Glass Slippers, Shale Gain Breeders’ Cup Berths With Victories At The Curragh

Bearstone Stud Limited's 4-year-old filly Glass Slippers (GB) stormed to success to bring home a British 1-2 in the five-furlong Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes (G1) at the Curragh in Ireland with Keep Busy (IRE) back in second, for trainer John Quinn.

That victory earned Glass Slippers an automatic berth into the $1-million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1).

In the second “Win and You're In” race on the day, Shale (IRE) reversed the form with Pretty Gorgeous (FR) to win the Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) and gain an automatic entry for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) through the international Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge is a series of stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into corresponding races of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, on Nov. 6-7.

Glass Slippers, a bay daughter of Dream Ahead out of the Mind Games (GB) mare Night Gypsy (GB), had found Battaash (IRE) too hot to handle in her two starts so far this season in the King's Stand Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot and the King George Qatar Stakes (G2), but returned to the form that saw her win the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp Longines (G1) in her final start of 2019. Glass Slippers sat just off the early pace before picking up the lead inside the final furlong, and prevailed by a half-length over 18-1 Keep Busy.

Glass Slippers' trainer Kevin Ryan said: “She's so tough and genuine, but she has a lot of class.

“She loves it when they go really quick, but the ground was tacky today so she's done well to cope with that. I'm absolutely delighted. It was Terry Holdcroft's (owner of Bearstone Stud) decision to miss the Nunthorpe and give her a bit more time and he's obviously been vindicated. She's an amazing filly, so simple to train and makes my job very easy. She'll go back for the Abbaye now.”

Glass Slippers (9-2) completed the five furlongs in 1:00.58 over a course listed as good.

Shale earns Group 1 honors in Moyglare Stud Stakes
Later in the day, Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor's Shale (IRE) (9-2) controlled the seven furlongs very strongly to beat her rival Pretty Gorgeous (FR) and win the Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) by three-quarters of a length. This was the third clash between the two fillies this season. Shale had come out on top in the Frank Conroy Silver Flash Stakes (G3), before Pretty Gorgeous exacted her revenge in the A.R.M. Holding Debutante Stakes (G2). Today, though, it was Donnacha O'Brien's 2-year-old who triumphed under Ryan Moore to gain an automatic entry for the $1-million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1).

Shale, a bay daughter of Galileo (IRE) out of the Holy Roman Emperor (IRE) mare Homecoming Queen (IRE), completed the seven furlongs in 1:27.19 over a good course.

It was a successful day for the O'Brien family with father Aidan winning two Group 1 events in France and his two sons Joseph and Donnacha both winning Group 1 races at the Curragh. Donnacha has now won three Group 1s in his first year as a trainer and praised his filly after the race: “It was a very good performance. She has kept progressing throughout the season. She found a lot for pressure and toughed it out. I spoke to Ryan (Moore) after the race and we'll probably look at the Fillies' Mile (G1) (at Newmarket) or the (Prix Marcel) Boussac (G1) (at ParisLongchamp) next.”

First European Black-Type Winner For Pride of Dubai In the Sweet Solera

Allowed to start at 66-1 for Saturday’s G3 Betway Sweet Solera S. at Newmarket, the €3,500 bargain buy Star of Emaraaty (Ire) belied those odds to emerge with the prize and provide her Coolmore-based first-season sire Pride of Dubai (Aus) with a first European black-type winner. Outpaced briefly at halfway having chased the early pace, the chestnut who was fourth in the Listed Star S. over this seven-furlong trip at Sandown July 21 drifted to the centre of the track as she began to enter contention under Kevin Stott. Reeling in the 5-2 co-favourite Dubai Fountain (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) in the final half a furlong, the Ontoawinner syndicate colour-bearer asserted for a 1 1/4-length success, with a neck beck to the 80-1 shot Seattle Rock (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in third. Another of the co-favourites, Fly Miss Helen (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), unfortunately broke down mid-race to add a sad postscript to the race.

Sent to Royal Ascot 13 days after her debut second in a six-furlong Haydock novice contest June 7, Star of Emaraaty was 11th in the five-furlong G2 Queen Mary S. before making all over an extended seven furlongs at Ayr July 13. Tried again following her effort in the Star at Sandown, she was comfortable with the tempo early but needed time to warm up as her peers started to roll approaching the downhill section of the track. Despite her veer away from the pack as she plundered into the “dip”, she was travelling with momentum coming back the other side and there was no hint of fluke at the end of a true test at the distance. “She was 66-1 and I don’t think she should have been that price,” Stott said. “She got a bit unbalanced going into the dip, but saw the trip out well once we met the rising ground. Kevin [Ryan] has always been keen on her and she’s been doing everything right at home, so fair play to her. She’s quite a big filly and has still got a bit of improving to do, so she should be a nice horse for next year.”

Ryan added, “She got very unbalanced at Sandown and there was a risk of it happening again coming to Newmarket, but I thought she would have a fair chance of handling it if he got her down the hill and we knew when she hit the rising ground she would come home well. She is quite a laid-back filly and she will improve with racing.”

Star of Emaraaty, who was offered in the Tattersalls Ascot Online June Sale but was unsold at £115,000, is out of La Grande Elisa (Ad Valorem) who is a half-sister to the recently-deceased triple group 1-winning sire Rip Van Winkle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), as well as the G3 Premio del Piazzale winner La Vie Infinite (Ire) (La Vie Dei Colori {GB}). Rip Van Winkle’s full-sister A Star Is Born (Ire) produced another significant Ballydoyle runner in the listed-winning G1 Middle Park S. runner-up Fleet Review (War Front). Also connected to the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup heroine Danish (Ire) (Danehill) and her full-brother Ace (Ire) who was runner-up in the GI Breeders’ Cup Turf, her yearling filly is by Moohaajim (Ire).

Darvel Earns 200th Tattersalls October Book 1 Bonus

Darvel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who triumphed in the six-furlong Novice S. at Ayr on July 20, became the 200th winner of a £25,000 Tattersalls October Book 1 Bonus, Tattersalls announced on Tuesday. The bonus scheme has now paid out a total of £5,000,000 to owners of yearlings purchased at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1. Of the 200 Book 1 Bonus winners, more than half have been purchased for less than 150,000gns and 31 for 50,000gns or under. Bonus winners include Group 1 winners Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), Fairyland (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), Line of Duty (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

Coolmore-based sire Pride of Dubai (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) became the latest European freshman off the mark when the twice-raced juvenile Star of Emaraaty (Ire) survived a stewards’ enquiry to prevail in Monday’s EBF Stallions Fillies’ Novice Auction S. over an extended seven furlongs at Ayr. In front throughout, the 2-1 second favourite came under ever-increasing pressure inside the final quarter mile and was ridden out in the closing stages to deny Party Spirit (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) by a neck.
