Teofilo’s Wexford Native A New Rising Star At Navan

One of only two unraced 3-year-old colts still holding a 2000 Guineas entry, Jim Bolger's homebred Wexford Native (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) demonstrated why with a taking success at Navan on Tuesday to earn TDN Rising Star status. Drawn widest in 21, the 5-1 shot was keen for Kevin Manning tracking over to eventually shadow Ballydoyle's forward-ridden Sun King (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). As that 7-4 favourite turned the screw in the straight, Wexford Native kept tabs and after edging ahead two out strode out impressively to beat that rival by 2 1/2 lengths. In a maiden with smart formlines, there was another 2 3/4-length margin back to Ceallach (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in third.

Manning was taken by Bolger's first winner of the new season. “It was a tough call to overcome being drawn 21 and get across. I think he has got a big future,” he said. “He was always travelling and getting a tow. When I went to the front, he was just having a look and when I joined Ryan he was just running away a bit from him. He was just very, very green. He has been showing us some nice work at home and he was last year as well, but he was just a big backward horse. I think a mile to a mile and a quarter, he's pretty versatile because he showed plenty of pace to get across from 21.”

Wexford Native's unraced dam Yes Oh Yes (Gone West), who was a $250,000 purchase at the 2008 Keeneland September Sale, is a half to the G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial runner-up and stakes producer Aaroness (Distorted Humor) and to the GIII Boiling Springs S. runner-up Sumba Sunset (Street Cry {Ire}). Under the similarly unraced third dam Lady Lady (Little Current) are a clutch of stakes winners including Grace and Power (More Than Ready), who was runner-up in the GI Hollywood Starlet S. She in turn produced the G1 Darley Classic hero Delectation (Aus) (Shamardal) and is also the second dam of last year's G1 Blue Diamond S. hero Artorius (Aus) (Flying Artie {Aus}) who is bound for Royal Ascot in June. Yes Oh Yes also has a yearling colt by Dawn Approach (Ire).

Manning Suffers Broken Collarbone

Jockey Kevin Manning suffered a broken collarbone in a fall at Galway on Monday. The 54-year-old rider, whose regular mounts this season have included the Classic-winning Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) and Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) for his father-in-law Jim Bolger, sustained the injury when his mount, Dublin Journal (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), slipped up after a furlong of the Galway Handicap. Dublin Journal also races as a homebred for Bolger and his wife, Jackie.

“He's broken his collarbone, but it's a straight-forward break, so it shouldn't be too long,” said his agent Kevin O'Ryan. “Thankfully, everything else is OK.”

‘Improving’ Poetic Flare Can Give Bolger A First Sussex Victory

Jim Bolger has been involved in some iconic Goodwood finishes over the years including Alexander Goldrun's battle with Ouija Board in the 2006 Nassau Stakes and Dawn Approach's duel with Toronado in the 2013 Sussex Stakes. Dawn Approach's son, Poetic Flare, will arrive at Goodwood next week hoping to go one better than his sire and provide the indomitable Jim Bolger with a first success in the Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes on July 28 at Goodwood.

The Sussex is a “Win And You're In” race for the Breeders' Cup Mile this fall at Del Mar.

The County Carlow trainer believes his QIPCO 2000 Guineas hero, who confirmed himself as the leading 3-year-old miler in Europe when demolishing a high-quality field in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, has improved since Ascot.

“Poetic Flare has been very well since the St James's Palace Stakes. We're very happy with his work and he seems to be improving further. I was expecting and hoping for him to win at Ascot but possibly not as spectacularly as he did.”

Bolger has always held the colt in the highest regard and is thrilled that he has showed his quality this season.

“I felt from the Spring of 2020 that he would be our best 2-year-old and as things transpired, he could only partially prove that. I did view him all along as my Guineas horse so it was very pleasing that he could prove that this year.”

Kevin Manning has partnered Poetic Flare in all his starts to date and will once again be riding the horse who Bolger describes as the apple of Manning's eye.

“Kevin Manning loves him! For him, Poetic Flare can do no wrong. He's a very straightforward horse to ride as you can put him anywhere in the race and he always delivers.”

Poetic Flare's two Group 1 victories have come on good-to-firm ground and Bolger believes he is an even better horse on a sound surface.

“He handles soft ground but he's better on good ground. He is very well balanced, so I don't think Goodwood holds any problems for him.”

Poetic Flare has inherited many of Dawn Approach's attributes, but Bolger is hopeful that he can differ from him by going one better in next Wednesday's £1 million Qatar-sponsored contest, which is part of the QIPCO British Champions Series.

“He's a heavyweight in every regard and is over 500kg. He's a very easy horse to manage as he knows his job and he thrives on racing. He has a great appetite for eating and for working, he's just like his sire Dawn Approach in every way.”

“He has one more bit of work to get through and will then arrive at Goodwood on Monday. It's a very special race and a race I've not won before.”

2,000 Guineas Hero Poetic Flare Emulates His Sire With St. James’s Palace Triumph

QIPCO 2000 Guineas hero Poetic Flare was a dominant winner of the G1 St James's Palace Stakes for Ireland, one of the highlights of Royal Ascot's opening day.

The race, restricted to 3-year-olds over the round mile, looked competitive on paper but proved anything but with 54-year-old jockey Kevin Manning and his mount travelling with confidence before clearing away for a four and a quarter length victory.

Trainer Jim Bolger – who bred the son of Dawn Approach – has kept Poetic Flare busy, running in three different 2000 Guineas over a three-week period, but that proved no barrier for the 7/2 favorite.

Lucky Vega (4/1) chased the impressive winner home, with Battleground (11/1) a neck further back in third.

Manning said: “The ground is what this horse needs. You want that good, quick ground and that's what we got today, and he showed how good he is.

“He travelled very well; there was a nice, even pace in the race and always something to aim at. He just travelled so easy into the race, and when I asked him to pick up, he put the race to bed in a matter of strides.

“I couldn't believe that I was travelling so well and was half sitting down rather than having to go forward. He's an unbelievable horse. He's a very tough individual who does himself very well. He has taken his racing very well.

“I don't want to compare him to his sire [Dawn Approach, on whom Manning won the St James's Palace stakes by a short-head in 2013], although if you are going on this race his dad only won by a short-head, not more than four lengths like Poetic Flare, but they are both fantastic horses.

“Riding these good horses is fantastic; it's going well and I'm enjoying life. This place has been a lucky hunting ground for us over the years – we haven't had loads of runners over the years, but the ones we've brought over have all had chances. We have just the one runner this week, and to win is marvelous.”

Speaking to Sky Sports from his home, Bolger said: “I'm very relaxed about it. I have tremendous confidence in this horse and I was expecting him to go and do that. Thanks to all my staff and everybody who has helped.

“We always knew he was hardy from the word go, even when he was being broken in you couldn't keep him quiet. We've bred from the family since the very early 1980s, so a long time. When you have a horse winning the St James's Palace like that you don't really think about all the relatives and the breeding, you wouldn't care if he came to you off the back of a truck as long as you had him.

“This horse is so hardy he's unbelievable, you have to give it to him to keep his back down.”

Una Manning, daughter and assistant to Bolger and wife of jockey Kevin Manning, said: “Dad has always had faith in him. I phoned him after the race and said: 'Well done, you're a legend – gosh he did that well'. He said: 'That's exactly what I was expecting'. It was wonderful, it was fantastic.

“I just had two words from Kevin – he said he's chalk and cheese on the ground. So I think that probably answers our questions about France and our questions about the Curragh.

“I'm so thrilled for my parents because they put so much into it over the years, from the time they started out just the two of them, small business. Look, it's just amazing.

“I just want to say thank you so much to our staff, they've worked extremely hard through very challenging times, and without our staff, we wouldn't be here in this parade ring today.”

She added: “Thank you to everyone who has managed to put on this wonderful show at Ascot today. I'm sure it hasn't been easy.”

Jessica Harrington said of Lucky Vega: “Sadly that is going to be his last run. There will be an announcement as he is going to stand in Australia. I will be sad to lose him as I think he could win a Group One this year easily. He definitely proved today that he stayed the mile and might even get a mile and a quarter.”
