Kent Desormeaux Completing In-Patient Treatment For Alcohol Abuse; Hopes To Return To The Saddle Dec. 26

The Daily Racing Form has reported that Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux is in the midst of an in-patient treatment program for alcohol abuse, and that the program is the most intensive program he has been a part of thus far.

Desormeaux's highly successful career has been comparatively erratic in recent years, and the rider has made no secret of his struggles with alcohol. Most recently, he was suspended following an incident at Del Mar when, according to a California Horse Racing Board complaint, he got into a physical altercation with a TVG cameraman while intoxicated and shouted repeated racial slurs at the man. The Form reports he has completed his suspension for that incident but the CHRB's ruling also required him to be evaluated by the Winners Foundation, a California-based organization that works with backstretch workers battling addiction.

Desormeaux checked himself into Pasadena's Impact House Oct. 1 and is scheduled to complete his program in mid-December. After that, he will be part of a sober living program for 60 days and continue with outpatient treatment for six months.

Kent Desormeaux Suspended For Disorderly Conduct After Using Racial Slur In July Incident At Del Mar

Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux has been suspended 15 days by California Horse Racing Board stewards for a July 28 incident on the grounds of the Del Mar racetrack and fairgrounds in which Desormeaux is said to have used a racial slur against an African-American television cameraman that led to a fight between the two men, according to Daily Racing Form.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club ejected Desormeaux from the property shortly after the incident.

The stewards' ruling, as reported by the Form, cited Desormeaux for disorderly conduct and requires that he be evaluated by the Winners Foundation, which offers assistance to individuals in California racing dealing with substance abuse issues. In the past, Desormeaux has admitted to being an alcoholic.

A verbal dispute in the RV parking area of the track property between Desormeaux, 50, and 44-year-old Guy Stuttley became physical after Desormeaux used a racial slur, according to the report. Stuttley was fined $200 for fighting and disorderly conducted in a separate ruling, according to the Form.

His agent, J.R. Pegram, said Desormeaux does not intend to appeal the suspension. Pegram told the Form the Louisiana native plans to return to Southern California to resume riding at the end of the suspension, which is to run through Sept. 22.

Del Mar Bans Desormeaux

Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux was take off his mount at Del Mar Friday by track management after an alleged altercation earlier in the week. The story was originally reported by the Daily Racing Form.

Del Mar officials did not provide specifics on the alleged incident, but Del Mar’s Josh Rubinstein said, “Our action is not related to racing, but rather is as a result of conduct not consistent with our standards and values.”

A California Horse Racing Board rule allows a racetrack to remove or deny “access for any reason deemed appropriate by the association.” The CHRB’s Mike Marten said, “The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has provided the California Horse Racing Board with the information they relied upon. The CHRB is conducting its own investigation to determine if there were any rule violations that would require CHRB action with respect to Mr. Desormeaux’s license.:

Desormeaux’s agent J.R. Pegram refused to comment.

Desormeaux Excluded From Del Mar After Non-Racing Incident

Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux, who by his own admission has battled alcoholism during his riding career, has been excluded until further notice by management of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., according to published reports.

Desormeaux, 50, allegedly was involved in a fight on Del Mar fairgrounds property in an area where campers and trailers house racing personnel during the meet.

He was taken off one mount on Friday's card. Two other horses he was scheduled to ride were scratched.

“Our action is not related to anything in racing, but rather to conduct which we don't feel is consistent with our standards,” Del Mar CEO Joe Harper told Bloodhorse.com.

Desormeaux has won three races from 14 mounts during the current Del Mar meet that began on July 10. The Louisiana native had been riding at Golden Gate Fields in Northern California after a brief stint at Fair Grounds in New Orleans that yielded only one victory over the winter.

Desormeaux has expressed a desire to become the all-time leading Cajun jockey. Retired Hall of Famer Eddie Delahoussaye leads his fellow Louisiana riders with 6,384 victories. Desormeaux needs more than 300 wins to pass Delahoussaye, but has exceeded 100 wins a year just twice in the last decade. He won 36 races in 2019 and just 28 so far this year.
