Hard Spun Filly Rockets Home To Become a New ‘Rising Star’

A touch chilly on the board at 9-2 from 5-2 favoritism, Al and Bill Ulwelling's Pennick (f, 2, Hard Spun–By Golly Mis Molly, by Vindication) was pinched back at the break, but saw off her rivals by the time they'd reached the turn and shot clear through the final eighth of a mile to become a new 'TDN Rising Star' at Woodbine Saturday afternoon.

The May-foaled bay, a $200,000 purchase out of last year's Keeneland September Sale, was bounced around just after the start, but was ridden along thereafter by Ramon Hernandez and, without having to be asked unduly, found herself on the lead as the field entered the bend. Shaken up ever so slightly as they hit the stretch, the Ontario-bred quickly put daylight on her competition with an electric turn of foot and was only shown the whip in the final stages, scoring by a strong-through-the-line 5 1/2 lengths in the slick time of :51.22 before striding out powerfully into the turn.

Anderson Farms acquired Pennick's dam for $60,000 in foal to Curlin at the 2014 Keeneland November Sale, and the filly she was carrying at the time became Katie Baby, who just missed on her career debut for her breeder at this venue before later placing in the GIII Hendrie S., the GIII Ontario Matron S. and the GIII Seaway S. Katie Baby's first foal, a Medaglia d'Oro filly, was purchased by Donato Lanni for $170,000 at Keeneland September last fall.

By Golly Mis Molly is a half-sister to 2012 Bison City S. heroine Blue Heart (Exchange Rate)–another KEENOV in utero purchase by Anderson Farms–who went on to produce Grade III placegetter Joyful Kitten (Kitten's Joy); and SW Financial Recovery (Street Cry {Ire}). The filly's third dam was a half-sister to Big Dreams (Great Above), who was responsible for two-time champion Housebuster (Mt. Livermore) as well as GSW & MGISP Quero Quero (Royal Academy).

By Golly Mis Molly is listed as having aborted her 2023 foal by Maxfield. Pennick is the 12th 'Rising Star' for Hard Spun, a number that also includes Anderson Farm graduate Hard Not to Love, who is also out of a mare by Vindication.

Good Magic Son Golden On Debut At Gulfstream

3rd-Gulfstream, $70,000, Msw, 2-11, 3yo, 6f, 1:10.35, ft, 2 3/4 lengths.
GOLD MAGIC (c, 3, Good Magic–Golden Amber, by Gemologist), dismissed on the board at 9-1 in a field of majority first-time starters, tracked off the pace in third as Mr. Peeks (California Chrome) led the field through an opening quarter in :21.91. Still third but just off as the field swung around the bend, he began to move up to take command inside the final eighth of a mile. With the most left late, Gold Magic gained separation close to home to defeat Etnico (Practical Joke) by 2 3/4 lengths. His dam's first foal, the winner now has a yearling half-brother by Maclean's Music while Golden Amber returned to that same stallion for the 2023 season. Sales History: $170,000 Ylg '21 FTKJUL. Moira Confirmed for E.P. Taylor

Moira (Ghostzapper), the dominant winner of this year's Queen's Plate over males, will start Saturday at Woodbine in the GI E.P. Taylor S. It will be her first try against older horses and her first on the turf. Trainer Kevin Attard had also been considering the GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S., a turf race at Keeneland restricted to 3-year-old fillies.

“The race is at home and at a distance of a mile and a quarter,” Attard said. “She had a work over the turf course [five furlongs in 1:01.20] on Saturday and seemed to get over it very well and looked comfortable doing it. Those were the factors that played into it. The Keeneland race was very appealing, but we would have had to ship and put her on a van. She does have some quirks, so we weren't too sure about that because no one knows how she would handle shipping or if there would be any negative impact from that. We thought it be a safer bet to stay at home.”

Moira, who is 4-for-5 lifetime, was an easy winner of the Queen's Plate, the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, beating her fellow Ontario-breds by seven lengths. Attard and the owners, X-Men Racing, Madaket Stablkes LLC and SF Racing LLC, decided afterward to pass on the remaining two legs of the series in order to give their filly a chance of winning a Grade I race. In her lone try in graded company, Moira was second in last year's GIII Mazarine S.

Attard acknowledged that the E.P. Taylor will be a tough spot for his filly.

“She's obviously taking a big step up in class and is facing older horses for the first time,” he said. “There is a bit of a weight advantage.

Being a 3-year-old facing older fillies she will get four pounds. But it's always nice to stick to your own age group if you can. At the end of the day there is no such thing as an easy Grade I.”

All five of the filly's starts have come on the synthetic Tapeta surface at Woodbine. Attard is confident the switch to the grass will not be a problem.

“I think she will handle it,” he said. “Her dam is Devine Aida (Unbridled's Song) and she was a stakes winner on the turf. She has a sibling that was a minor stakes winner on the turf. She's bred to handle the turf and she looked good working over it. The forecast looks good for this week, so it looks like we will get a firm turf course. That's something else we factored into it.”

Depending on how she fares Saturday, Moira could return in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

“That is a possibility,” Attard said. “With the E.P. Taylor being four weeks from the Breeders' Cup versus three weeks for the Queen Elizabeth, that played into our decision as well.”
