Longshot Look Presented By Kentucky Downs: Ringing Up A Big Price

Monday's Labor Day card during the FanDuel meet at Kentucky Downs brings with it another chance to play America's richest meet, and the Paulick Report is back with another Longshot Look video segment.

For each card of the six-day meet, J.D. Fox of the Champagne and J.D. Show will single out a price play with his reasoning for what makes the horse worth a look when they might go overlooked.

On Monday's card, Fox has his eye on a runner in Race 9, the Aristocrat Juvenile Fillies Stakes, going a mile over Kentucky Downs' unique turf course. His pick will be making a surface switch after winning on debut over the dirt at Ellis Park, which means the filly could offer value at 12-to-1.

Kentucky Downs' 2021 meet takes place Sept. 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, and 12. First post each day is at 12:20 p.m. Central.

Accredit Scores Upset With Gate-To-Wire Win In Dueling Grounds Derby

It was a day to be on the lead at Kentucky Downs, as another front runner came home the winner at the Franklin, Ky., track. Adventuring had won in near gate to wire fashion the race before, with Accredit doing much the same in the 1 5/16-mile Dueling Grounds Derby.

Breaking from post one, jockey Martin Garcia hustled Accredit to the lead, the field of ten other 3-year-old colts and geldings strung out behind him through the early part of the race. Behind him, Modern Science took up second with Yes This Time and Hillard rounding out the top four. Accredit controlled the pace throughout, setting fractions of :24.17, :49.03, and 1:14.31 over the first six furlongs. By the time the field reached the final bend, Accredit was three lengths in front.

Into the long Kentucky Downs stretch, the easy early pace allowed Accredit to hang on to front runner status, as Modern Science and Cellist made a run at him early in the straight. The son of Flatter had plenty in reserve, holding off those challengers and then a surging Yes This Time in the final sixteenth to win the Dueling Grounds Derby by a length. Yes This Time, Cellist, and Modern Science rounded out the top four.

The final time for the 1 5/16-miles was 2:10.58. Find this race's chart here.

Accredit paid $75.00, $28.80, and $12.20. Yes This Time paid $5.60 and $4.00. Cellist paid $3.60.

Bred in Kentucky by E. H. Beau Lane III, Accredit is out of the unraced Bernstein mare Berncredit. He is trained by Pavel Matejka, who also co-owns the colt with Bob Grayson, Jr. Accredit was a $60,000 RNA consigned by Beau Lane Bloodstock at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. With his win in the Dueling Grounds Derby, the 3-year-old colt has three wins in seven lifetime starts for career earnings of $572,619.

Adventuring Finds Winner’s Circle In Dueling Grounds Oaks

Once around the undulating course at Kentucky Downs, Adventuring braved the yielding ground and a field of six others to find the winner's circle in the $500,000 Dueling Grounds Oaks. In making nearly post a winning one, the 3-year-old daughter of Pioneerof the Nile gave jockey Joel Rosario his fourth win on the first day of racing at the Franklin, Ky., track.

Adventuring and Serene, both owned by Godolphin, broke fastest, with Rosario putting his filly on the lead as James Graham on Serene was content to take up third positon, with Oliviaofthedesert in second. Adventuring held onto the lead for much of the race, setting a manageable pace of :26.10 for the first quarter, :51.49 for the half-mile, and 1:16.89 for six furlongs. Rosario gave the filly a breather about halfway through the 1 5/16-mile Dueling Ground Oaks, allowing Oliviaofthedesert to briefly take over the front as they approached the final bend. Entering the long Kentucky Downs stretch, Rosario easily put Adventuring back on the lead, with Oliviaofthedesert and Serene still second and third.

Down the stretch, Adventuring was able to hold on to her lead on the outside despite challenges from Viburnum and Oliviaofthedesert. She crossed the wire two lengths in front, with Viburnum, Oliviaofthedesert, and Inthewinnerscircle rounding out the top four.

The final time for the 1 5/16-mile Dueling Grounds Oaks was 2:12.33. Find this race's chart here.

Adventuring paid $4.20, $2.80, and $2.60. Viburnum paid $13.80 and $8.20. Oliviaofthedesert paid $6.00.

Bred in Kentucky by her owner, Adventuring is out of Hard Spun mare Questing. She is trained by Brad Cox. With her win in the Oaks, she improves to three wins in eight lifetime starts.

Kentucky Downs Turf Pick of the Day for Sept. 6

Steve Sherack and Brian DiDonato give their best bet for each day of racing during the FanDuel Meet at Kentucky Downs. $100 Win/Place format; highest bankroll at the end wins.

Steve Sherack: Sunday's Results – Gamble's Orb finished 6th.

Monday – Race 7 – Considering the brutal meet trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. has endured at Saratoga this summer, Setting the Mood's second-place finish in a first-level allowance going long Aug. 6 looks even better now. Claimed for just $20k back in March and a back-to-back winner at Gulfstream right out of the box, she's really seemed to re-find her very solid long-distance grass form versus much tougher of 2020 for Todd Pletcher, which is easily good enough to win this. Selection: #3 Setting the Mood (7-2).

Brian DiDonato: Sunday's Results – Go Bali Go rushed up to set the pace before fading late.

Monday – Race 4 – Cutbacks don't typically work in traditional turf sprints (i.e. 5f or 5 1/2f), but they seem to be pretty effective in these elongated sprints at Kentucky Downs. There are several who are shortening up in this race, and the one who interests me most is Button Boy. He ran like a prototypical cutback candidate in his last two–in contention turning for home and then just up and down in the stretch. Trainer Nacho Correas takes the blinkers off this time and the gelding shows two very sharp-looking works since his last start. With Julien Leparoux up, I'd expect Button Back to sit back and hopefully pick them all off late with a closing kick he hasn't shown going long. Selection: #3 Button Boy (8-1).
