Kentucky Derby Museum Vice President Named Chairwoman For Kentucky Travel Industry Association

Kentucky Derby Museum is excited to announce its Vice President, Katie Fussenegger, has been named Chairwoman of the Board for the Kentucky Travel Industry Association. Founded in 1980, KTIA provides Kentucky's tourism industry with advocacy, education, information and business development services. KTIA leads a concerted effort to increase awareness of the vital role that tourism plays in Kentucky's economy. Fussenegger's term begins immediately and runs for one year.

Fussenegger has an impressive track record in the Kentucky Tourism Industry, previously serving as the President & CEO of ShelbyKY Tourism before moving to the Kentucky Derby Museum in February 2020 as Vice President of the nonprofit organization.

She was appointed to the KTIA Board in November 2016, served as Treasurer in 2019 and Vice Chair the past two years, and in 2019, she was honored as KTIA Member of the Year. She has served as the President of Skal International Louisville in both 2020 and 2021, an international travel and tourism group that promotes global tourism. She is also a past president of the Kentucky Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus. Other recent career highlights include being named a “Way to go Woman!” in the leadership category for Today's Woman, and a Top Woman in Business in 2020 by The Lane Report.

“I am excited to take the reins in this leadership role with the KTIA Board. Kentucky is my home, and my heart is in promoting this great state and all that its tourism and hospitality industries have to offer,” said Fussenegger. “It is tourism's time to make a comeback after being hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, and I am ready with the leaders on this Board to position our state as a top tourism destination.”

Her role as Vice President at Kentucky Derby Museum began at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and she has been monumental in implementing COVID-19 safety protocols for Museum Staff and Guests. As Vice President, Fussenegger oversees various aspects of daily operations at the Museum, provides leadership oversight, increases revenue for various departments and oversees proper execution of the Museum's overall budget. She's also key in hiring, developing and appraising staff.

Kevin Flanery To Be Honored With Warner L. Jones Horseman Of The Year Award This Saturday

Kevin Flanery, who retired as the 13th Churchill Downs Racetrack President last December, will be honored Saturday with the Warner L. Jones Jr. Horseman of the Year Award at the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners' 33rd annual awards gala at the Kentucky Derby Museum.

Cocktails begin at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are available for $125, which include dinner and drinks, by contacting Marlene Meyer at (502) 458-5820.

The award recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions to Kentucky racing and sharing the passion exemplified by Jones, who spent 50 years on the Churchill Downs board, including eight as chairman during the iconic track's resurgence. Warner Jones – the first, and so far only breeder of a Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Oaks and Breeders' Cup winner – was the inaugural award winner in 1988, six years before his death.

Steve Asmussen, the 2020 recipient, will also be honored since last year's event was not able to be staged.

‘Welcome to Derbyville’ Exhibit Opens Nov. 19 at Kentucky Derby Museum

Visitors can explore the wild stories and unique culture of the GI Kentucky Derby at a new exhibit, Welcome to Derbyville, opening Nov. 19 at Kentucky Derby Museum.

The exhibit was born from the idea that most years on Derby Day, Churchill Downs transforms into the state's third-largest city, drawing its temporary residents into a remarkable cultural experience that is unique to other sporting events. The horses, the people-watching, the fashion–this new exhibit explores this 147-acre city, Derbyville, and who comes to stay and why.

The unique culture of the Kentucky Derby will come to life through pictures, videos, artwork and artifacts, plus interactive components where visitors can leave their own Derbyville stories.

Additionally, the exhibit will take a deep dive into journalist Hunter S. Thompson and artist Ralph Steadman's raucous commentary, “The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved,” featuring some familiar–and new–artifacts from their trip to the 1970 Derby. Welcome To Derbyville: New Exhibit Opens At Kentucky Derby Museum On Nov. 19

Spectators climbing the Infield's flagpole. A skydiver surprising 100,000 fans with a parachute landing into the Infield crowd. Visitors can explore the wild stories and unique culture of the Kentucky Derby at a new exhibit, Welcome to Derbyville, opening Nov. 19 at Kentucky Derby Museum.

The exhibit is being installed right now in the Museum's Matt Winn Theatre, a space on the second floor used for rotating exhibits. The exhibit's concept was born from the idea that most years on Derby Day, Churchill Downs transforms into the state's third largest city, drawing its temporary residents into a remarkable cultural experience that is unique to other sporting events. The horses, the people-watching, the fashion – this new exhibit explores this 147 acre city, Derbyville, and who comes to stay and why.

The unique culture of the Kentucky Derby will come to life through pictures, videos, artwork and artifacts, plus interactive components where visitors can leave their own Derbyville stories.

Additionally, the exhibit will take a deep dive into journalist Hunter S. Thompson and artist Ralph Steadman's raucous commentary, “The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved,” featuring some familiar (and NEW) artifacts from their trip to the 1970 Kentucky Derby. With one of Jeff Ruby's bedazzled Derby Day ensembles, the Museum is bringing to its guests a number of objects from the vault that have never been displayed.
