Grounded: Severe Weather Delays Known Agenda’s Flight To Kentucky

St. Elias Stable's homebred Known Agenda, a major Triple Crown contender following his impressive victory in the $750,000 Curlin Florida Derby (G1) presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farms at Xalapa March 27 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., had a planned trip to Kentucky postponed 24 hours due to inclement weather.

Known Agenda was scheduled to fly from South Florida to Louisville Sunday but severe thunderstorms sweeping through the area pushed the flight to Monday, trainer Todd Pletcher said.

“There's some bad weather in Orlando, so they postponed the flight. He'll train [Monday] at Palm Beach Downs and then go,” he said. “We were scheduled to go today and then all the bad weather came in.”

A sophomore son of two-time Horse of the Year and 2014 Hall of Famer Curlin, Known Agenda had his first timed work since the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby April 9, an easy half-mile in 50.25 seconds at Palm Beach Downs.

“He's doing excellent. We're very happy with him,” Pletcher said. “He's showing good energy. He seems pleased with himself.”

Known Agenda worked in company with Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1) winner Colonel Liam. At Churchill Downs he will join Wood Memorial (G2) winner Bourbonic and runner-up Dynamic One as well as Sainthood, second in the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G2) at Turfway Park, as Pletcher's Kentucky Derby (G1) prospects.

“We were kind of monitoring the weather everywhere and the way things kind of unfolded last week with a couple horses in New York going to Louisville, it just seemed to make sense to consolidate there,” Pletcher said. “[Known Agenda] was scheduled to breeze [Saturday], we got that in, and now we'll get to Churchill and, hopefully, breeze on Friday there.”

Pletcher said he plans to give Known Agenda two works at Churchill in his attempt to win a third Derby. He won with Super Saver in 2010 and Always Dreaming in 2017, the latter one of the trainer's record six Florida Derby victories.

Always Dreaming, who counted St. Elias Stable among his large ownership group, went winless at 2 before breaking his maiden in his 3-year-old opener. He made his Gulfstream debut winning a 1 1/8-mile optional claiming allowance that earned him a shot in the Florida Derby, his first stakes race, which he captured by five lengths.

Known Agenda, meanwhile, won once in three juvenile starts and he, too, punched his Florida Derby ticket with an optional claiming allowance going 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream. His came Feb. 26, the first time he raced with blinkers.

“They're different personalities. Always Dreaming was the kind of horse that would really show off in the mornings and work fast and things like that,” Pletcher said, “where this horse is a little more laid-back personality. He's not one that's going to put in some super quick breezes, but I feel like the mile and a quarter is right in his wheelhouse and I like the way he's doing.”

Irad Ortiz Jr., Gulfstream's three-time defending Championship Meet leading rider, will ride Known Agenda in the Kentucky Derby. Pletcher has won a record 17 Championship Meet training titles, having his unprecedented streak snapped at 15 straight years in 2018-19.

Lexington Stakes Winner King Fury, 28th On Derby Points List, Has Preakness As Backup Plan

Trainer Kenny McPeek said Fern Circle Stables and Three Chimney Farm's King Fury will be pointed to the Kentucky Derby (G1) Presented by Woodford Reserve or the Preakness (G1) after winning the $200,000 Stonestreet Lexington (G3) on Saturday at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. The Curlin colt returned to McPeek's division at Churchill Downs on Saturday night, where his two wins last year included the Street Sense Stakes.

With the 20 points he earned in the Stonestreet Lexington, King Fury ranks 28th on the leaderboard and would need several defections to draw into the May 1 Derby, which is limited to 20 starters.

“All good; we are real proud of him,” McPeek said. “If his points get him in to the Kentucky Derby, we will probably run. It is his home track and he has won there. If he doesn't get in the Derby, he will run in the Preakness (on May 15.) He seems like a horse that is ready to do all that. We will have to see how that ball bounces. It is out of our control, but we will keep his work schedule the same.”

Midnight Bourbon, Soup And Sandwich Post Derby Tune-ups At Churchill Downs

On a seasonably cool Sunday morning at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., Kentucky Derby (Grade 1) contenders Midnight Bourbon and Soup and Sandwich continued their preparation for the first Saturday in May with published workouts beneath the Twin Spires.

Winchell Thoroughbreds' homebred G3 winner Midnight Bourbon breezed five furlongs in 1:00.40 while Live Oak Plantation's G1-placed Soup and Sandwich worked a half-mile in :48.80.

Soup and Sandwich, the runner-up finisher in the $750,000 Florida Derby (G1), worked at 5:30 a.m. (all times Eastern) with jockey Declan Carroll aboard through fractions of :12.60 and :24.60. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.60 and completed seven-eighths of a mile in 1:27.40. The striking gray son of Into Mischief worked on the outside of two-time winner Natural Power, who completed a half-mile in :49.20.

“This was the first time I've seen him work because he's been in Florida,” said trainer Mark Casse's assistant, David Carroll. “He has a big stride on him and really got over the track well. I told Declan to just let him do his thing and gallop out nicely. I think he's starting to find his stride. The Derby will be the first time he'll be led over from his own stall and I think it'll benefit him getting experience over the track.”

Soup and Sandwich has not finished off the board in three lifetime starts. He dominated Florida-bred competition in his debut at Gulfstream by 7 ¼ lengths. He returned in a first-level allowance at Tampa Bay Downs where he bested two rivals by 2 ¾ lengths. The homebred finished 2 ¾ lengths behind Known Agenda in the Florida Derby after dueling on the lead for the majority of the 1 1/8-mile race.

Two hours after Soup and Sandwich recorded his published workout, Midnight Bourbon took to the track and breezed on the outside of stablemate Jackie's Warrior through fractions of :12.40, :24.80 and :36.80. The duo galloped out together through five furlongs in 1:13.20 and completed seven furlongs in 1:27.40.

Like fellow Derby contender Soup and Sandwich, Midnight Bourbon has never finished off the board. Through seven lifetime starts, he's recorded two wins, two seconds and three third-place finishes. Most recently, the son of Tiznow finished second to Hot Rod Charlie in the $1 million Louisiana Derby (G2).

The field for the $3 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve continues to take shape even with the completion of the qualifying races. As of Sunday morning, the last horse in the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby was Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) runner-up Sainthood with 40 points. He's scheduled to arrive at Churchill Downs on Sunday along with stablemate Known Agenda.

UPCOMING ARRIVALS – Several contenders from trainer Todd Pletcher's squad are scheduled to arrive at Churchill Downs on Sunday including Derby contenders Known Agenda and Sainthood along with Oaks runner Malathaat, according to senior director of the stable area Steve Hargrave.

Sainthood and Malathaat are both scheduled to van approximately 75 miles from Keeneland to Churchill Downs at 11 a.m. Sunday. Known Agenda is slated to arrive later in the afternoon from South Florida. Pletcher's New York-based runners Bourbonic and Dynamic One are scheduled to van Sunday evening to Louisville and arrive at approximately 5 a.m. Monday.

Pletcher will be stabled in Barn 42 at Churchill Downs

DOWN THE STRETCH – Travel plans for UAE Derby (G2) runner-up Panadol continue to be finalized. Trainer Salem bin Ghadayer reported that a decision on the colt's plans to run in the Derby would be finalized in the upcoming days. … Kentucky Oaks (G1) contender Clairiere worked five furlongs in 1:02 Sunday morning at Churchill Downs. The Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) runner-up worked inside of multiple graded stakes winner Finite. … Trainer Kenny McPeek stated Lexington Stakes (G3) winner King Fury would run in either the Derby or Preakness (G1). “We'll see how he comes out of the (Lexington) and if he gets enough points to get in the Derby,” McPeek said. “I think the Derby distance of 1 ¼ miles will hit him perfectly.” … The first day of the exclusive training period for Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks (G1) contenders will start Saturday at 7:30 a.m. and run through Thursday, April 29. Derby and Oaks horses will have a 15-minute training window where they will be the only horses on the track.

‘Knock On Wood, We’re Heading The Right Way’: Prat Aboard As Hot Rod Charlie Breezes For O’Neill

HOT ROD IN SHARP WORK FOR KENTUCKY DERBY

Grade 2 Louisiana Derby winner Hot Rod Charlie worked five furlongs Saturday at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., in company with stablemate Hammering Lemon, after which Doug O'Neill had high praise for the son of Oxbow as he prepares for the Kentucky Derby on May 1.

“He worked really, really well,” said O'Neill, in pursuit of his third win in the Run for the Roses, having won it in 2012 with I'll Have Another and 2016 with Nyquist.

“I think the clockers gave him 1:01 and two, breezing (the actual time was 1:01.20, breezing),” said O'Neill, who had Flavien Prat aboard. “Breezing” is a rare designation given to horses by clockers in Southern California, who typically designate workouts as being done “handily.”

“Charlie had company with a horse named Hammering Lemon (clocked in 1:01.60) who broke off in front of him. They both finished up good but Charlie was the better of the two.

“Knock on wood we're heading the right way.”

Bob Baffert, seeking his seventh win the Kentucky Derby, plans to work Runhappy Santa Anita Derby runner-up Medina Spirit “next weekend.”
