‘A Great Mind’: $3.65 Million Purchase Cezanne Will Try Two-Turn Allowance Before Derby Prep

A $3.65 million 2-year-old at last spring's Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale, Cezanne lived up to early expectations when breaking his maiden on debut earlier this month at Santa Anita Park. For his second start, the 3-year-old son of Curlin will step up to two turns in a one-mile allowance race at Los Alamitos this Thursday.

Trained by Bob Baffert for owners Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and St. Elias Stable, Cezanne is out of the Bernardini mare Achieving. His third dam is the Deputy Minister mare Better Than Honour, the dam of Belmont Stakes winners Jazil and Rags to Riches.

In his debut, the colt sat just off the pace before making his bid between rivals on the turn, then pulling away down the lane to win by 2 1/4 lengths, completing 6 1/2 furlongs on the fast main track in 1:16.13. Since that start, Cezanne has breezed twice at Santa Anita, going five furlongs in 1:01.80 on June 22 and a half-mile in :48 flat on June 28.

“He's still a little heavy,” Baffert told the Daily Racing Form. “More racing will help him. He's shown us he's a top horse. He's got a great mind and doesn't get excited. He's been behaving himself.”

Should his two-turn debut prove successful, Cezanne could be considered for a Kentucky Derby prep race, said Baffert.

Kentucky Derby Museum Resumes Tours Of Churchill Downs

The Kentucky Derby Museum is thrilled to resume tours at historic Churchill Downs Monday, June 29. As the exclusive tour partner with Churchill Downs, the Museum provides a bucket list opportunity for visitors to explore and learn about the world famous racetrack.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tours have been suspended since March 16 when the Museum closed to the public. The Museum reopened June 8 but could not yet conduct its exclusive tours at Churchill Downs due to COVID-19 restrictions.

For the first time ever, Churchill Downs is allowing Museum Guests to access The Mansion on two tours: Behind the Scenes and the Churchill Downs After-Hours Tours. These tours offer special access to non-public, posh areas of Churchill Downs Racetrack, including the exclusive, invitation-only venue called The Mansion.

Those looking to see horses on the track exercising can check out the Racehorse Workout Tour, offered Monday – Saturday from 7:30 A.M. – 8:30 A.M. As always, a guided 30 minute Historic Walking Tour is free with general admission. While the majority of tours resume, tour options that explore the Backside of the racetrack remain suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions. Additional tour options can be explored here.

Kentucky Derby Museum continues to follow state and federal health guidelines regarding health and safety. Tour capacity is limited to 10 people to allow for proper social distancing. Guests are required to go through a temperature check and wear a mask before touring on Churchill Downs' property.

Tiz The Law Favored At 2-1 In Latest Kentucky Derby Future Wager

With the rescheduled Kentucky Derby 10 weeks away, Belmont Stakes (Grade I) winner Tiz the Law closed as the 2-1 favorite in Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager with Santa Anita Derby (GI) winner Honor A. P. the 6-1 second choice.

The pari-mutuel field of “All Other 3-Year-Old Males” closed as the 8-1 third choice and was followed in the betting by the Bob Baffert-trained duo of Santa Anita Derby runner-up Authentic at 11-1 and impressive seven-length debut winner Uncle Chuck at 13-1. Another horse that attracted attention was unbeaten Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby leader Café Pharoah, who closed at 14-1.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager, offered for a 22nd consecutive year, enables bettors to wager on possible Kentucky Derby contenders in advance of America's greatest race at odds that could be more attractive than those available on the day of the race.

On March 17, Churchill Downs Incorporated announced the 146^th running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (GI), the 1 1/4-mile classic for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds, would be rescheduled from Saturday, May 2, to Saturday, Sept. 5, amid public health concerns in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Total handle for Pool 5 of the KDFW was $337,607 ($219,946 in the Win pool and $117,661 in Exactas).

Dates for the remaining 2020 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks future pools are July 17-19 (Pool 6) and Aug. 7-9 (Pool 7). Pool 2 of the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager will coincide with the Derby's Pool 6 on 17-19.

Cairo Prince Colt Upsets Ohio Derby

Dean Martini proved to be a shrewd claim for trainer Tom Amoss after upsetting the $500,000 GIII Ohio Derby Saturday at Thistledown, which offered 50 points towards the Sept. 5 GI Kentucky Derby. Away alertly from his rail draw, the 14-1 shot contested the pace heading into the first turn and was a close-up third as the first quarter went in :22.80. Shuffled back a bit on the fence as the half went in :47.22, the bay reasserted on the backstretch, heading pacesetter Lebda (Raison d’Etat). Dean Martini continued strongly into the stretch, rolling clear of his competition, and held off a late charge from South Bend to score. Champion Storm the Court rounded out the trifecta.

Starting his career in California with Peter Miller and owners Rockingham Ranch and David Bernsen, Dean Martini hit the board in three of his four starts, and was transferred to Brad Cox last fall. In the money in his first three races for that barn, he romped by 6 3/4 lengths in a $50,000 maiden claimer at Churchill May 17, where he was claimed by Amoss and Raise the BAR Racing LLC. He finished second in his next start for them in a nine-panel optional claimer in Louisville June 12.

Dean Martini is the fourth graded winner and eighth black-type winner for his sire Cairo Prince. His dual stakes-winning dam Soundwave is a half-sister to GSW Letgomyecho (Menifee), who is the dam of Grade III-winning ‘TDN Rising Star’ J Boys Echo (Mineshaft), GISP Echo Town (Speightstown) and GSP Unbridled Outlaw (Unbridled’s Song). Soundwave is also responsible for the unraced juvenile filly Sauvecito (Cairo Prince), a yearling filly by Creative Cause and a colt by that stallion born Mar. 12 of this year.
