Street Sense Filly Romps in Rags to Riches

Sandstone earned her second straight open-lengths win under the Twin Spires with a wire-to-wire victory in the Rags to Riches S. at Churchill Sunday. The dark bay filly took the lead early was shadowed by favorite Yuugiri through an opening quarter in :24.51. Favored Yuugiri rolled up to challenge the pacesetter after a half in :48.55 and appeared to gain a slim advantage in upper stretch, but Sandstone battled back and powered clear to an authoritative victory.

Freshened up after finishing a well-beaten fifth in her 5 1/2-furlong debut at Churchill May 28, Sandstone returned with a romping nine-length victory over one mile in Louisville Oct. 3.

Sandstone Sensational In Rags To Riches At Churchill Downs

On a card focused on the stars of tomorrow, Sandstone showed she is one to watch with her multi-length win in the Rags to Riches at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. The daughter of Street Sense showed a stunning turn of foot, pulling away from a challenging Yuugiri with ease to earn her second career win and her first stakes.

In a short field of four, Sandstone went straight to the lead, putting a length between her and Yuugiri around the first turn. She maintained that lead down the backstretch, with Yuugiri mounting her challenge around the far turn.

Tyler Gaffalione and Yuugiri pulled within a head of Sandstone on the turn, hitting the stretch nearly even with Sandstone. Under the Twin Spires, Yuugiri got her nose in front briefly, but Sandstone rallied on her inside, finding another gear and kicking away easily. At the wire, Sandstone was 10 3/4 lengths in front, with Yuugiri, Mama Rina, and Manasota Sunset rounding out the order of finish.

Bred in Kentucky by Mark Stansell and Cindy Stansell, Sandstone is out of the Seattle Slow mare Seattle Shimmer. Owned by Susan Moulton, the 2-year-old filly is trained by Kenny McPeek. She was consigned by Gainesway and sold to Kenneth McPeek, agent for $165,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. With her win in the Rags to Riches, the filly has two wins in three starts, for career earnings of $199,960.

Camp Hope Cruises To Victory In Bryan Station At Keeneland

Walking L Thoroughbreds' Camp Hope overtook pacesetter Dreamer's Disease at the top of the lane and cruised to a 2 ¾-length score in the $150,000 Bryan Station for his second win of the Fall Meet. He won a 1 1/8-mile allowance race on turf Oct. 8, opening day of the season at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky.

Trained by Kenny McPeek and ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., Camp Hope covered the mile over a turf course rated yielding in 1:38.32.

Dreamer's Disease had a clear lead over the Bryan Station field through an opening quarter-mile in :24.62. Camp Hope and Hernandez tracked in second, one length off Dreamer's Disease. Following a half-mile split of :49.04, Camp Hope moved to the outside of the tiring pacesetter and spurted clear for a comfortable victory.

Camp Hope paid $7.00, $4.80, and $3.40 for the win. Like the King and jockey John Velazquez finished second and returned $6.60 and $4.00, while Yes This Time and Tyler Gaffalione rallied for third and paid $2.80.

A Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale graduate bred in Kentucky by Bret Jones, Camp Hope is a 3-year-old son of Summer Front out of the Pulpit mare Praising. He received $90,000 for today's win, which improved his overall record to 9-3-0-2 with earnings of $225,557.

Charles Chrome was a nose back in fourth and was followed by Hush of a Storm, Point Me By, Scarlett Sky, Gallant Guy, and Dreamer's Disease.

Breeders’ Cup Contenders Work At Churchill Downs Saturday

Following overnight rain in the Louisville area, several Breeders' Cup contenders had their regular training schedules altered Saturday morning because of a “sloppy” track at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

However, three World Championships-bound juveniles recorded their final works prior to shipping to Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., including Lucky Seven Stable's $2 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile hope Rattle N Roll, who worked five furlongs in 1:02.40. More than three hours after Rattle N Roll breezed, Dawn and Ike Thrash's $1 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf contender Turnerloose worked five furlongs in 1:02.20 outside of Donegal Racing's $1 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf possible Ready to Purrform.

Rattle N Roll, trained by Kenny McPeek and owned by the Louisville-based Mackin family, worked at 5:40 a.m. through early fractions of :13, :25.40, and :37.20. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:16. McPeek had a busy morning with Rattle N Roll breezing at Churchill Downs while Juvenile Turf runner Tiz the Bomb and $2 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf contender Reina de Mollendo (ARG) were scheduled to work at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky.

Trainer Brad Cox altered the originally-scheduled works of $6 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic top choices Essential Quality and Knicks Go to Sunday along with $2 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff contestant Shedaresthedevil.

“I think the track will dry out pretty well (Saturday) afternoon,” Cox said. “These three have an extra day in their schedule compared to Ready to Purrform and Turnerloose.”

Turnerloose and Ready to Purrform worked over the sloppy conditions for Cox at 9 a.m. through early fractions of :12.60, :24.60, and :49. Ready to Purrform needs one defection from the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf pre-entries in order to make the field.

All of the local Breeders' Cup hopefuls are scheduled to van to Indianapolis on Monday at noon (all times Eastern) for a 4 p.m. flight.
