Raven’s Pass’s Lemista Takes the Kilboy Estate

Ger Lyons had suffered a rare downturn at The Curragh’s weekend meeting when Frenetic (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) was overturned in the G2 Airlie Stud S., but the Irish Oaks-winning trainer was straight back in the game with Peter Brant’s Lemista (Ire) (Raven’s Pass) in Sunday’s G2 Kilboy Estate S. Causing an upset when upstaging Saturday’s Classic heroine Even So (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in the G3 Park Express S. over a mile at Naas Mar. 23, the bay had confirmed her class when adding the Listed Victor McCalmont Memorial S. to her tally over an extended nine furlongs at Gowran Park June 19 and fortunately knew nothing of the new expectations racing in these colours for the first time. If Colin Keane was aware of the pressure, he gave little away as he reserved the 3-1 second favourite towards the back before launching her to take control 150 yards from the post. At the line, she had 3/4 of a length to spare over Lovelier (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), with Kiss For a Jewel (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) half a length behind in third.

“There is no question she’s a good filly and she proved that Naas wasn’t a fluke,” Lyons said.”At home she doesn’t show this and nor does the filly yesterday. She wants soft ground and has been doing it on conditions which don’t suit her. I always thought at this stage she’d be running over 12 furlongs and it’s testament to her ability that she is winning this over nine. She has oodles of class and the same sort of profile as Even So and Yaxeni. They are three fillies I’m looking forward to as 4-year-olds. We took the view there was no point in having three in the Oaks yesterday when she had a nice chance today.”
Lyons is looking at Champions Day for his star duo and added, “My advice to her new owners would be that she should stay here and enjoy the fillies’ programme until at least the end of next year, as she will get her conditions here. Even So will probably have a prep after a break and then go for the Ascot race [the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S.] and this filly could go for the same race. At that time of the year the ground could be heavy and this one will handle it as will Yaxeni.”

Lemista’s dam Shortmile Lady (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}) is a half to the G3 Prix de Meautry winner Indian Maiden (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), in turn responsible for the G3 World Trophy winner Maid In India (Ire) (Bated Breath {GB}) and the dual listed scorer and G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis runner-up Love Spirit (GB) (Elusive City). From the family of the Listed Surrey S. winner and G3 Sirenia S.-placed Lake Volta (Ire) also by Raven’s Pass, Lemista descends from All Rainbows (Bold Hour) who produced the GI Kentucky Derby heroine Winning Colors (Caro {Ire}) and is a half-sister to the US Fillies’ Triple Crown-winning champion Chris Evert (Swoon Son). She in turn is the ancestress of the eight-times grade I-winning champion sire Chief’s Crown and the GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Hometown Queen (Pleasant Colony). Shortmile Lady also has the unraced Richard Hannon-trained 2-year-old filly Mummy Bear (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}), a yearling colt by Australia (GB) purchased by JC Bloodstock for 58,000gns at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale and a colt foal by Zoffany (Ire).

Night Of Thunder To Cover Southern Hemisphere Time

Night Of Thunder (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), last year’s champion first-season sire who continues to lead his sire crop, will cover a limited book of mares Southern Hemisphere time at Kildangan Stud later this year.

Night Of Thunder got off to a fast start last year, registering seven stakes winners in his first season with runners. He now has 12 Northern Hemisphere stakes winners, headed thus far this season by the G3 Jersey S. winner Molatham (GB). His seven European 3-year-old black-type winners this season leads all sires on the continent, and his 10.4% clip of stakes winners to runners puts him atop all Northern Hemisphere sires by that metric. While that first crop continues to win at a 55% clip (from runners), his second crop has also hit the ground running; it is currently registering 57% winners to runners and is headed by the ‘TDN Rising Star’ and G2 Coventry S. second Qaader (GB).

Meanwhile, from his lone Australian-conceived crop, Night Of Thunder has sired eight winners and two stakes winners from 16 runners. He is the only first-season sire Down Under this season with more than one stakes winner and his 12.5% clip of stakes winners to runners leads all sires in the nation. All of his Australian winners are rated 80 or higher by Timeform.

Eamon Moloney, nominations manager at Kildangan Stud, said, “The standard that Night Of Thunder’s progeny have achieved in both hemispheres to date are propelling him to an elite stallion status with global appeal. Heart Attack Claims Manduro at 18

Highweight Manduro (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}-Mandellicht {Ire}, by Be My Guest), sustained a fatal heart attack at Haras du Logis on Saturday, Darley announced. The five-time highweight was 18 and stood for €7,000 at Haras du Logis this year. Bred by Rolf Brunner, the half-brother to SW, G1 German Oaks third, and Group 1 producer Mandela (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}) brought €130,000 at the 2003 Baden-Baden September Yearling Sale and would race his entire career in the colours of Baron Georg von Ullmann.

Two-for-two in his juvenile season and named Germany’s champion 2-year-old colt after a win in the 2004 G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten, Manduro won two of his three appearances at three, including the G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit. Transferred from Peter Schiergen to Andre Fabre prior to his 4-year-old bow, the French highweighted older horse that year saluted in the 2006 G2 Prix d’Harcourt and was never worse than third in seven more starts in 2006, five in Group 1 company.

At five, Manduro was the finished article and swept all before him in a five-for-five campaign before injury derailed his Arc bid. Starting off with a win in the G3 Earl of Sefton S., Manduro earned his first Group 1 tally in the G1 Prix d’Ispahan, and claimed the G1 Prince of Wales’s S. and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois in succession. His final victory was back at ParisLongchamp in the G2 Prix Foy before injury forced his retirement with a record of 18-10-3-4 with $1,990,563 in earnings. He was named the French highweighted older horse from 7-9 1/2f and 9 1/2f-11f, as well as the highweighted older horse in England from 9 1/2-11f.

Retired initially to Kildangan Stud in 2008, he stood at Dalham Hall Stud in 2009, before serving three more years in Ireland. The dark bay has been based in France since 2013.

Manduro is credited with three champions, and 35 black-type winners–20 of them at group level. Leading his progeny is three-time Group 1 winner Vazirabad (Fr), with Ribbons (GB), Charity Line (Ire), Mandaean (GB), Ultra (Ire), and Braco Forte (Brz) other top-shelf winners. The last-named is a two-time Group 1 winner in Brazil from Manduro’s single Southern Hemisphere crop during the 2012/13 season. As a broodmare sire, Manduro has seven black-type winners, three group winners and one Group 1 heroine-G1 English 1000 Guineas winner Billesdon Brook (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}).

The Last Lion Gets His First Winner At Hamilton

Becoming the latest freshman sire to get off the mark in Europe, Kildangan Stud-based The Last Lion (Ire) (by Choisir {Aus}), who stands at a fee of €7,500, joined the club at Hamilton on Wednesday. He was represented by the 2-1 favourite Kraken Power (Ire) in the British Stallions Studs EBF Maiden S., where the June 15 Pontefract second struck the front two out and was firmly in command for a three-length dismissal of Abduction (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}).
