Pretty Mischievous Drills Towards Acorn

'TDN Rising Star' Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief), last-start winner of the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks May 5, breezed a half-mile in :47.87 over the Belmont main track at 6:45 Saturday morning in advance of a start in Friday's GI Acorn S. at Belmont Park. The Godolphin homebred worked in the company of the dual graded-stakes placed Gilmore (Twirling Candy), who is expected for Saturday's GI Woody Stephens S. on the Belmont S. undercard.

Trainer Brendan Walsh was duly pleased with his filly's final serious piece of work.

“That's typical of her,” Walsh commented. “I think she even went :47 4/5 in her work before the Oaks as well. She's been doing well since then. Everything seems spot on for her.”

The Acorn will be contested over a one-turn 8 1/2 furlongs for the first time this year, having been lengthened from a mile, and Walsh is not concerned about the cutback to one bend.

“I don't think it'll be a problem at all,” Walsh said. “It should work out well for her. She has plenty of natural speed, which is required in this type of race.”

Gilmore was runner-up in the GIII Bay Shore S. at Aqueduct Apr. 8 and cuts back to a sprint off a sound third in the GII Pat Day Mile at Churchill May 6.

“I thought he worked great, too. That was a great work for him,” Walsh said. “He's not the most generous worker in the morning, but he worked fine. I didn't want him to go head-to-head with her because I thought they would have gone too fast.”

Stephen Foster Preview Day Headlines Saturday’s Graded Action

Lucky Seven Stable's Rattle N Roll (Connect), winner of this term's GIII Ben Ali S. Apr. 22 and GIII Pimlico Special S. May 19, is the horse to beat returning on short notice in Saturday's GIII Blame S., the featured race on “Stephen Foster Preview Day” at Churchill Downs. The $1-million GI Stephen Foster will now be held four weeks later at Ellis Park.

The Ken McPeek-trained 2021 GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity winner will face seven rivals from his rail draw, including the re-opposing Ben Ali second and third-place finishers Call Me Fast (Dialed In) and Pioneer of Medina (Pioneerof the Nile); and grassy MGISW Santin (Distorted Humor), who makes his first career start on dirt.

The 11-race Churchill Downs program also includes: the GIII Arlington S., led by 8-5 morning-line favorite and MGSW 7-year-old gelding Set Piece (GB) (Dansili {GB}); the GIII Shawnee S., featuring the streaking Frost Point (Frosted) and GISW Pauline's Pearl (Tapit); a field of six 3-year-old fillies in the grassy GIII Regret S.; the return of last out G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen winner Sibelius (Not This Time) in the $225,000 Aristides S.; and the $225,000 Audubon S. for 3-year-olds on grass.

Silver Knott (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and 'TDN Rising Star' Far Bridge (English Channel), meanwhile, figure to vie for favoritism in Belmont's GII Pennine Ridge S. The former, 11th in the G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas May 6, came within a nose as the favorite in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland Nov. 4. Far Bridge suffered his first career defeat falling just a nose short while making his stakes debut in the GII American Turf S. on the GI Kentucky Derby undercard.

The Alys Look (Connect), a respectable third at 30-1 for trainer Brad Cox in the GI Kentucky Oaks, makes her first start for Chris Davis in the GII Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita. The Ike and Dawn Thrash colorbearer faces six rivals, including GII Santa Anita Oaks second and third-place finishers And Tell Me Nolies (Arrogate) and Window Shopping (American Pharoah); and last-out seven-furlong optional claiming winners Anywho (Bolt d'Oro) and Doinitthehardway (Street Sense).

A pair of graded stakes will also take place at Woodbine–the GIII Belle Mahone S., highlighted by the return of Canadian Horse of the Year and Queen's Plate S. heroine Moira (Ghostzapper); and a field of 11 for the GII Royal North S.

All Post-Race Samples for Derby and Oaks Cleared

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) has received the post-race sample results from the runners in the May 6 GI Kentucky Derby and May 5 GI Kentucky Oaks, according to Kristin Voskuhl, a spokesperson for the Public Protection Cabinet, which oversees the KHRC. All samples have been cleared, as indicated by the laboratory results from the University of Kentucky.

The Derby had 18 runners and was won by Mage (Good Magic), while the Oaks, won by Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief), had 14 total runners.

More Than $1 Million in Breakage Returned to Winning Bettors Across Oaks and Derby Days

Winning horseplayers at Churchill Downs and around the world betting into the pools across Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby days enjoyed more than an additional $1 million in winnings thanks to an amendment to Kentucky law which now rounds winning bets to the penny.

The practice, known as breakage, has been in effect across all of American racing, relatively unchanged, for more than a century. But Kentucky's legislature passed an amendment to existing laws in March 2022. The measure took effect in July of last year, making Saturday's Kentucky Derby won by Mage the first in modern history to pay winning bettors to the penny.

Mage returned $32.42 to win, $14.58 to place and $9.08 to show for every $2 bet.

A $100 place bet on Mage this year returned bettors an additional $9 in 2023 compared to what would have been paid to them under the old breakage calculation.

For the Derby itself, more than an additional $318,000 was paid back from just the win, place and show pools thanks to penny breakage. The total amount across all pools is even higher. Traditionally, winnings have been rounded down to the dime and that amount was retained by bet-takers, either on-track or by account wagering operators.

“This amended law puts the entirety of a winning bet back in the hands and accounts of horseplayers, where it has always belonged,” said Patrick Cummings, executive director of the Thoroughbred Idea Foundation, which first advocated for the shift to penny breakage in a 2018 white paper.

“Breakage has skimmed billions of dollars off the top of winnings that should have been paid to horseplayers. Decades ago, it might have been slightly more understandable why such a law existed, but not today, and Kentucky's legislators recognized that and made a meaningful change that will benefit those that support racing through wagering.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, total wagering on the 2023 Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby days were both record highs, as was all wagering across the entirety of Derby week.

“Breaking to the penny, enabling customers to churn those additional winnings ,undoubtedly played a role, no matter how small it might seem. Kentucky's continued success should serve as an example for other states, tracks and horsemen to advocate for penny breakage, following Kentucky's lead.”
