Hardy Named Executive Director Of Horse Country

Hallie Hardy has been named executive director of Horse Country, Inc., replacing Anne Sabatino Hardy (unrelated), who has led the nonprofit since its founding in 2015.

“Horse Country is proud to announce Hallie as its new executive director,” explained Gathan Borden, president of the Horse Country board of directors. “She brings not only a necessary skill set and diverse experience, but also sincere enthusiasm for the organization's mission and the desire to continue the growth of this critical fan development initiative. We are grateful to Anne and the foundation of success she leaves behind for Horse Country. The Board looks forward to working with Hallie and our members to build upon that foundation as the organization steps into this next phase.”

Departing executive director, Sabatino Hardy agreed. “I have appreciated the opportunity to be a part of this effort and am grateful for the relationships and shared accomplishments–I can't wait to see what's next,” said Hardy. “Hallie brings a unique set of skills and experiences that make her ideal to lead the organization. Having worked for Horse Country member locations she's seen firsthand the impact experiences have on fan development. Her relationships, vision and passion for the mission will inspire the next phase.”

A native of Frankfort, Hardy held an internship at WinStar Farm while an undergraduate in the University of Kentucky's Equine Program, leading its public and private tours. Following graduation, she joined America's Best Racing (ABR) as one of six brand ambassadors who traveled the country to promote the sport's biggest race days. After ABR, Hardy was accepted to the Irish National Stud Breeding Course and then Godolphin Flying Start.

Since completing Flying Start, Hardy has worked for trainer Graham Motion and again at WinStar Farm. She most recently worked for Godolphin as part of the nomination sales and marketing teams, as well as assisting with several charitable initiatives and Godolphin's tour experience.

Morey, Anderson, Corrales Earn Turfway Park Titles For 2021 December Meet

Trainers William E. Morey and Susan L. Anderson tied for the title at the recently-concluded December meet at Turfway Park, while jockey Gerardo Corrales earned his third straight riding title at the Florence, Ky. track.

Susan L. Anderson is a stakes-winning trainer who has been training since 1987, according to Equibase. During the December meet, Anderson saddled five winners for a 29 percent strike rate. The training title was the cherry on top of Anderson's career year in 2021, with 34 wins and $541,446 in earnings.

William E. Morey is a multiple graded stakes-winning trainer who has been training since 2001. Morey had five wins in December and a 31 percent win rate. Since moving his stable to Kentucky in 2019, Morey has notched two titles at Turfway, in December of both 2020 and 2021. Morey also finished second to trainer Wesley Ward during the 2021 winter meet which lasted from January through early April. 

Gerardo Corrales began riding in the US in 2015. Corrales finished the December meet with 23 wins, 12 ahead of Rafael Bejarano. The December 2021 meet marks Corrales' third consecutive title at Turfway Park: he received the title for December 2020, the 2021 winter meet, and now December of 2021. The best year of Corrales' career thus far came in 2019, when he earned his first jockey title at Jack Thistledown Racino, won 192 races and earned $3,735,371.

Help Wanted: KEEP Helping Kentucky Farms With Strategies To Improve Employee Retention In A Tough Labor Market

The signs are everywhere, and it's no longer just “Help Wanted” hanging in the windows. A “Closed due to lack of staff” sign has become an increasingly common sight at local restaurants and retail stores as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the labor market.

The equine industry has faced this issue for years, and the pandemic has only made it worse. Whether workers are available or not, however, the horses' needs remain the same.

Labor shortages are addressed in any number of ways, but most focus on building the pool of potential employees. In the equine industry, that has included efforts like the NTRA's lobby to increase labor visa caps and grassroots programs to improve working conditions on the backstretch.

Kentucky, meanwhile, has also embraced the exact opposite strategy: working with employers to address how to improve targeting and job conditions for potential employees. It has led to ideas like experimenting with schedule flexibility in order to improve employee retention, as well as a growing awareness of the need for upward mobility within the industry.

The strategy evolved as the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce was working with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on a new project that centered on understanding employers' needs first, and working backward from there. Kentucky is one of three states that adopted the program on a statewide level, focusing on high-demand industries like healthcare, manufacturing, and transportation.

In the midst of that implementation, the Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP) came forward to join the project: Laurie Mays was hired as the Equine Talent Pipeline Project Manager.

“I'm a facilitator; it's a heavily employer-led initiative,” Mays explained. “I connect a lot of dots, but it's what the employers want to tackle. We help from a business and a project management aspect of that.”

Mays began by creating several different collaboratives, one of which involved Thoroughbred farms–ranging from family-owned to the Godolphins of the world–taking a hard look at their own assumptions about recruitment strategies. 

“A lot of the equine employers do a lot within the equine business realm, but not a lot in the greater business world in terms of learning from and understanding different things from other types of businesses,” said Mays. “They weren't in tune with local career centers, extension offices, etc. – and thus they were missing those opportunities. 

“So many workforce struggles are the same, irrespective of industry, and we can learn a lot from each other. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel, but to create more of a power in numbers type of thing.

“I think I've pushed a lot of them out of their comfort zone, outside of the equine silo. The greater business world needs to know that the equine industry is there, that they have a lot of infiltration into a lot of these other industries.”

Scheduling

One of the biggest things Mays heard at the beginning of the project was that employees were leaving due to a lack of flexibility in their schedules. The idea of moving to a five-day work week, as opposed to six, was floated, but it was not immediately popular.

Most farms said that it was not financially feasible to add enough staff to switch to a five-day work week. Mays worked with them in an exercise to compare the cost of switching to the five-day week versus the turnover cost of having to train new employees.

“Out of the 11 facilities that did that exercise, all actually fared better financially if they went to the five-day work week,” said Mays. “A lot of them said, 'I just assumed that it was more expensive,' but they had never taken paper-to-pencil to actually figure it out.”

A couple farms piloted a five-day work week program, and did, in fact, find that staff stayed longer with the option for a more flexible schedule. One farm in particular increased wages with a rotating calendar schedule. The farm wound up paying individuals less overall, but employees were able to have two consecutive days off which rotated – every 5 weeks they had a complete weekend off.

“Obviously we've had some pushback discussion with some farms,” Mays said. “Several people said, 'Well, if the employees aren't passionate about wanting to work in this industry, then they need to go somewhere else.' Well, they are.

“In my opinion, the five-day work week will not be an option that they can ignore for much longer, but it's a culture shift. I tell them: 'The way you've done it is not working, so we need to think outside the box.' We've had some great progressive farms, and when it works for them other farms will try it, but it's not been an easy sell.”

How Many?

Since the equine industry is based heavily on relationships and word of mouth information transfer, there isn't a good handle on agriculture data because the state has never had to collect it before.

The Thoroughbred Farm Collaborative worked to develop a data collection project to obtain concrete data detailing the state of the Thoroughbred industry workforce. 

“We want to dial down to what their needs are: how many people do they need, and why are they losing them?” Mays said. “We need to get past any assumptions that the employers may have.”

The data collected from the survey, which is currently in the process of being analyzed, will form an industry baseline to enhance existing projects and identify new programs and needed implementation of initiatives. It will help the collaborative determine where to focus additional resources: whether that be involvement in K-12 school systems, community colleges, vocational training programs, or even the department of corrections, the foster care system, people coming out of recovery, etc.

Upward Mobility

The Thoroughbred Farm Collaborative also recognized the need to understand the wishes and concerns of their staff to assist with recruitment and elevate their facilities. The collaborative formed a subcommittee committed to researching, understanding, creating, and implementing a farm management leadership program based on employee feedback. 

The long-term goal is to educate and support upper management to ensure they are good leaders, helping create a positive workplace culture, and allowing better places to work for the populations coming through newly formed pipelines within the industry.

One popular topic has been the massive number of students that come out of four-year equine-specific programs each year, because those students are not typically interested in filling the positions the farms desperately need. 

“We are working to facilitate open conversations between employers and educators, trying to solve this issue from both sides,” said Mays. “Obviously it's a slow process for that, and the mindset of “what is education” has to change. It used to be that experience/time in was valued above all, but we have to start realizing that people that have gone through a four-year degree may not have the experience, but their catch-up time is much, much quicker. 

“That's not been the way that farms have recognized experience in the past. Part of it is also that the industry 100 percent understands that they have not done a good job in creating and maintaining career pathways. As employers, they don't do a good job of helping them to move forward – not out of a mindset that they don't want them to, they're just not used to it. The reality is that the majority of people are not going to remain entry-level grooms for 30 years.”

To that end, the various collaboratives have worked to develop career-pathway documents, split into different industry sectors. They begin at entry-level positions, detailing average annual salary, education or on-the-job experience required, etc.

“At the end of the day, we can't just rely on passion for the job, because the equine industry is competing for the same people as all these other industries,” Mays said. “You have to be a competitive employer: you're not hiring a groom, you're hiring a future division manager.

“It's really hard to grasp, because we've become so desperate to hold onto the people that we have. I try to use this as an example: we have implemented a training program for grooms to get their Commercial Driving Licenses. Yes, the farm may lose a groom, but then that person is a very experienced person who is then transporting your horses. At the same time, that's a great recruiting tool for you, because the grooms have an opportunity to learn and progress to a higher-paying job. Turnover isn't as scary if it's planned.”

Two Parts To The Equation

It is also important to educate future employees about the opportunities in the equine industry. 

To that end, KEEP brought Annise Montplaisir into the fold. Her co-developed grassroots initiative Amplify Horse Racing has, since 2019, been working to fulfill its mission to provide an entry point to the Thoroughbred industry for youth and young adults.

Montplaisir's position with KEEP as the Equine Education Coordinator complements both that and Mays' position, helping to bridge the gap between employers and potential employees. Amplify sponsors monthly virtual seminars about different industry careers, a podcast along those same lines, free educational tours focusing on careers and understanding what goes into the industry, and a developed mentorship program for young adults.

“Amplify showcases job progression and industry pathways to newcomers through our virtual and in-person programming, which enlists the help of existing industry professionals to speak about their current careers and the job pathways they took to reach that point,” Montplaisir said. “Additionally, one of our goals with the mentorship program is for mentors to discuss career pathways with mentees and help them develop an understanding of the current working environment, hours and pay in the industry. 

“On the flip side, we also invite mentees to share their expectations for the kind of working environment, pay and upward mobility they want and need from a job. Hopefully that kind of dialogue will be helpful to employers and encourage more innovation within the industry.”

Next Steps?

Due in large part to Mays' and Montplaisir's work, the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce has recognized the vital role played by the state's equine industry over the past three years. Mays has since been made a full-time employee of the CoC, as opposed to KEEP, showing that the state government understands the value of continuing her work within one of its signature industries.

“This initiative has been around for three years, and it has grown a lot,” said Mays. “However, there are still a lot of farms that don't know what we're doing, or maybe are skeptical of what we're doing.

“Word of mouth is really what spreads it around. We have an open-door policy for any farm that wants to be involved, and getting buy-in from the farms really comes from each other.”

Thoroughbred Community Raises Tornado Relief Funds

LEXINGTON, KY–Kentuckians across the Commonwealth woke up with a text on Saturday morning: 'Are you okay?' For most, it was an uneventful night aside from perhaps being awakened once or twice to the sound of high winds. But for some, unimaginable destruction and immeasurable damage occurred overnight as a catastrophic tornado hit western Kentucky.

As of Friday, 77 Kentuckians have lost their lives due to a storm that is expected to have affected an estimated 227 miles, according to WLKY News.

Bradley Boyd, a professional Quarter Horse trainer based in Princeton, Kentucky, sent his children to the basement Friday evening when he heard news of the approaching tornado.

“The tornado passed about a mile behind our place,” the horseman recounted. “I watched it pass at 10:21 that evening; I'll always remember the time. By 10:40, I'd had a phone call from one of my best friends. It had killed three of his horses and his place was just gone.”

As Americans awoke the next morning to news of the devastation, Boyd drove to what was left of his friend's farm.

“By the time I got there, they had caught their horses so we just went digging stuff out of their house,” he said. “It's heartbreaking to see people who build and build and have it all taken at one time. It's heartbreaking. But to watch the horse community come together since this has happened, it has been incredible. It's one of my favorite things about the horse community is that when it comes to these horses, everyone steps up.”

It didn't take long for the Thoroughbred community to jump into action. On Sunday, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association launched a GoFundMe page to aid in the relief efforts, kicking the fund off with a $7,500 contribution.

“It's something that the Thoroughbred industry has done in the past, most recently this February when there was some major flooding in Southeast Kentucky, ” said KTA Executive Director Chauncey Morris.  “We have a bit of experience not only in raising funds, but in figuring out what exactly to do with them when emergency strikes.”

As funds started to pour in, Morris got in touch with Don Campbell, a Thoroughbred trainer from Princeton and the next-door neighbor to Bradley Boyd, to find out what the immediate needs were for horse owners and farms in the area.

“Our farm didn't really have any damage,” said Campbell. “You can't even count it compared to what other people have. Most of the people who got hit lost everything–houses, barns, fencing, all their supplies, trailers, cars. It wasn't a typical Kentucky tornado where something gets torn up and something else gets left behind. It was more like if you were in the path of it, you just got wiped out. You can see the pictures, but it's nothing like it is in person. It's like a war zone. ”

Chauncey, Campbell and Boyd arranged to open up Boyd Performance Horses as a supply distribution center.

“Chauncey had told us to be ready because  they were going to send a bunch our way,” Boyd said. “I told them to bring it on and that we would make it happen one way or another.”

Since Tuesday, the KTA has organized shipments of hay, grain, water hoses, dog food, fencing and various supplies, working with agricultural centers in the area to help distribute incoming supplies to surrounding communities.

“The ag centers are sending people here to come pick things up and everyone is just overwhelmed with how much support we're getting,” Campbell said. “But still, we're getting more calls than we have stuff. I had 40 buckets sitting in a barn that I had kept over the years. I took them over to the distribution center and they were gone after an hour.”

“Just today alone, we've probably sent out almost 20,000 pounds of feed between hay and grain,” Boyd said on Thursday. “We're glad to be able to help in any way we can, but without Donn and the KTA, we wouldn't be able to do any of this right now.”

“We just heard that a semi-load of treated fence posts will be here on Monday,” Campbell said. “Chauncey has been ringing my phone off the wall to see what our needs are. I'm not talking about them sending a few pickup loads. Everything they're wanting to do is with semis. The way the Thoroughbred industry has stepped up has been unbelievable. That's the best way for me to put it and I'm proud to be a part of it.”

While the KTA will continue to provide necessary supplies for farms in western Kentucky, they are also beginning to look towards the future to determine how to best allocate their growing funds as the rebuilding process begins.

“We're taking care of immediate needs now, but for the medium and long term, we know that historically, federal disaster relief doesn't always pay for everything and some people fall through the cracks,” Morris said. “FEMA and SBA programs do not generally pay for people who are renting their apartments, homes or trailers. So that's where hopefully we can come in and help.”

Morris explained that the custodian for the funds raised through their GoFundMe will be the Foundation for Appalachia Kentucky. The Hazard-based organization is the same group the KTA worked with when they raised money for flood relief earlier this year and the program has already partnered with another organization in Paducah called the Community Foundation of West Kentucky.

“The scale of this disaster is so big and our industry generally has a very big heart,” Morris said. “Here in Kentucky, it's not lost on anyone just how good things are in the Thoroughbred business since the HHR bill was passed. We have a lot to be grateful for and this is our way of being good citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.”

The KTA's GoFundMe has received major donations from outlets including The Jockey Club,  Juddmonte Farms, Stonestreet Farm, Godolphin and Lane's End. Spendthrift Farm gave what is currently the largest contribution with a $100,000 donation.

“This is a terrible tragedy and our donation represents our entire farm and our dedication to our brothers and sisters in need,” said the farm's owner Eric Gustavson. “We so appreciate the KTA, UK and every other organization that has stepped up to serve.”

Claiborne Farm also contributed to the relief fund.

“It's awesome to see the Thoroughbred business come together and raise so much money for those whose lives have been turned upside down,” Claiborne President Walker Hancock said. “In times of need, we are quick to lend a hand, which makes me so proud to be a part of this wonderful business.”

Hancock was featured on a local news outlet this week after discovering a family photo in one of the farm's paddocks on Saturday morning and suspecting that it might have come from an area affected by the tornado.

“I saw some mares sniffing it, I thought it might be a piece of trash I didn't want them to ingest so I jumped the fence and grabbed it and sure enough it happened to be this picture,” Hancock told WKYT on Wednesday.

Relatives of the two children in the photograph saw the story run on WKYT and notified the family, who lives over 100 miles away from Claiborne in Campbellsville, Kentucky.

 

Another high-profile stud farm in Lexington has helped raise awareness for the KTA relief fund as Coolmore's Ashford Stud auctioned off a 2022 season to Triple Crown winner Justify with the proceeds benefitting the fund. The bidding was announced on Monday and closed on Friday, with a winning bid of $95,000 from Craig Bernick. Additional bidders included Ken Donworth, Dennis Drazin and Bobby Rankin.

Coolmore will be making an additional donation along with the proceeds raised from the Justify season.

“One of the greatest things about this business is that even though we are competitors in certain aspects, when times are tough and the need is there, the horse business shows great solidarity,” said Coolmore's Adrian Wallace. “It's great to see farms, veterinary practices, breeders and trainers come together to help out. Western Kentucky has been very good to the horse business and it's time that we show our appreciation and help out where we can. Even though it won't bring these lives back, hopefully it will help ease the suffering that a lot of these people are going through.”

Other racing organization have also stepped up in the past week. Breeders' Cup donated $50,000 to disaster relief efforts, splitting the donation evenly between the KTA fund and the University of Kentucky's “Kentucky United for Tornado Relief” telethon, and the Kentucky HBPA donated $25,000 to the Team Western Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund organized by Governor Andy Beshear's office.

Several fundraising events have been organized by Lexington's equine community and will be happening in the coming weeks.

Multiple equine-related groups including the Kentucky Horse Council have joined forces to organize a supply drive for equine-specific needs. Donations including buckets, winter blankets, halters, lead ropes, wheelbarrows and water hoses can be dropped off at the Kentucky Horse Park's Alltech Arena from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 18 – 20. On Sunday, Jan. 2, Frank & Dino's restaurant in downtown Lexington will serve complimentary food and drinks from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the families in Mayfield, Kentucky affected by the tornado.
