), who took the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, G3 Brigadier Gerard S. and G3 Earl of Sefton S. and was placed in the G1 Champion S. and G1 Eclipse S. Shiva is also the second dam of Threat (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), who captured the G2 Gimcrack S. and G2 Champagne S., the G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial runner-up Radiantly (GB) (Aussie Rules) and the G2 Coventry S. third Eltezam (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). Her half-sister Light Shift (Kingmambo), who was the heroine of the G1 Epsom Oaks, is the dam of Ulysses himself whose winning exploits included the G1 Juddmonte International and G1 Eclipse.
