Equine-Specific Donations to Be Accepted at Kentucky Horse Park

Multiple equine organizations in Kentucky have joined forces to assist horse owners who have been affected by last week's tornado outbreak. Equine and ag-specific donations will be accepted at the Kentucky Horse Park Dec. 18-20, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Signage will point donors to the exact location behind the Alltech Arena.

Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) employees and the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment extension agents have been working diligently to create county-specific lists of items that are needed immediately. Though cleanup efforts will be ongoing, the most-needed equine items requested include buckets, winter blankets, halters, lead ropes, wheelbarrows, plastic totes, grooming supplies, water hoses, hay bags, wheelbarrows, muck tubs, pitchforks, shovels and first-aid supplies. Donations will be accepted in the North Exhibit Hall of the Alltech Arena: Kentucky Horse Park 4089 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY 40511. Follow signs for Kentucky Horse Council. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Donations will begin being delivered to specific counties on Tuesday.

American Eventing Championships Return To Kentucky Horse Park For 2023, 2024

The United States Eventing Association (USEA) Board of Governors have voted to enter into contract negotiations with Equestrian Events Inc. (EEI) and Mary Fike to host the 2023 and 2024 USEA American Eventing Championships (AEC) at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky.

The USEA sent out a request for expressions of interest in June 2021 to host the AEC in 2023 and 2024. Several venues presented attractive proposals, and from those the USEA Board of Governors voted to select the Kentucky Horse Park as the 2023 and 2024 host site pending contract negotiations. The USEA has begun negotiating final terms with the organizing group of EEI and Mary Fike for the 2023 and 2024 AEC and hopes to complete that process within the next few months.

The 2022 AEC will be held at Rebecca Farm in Kalispell, Montana from Aug. 30 – Sept. 4, 2022. The proposed date for the 2023 AEC in Kentucky is Aug. 29 – Sept. 3, 2023, followed by the 2024 AEC from Aug. 27 – Sept. 1, 2024.

“EEI and Mary Fike are excited to partner with the USEA and welcome the AEC back to Kentucky in 2023 and 2024. The Kentucky Horse Park is a special place and hosting the AEC at this iconic venue creates memories that will last a lifetime. We are beyond thrilled to host this championship and the amazing competitors who will attend,” said EEI Executive Director Lee Carter.

Among the interested venues for the 2023 and 2024 AEC, there was a strong bid from Stable View in Aiken, South Carolina. Ultimately, the Board made it clear through its deliberations that the popularity of the Kentucky Horse Park and their trust in the management team of EEI and Mary Fike were central to their decision. EEI and Mary Fike first organized the AEC at the Kentucky Horse Park in 2019, which recorded 925 starters making it the largest event in North American history. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 AEC was canceled but the event returned to the Kentucky Horse Park in 2021. The 2021 AEC garnered over 1,200 entries and ran 939 starters, which broke the 2019 record as the largest event in North American history.

“We are truly elated for the AEC to return to the Kentucky Horse Park,” said USEA CEO Rob Burk. “Our partners at EEI and Mary Fike have developed a strong working connection with our staff over the previous three years. The USEA Board of Governors had a difficult decision to make and I want to thank all of our bidders including Barry Olliff, Molly Bull, and the entire team from Stable View. We received an overwhelming amount of feedback from the membership about their desire to return the AEC to Kentucky, and we are happy to deliver this news to the USEA members.”

The Kentucky Horse Park maintains 600 acres of cross-country courses, 1,200 permanent stalls with accessibility to additional temporary stalls, and world-class arenas including the iconic Rolex Stadium. The Kentucky Horse Park was home to the 2010 World Equestrian Games and hosts the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event every year in April, which is also organized by EEI.

The Friday Show Presented By Monmouth Park: Talking Thoroughbred Makeover

Just as there are “baby” races at the track, off-track Thoroughbreds have their own kind of competition restricted to newcomers — the Thoroughbred Makeover, scheduled for Oct. 12-17 at the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington, Ky.

The event, offering $100,000 in prize money and consisting of 10 different disciplines, brings together Thoroughbreds that are in their first year transitioning from the racetrack to a second career.

Jonathan Horowitz, who calls the races at Colorado's Arapahoe Park, has been the announcer at the Thoroughbred Makeover since 2015. Since January 2020, he's been documenting his new avocation in a series of articles at the Paulick Report, “Horowitz On OTTBs,” highlighting the challenges and triumphs that come with working with off-track Thoroughbreds.

“I appreciate that it's not easy to do,” said Horowitz, who joins publisher Ray Paulick and editor in chief Natalie Voss on this week's Friday Show. “I appreciate that when you get it, it's one of the most rewarding feelings. It's a sport where … imagine if you're a basketball player and the basketball had a mind of its own.”

While Horowitz will not be competing at this year's Thoroughbred Makeover, Voss will be in the dressage ring at the Horse Park with her off-track Thoroughbred, Underscore (fondly known as Blueberry around the barn). She's a tireless advocate for giving ex-racehorses the best chance possible for a second career that can be just as rewarding for the horse as a trip to the winner's circle.

Tickets On Sale For EQUITANA USA At The Kentucky Horse Park October 1-3

EQUITANA USA, the premier horse industry event, is one month away! Gates open at the Kentucky Horse Park Friday Oct. 1 for the three-day event. It welcomes all riding levels, disciplines, and breeds, as well as enthusiasts of all ages to come together to celebrate the horse.

Tickets may be purchased in advance online by visiting equitanausa.com and start at $27 (ages 13+), $10 (ages 6-12), and free for children five and under. Advance ticket holders will avoid registration waits to enter upon arrival. Tickets include on-site parking, free United States Equestrian Federation fan membership and admission into the Kentucky Horse Park, which includes access to the International Museum of the Horse, American Saddlebred Museum and Hall of Champions. EQUUS Evolution evening event tickets start at $30 for value seating.

Programming for the 2021 edition was announced last month and is filled with everything from celebrity and industry notable appearances to horse exhibitions and kid-centric events. It is the first in-person, North American iteration of the world's largest equine trade show in over a decade.

The list of celebrities appearing or presenting at EQUITANA USA includes former Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear, an active rider and horse enthusiast who is serving as the official spokesperson for the event. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy alum Carson Kresley, an American Saddlebred owner and exhibitor, is also scheduled to appear.

Other industry notables expected at EQUITANA USA this year include Nic Roldan, top U.S. polo player; Dressage Grand Prix rider and trainer Micah Deligdish; notable coach and educator Colton Woods; and natural horsemanship trainer Pat Parelli.

The Friday (Oct. 1) schedule of events kicks off with a two-day eventing clinic with U.S. Olympic equestrian Phillip Dutton, who is hot off his jumping final appearance at the 2020 Tokyo Games. Other clinics offered include sessions with 2016 Dressage Olympic Bronze Medalist Laura Graves, competitive show jumper and social media sensation Ronny Riemer and body work expert Jim Masterson.

Panels and roundtable topics include sessions on improving accessibility to equine activities for minority populations, connecting self-care with horse care, horsemanship, sustainability, and the social responsibility of industry influencers, among others.

EQUITANA USA's special events for 2021 feature a masterclass from the Retired Racehorse Project, a Jump Chute Exhibition from Spy Coast Farm, a Max Corcoran Horsemanship Seminar presented by USEA and the Horseless Horse Show presented by USHJA.

Family fun will be had with kid-specific content like horse painting with Breyer, a bouncy horse bash presented by the EQUUS Foundation and a meet the horses and ownership seminar with Rising Starr Rescue.

The day events are also followed each evening with the premier equine theatrical production EQUUS Evolution. It takes place in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park and is sure to be the highlight of the event's family experience.
