Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance To Host Broodmare Nutrition Webinar

The Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance (ITA), in conjunction with Kentucky Equine Research (KER), will be hosting a free webinar focusing on broodmare nutrition on Thursday, February 4, starting at 7 p.m. EST.

The webinar will focus on proper nutrition practices for breeders and farm managers for all stages of the broodmare's reproductive cycle—from pre-conception through gestation and late gestation to nursing. The information will be presented by Peter Huntington BVSc, MACVSc, an external lecturer and examiner at the University of Melbourne Veterinary Science program and Director of Equine Nutrition for Kentucky Equine Research Australasia.

“A lot of stars need to be aligned to both achieve pregnancy and maintain it. Horses are notoriously challenging to routinely breed successfully compared to many other mammals, with foaling rates of only about 60 to 70 percent,” explains Dr. Huntington. “In addition to feeding high-quality, forage-based diets to achieve and maintain an appropriate body condition score, micronutrient balance, especially the trace minerals copper, zinc and selenium, and nutritional supplements also need to be considered.”

The webinar is open to anyone looking to continue their education and provide the best care for their broodmares. Pre-registration is required for access to the Zoom webinar or the livestream on ITA's Facebook page.

“We are excited to partner with Kentucky Equine Research to provide more education for Indiana breeders and owners,” says Crystal Chapple, DVM, president of ITA. “This is what this group is dedicated to do—educate and encourage breeding and racing of Thoroughbreds in Indiana. We are thankful that Kentucky Equine Research is willing to work with us on this mission.”

You can RSVP for the webinar by emailing Indythoroughbred.social@gmail.com or by clicking on the event on the ITA Facebook page.

Triple Crown News Minute Presented By Kentucky Equine Research: Betting Against Baffert?

The rescheduled Triple Crown season of 2020 draws to a close with Saturday's Grade 1 Preakness Stakes from Baltimore's Pimlico Race Course, and while it has been a year like no other, there is one factor that has brought some normalcy to the event: the presence of Hall of Famer and seven-time Preakness winner Bob Baffert.

Baffert is five-for-five in the Preakness with winners of the G1 Kentucky Derby and he brings morning-line favorite Authentic to Old Hilltop off his upset of Tiz the Law in the Sept. 5 Run for the Roses. For good measure, Baffert also will tighten the girth (or at least attempt to) on Thousand Words, the colt who was scratched from the Derby after flipping in the saddling paddock at Churchill Downs.

In this final edition of the 2020 Triple Crown News Minute, Ray Paulick and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth assess the current crop of 3-year-olds relative to the older horse division that they will soon be taking on at the Breeders' Cup world championships Nov. 7 at Keeneland. And, of course, they also make their selections for the Preakness Stakes and explain why they are going against the grain and not picking one of the Baffert runners.

Triple Crown News Minute Presented By Kentucky Equine Research: An Authentic Haskell?

While Bob Baffert has won the Grade 1 TVG.com Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., a record eight times, it's been five years since the Hall of Fame trainer last captured the Jersey Shore track's biggest race, taking the 2015 renewal with Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

Baffert is represented again this year by Authentic, the multiple graded stakes winning Into Mischief colt who comes out of a second-place finish to Honor A. P. in the G1 Santa Anita Derby on June 6.

Not only does the Haskell carry a $1-million purse, it's a Win and You're In Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race, offers 100-40-20-10 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the top four finishers, and kicks off the BetMakers Bonanza, a potential $1-million bonus to any horse that wins the Haskell, Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic.

In this latest edition of the Triple Crown News Minute, Ray Paulick and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth review last Saturday's G2 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes win by Art Collector at Keeneland and preview the leading contenders taking on Authentic in the Haskell, including Dr Post, most recently second to division leader Tiz the Law in the G1 Belmont Stakes. The Todd Pletcher trainee will be ridden by “Jersey Joe” Bravo, 13-time leading jockey at Monmouth Park.
