Bauhinia At Saint-Cloud For Second Test

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Friday's Observations features the return of a 'TDN Rising Star'.

13.40 Saint-Cloud, Cond, €34,000, 2yo, f, 7 1/2fT
BAUHINIA (IRE) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) earned TDN Rising Star status at ParisLongchamp last month and Godolphin's daughter of the G2 Rockfel S.-placed Desert Blossom (Ire) (Shamardal) is kept away from black-type company for now by Andre Fabre. Among her opponents is Ecurie des Charmes's Deauville conditions scorer Opera Mundi (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), a Carlos & Yann Lerner-trained relative of the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner Plumania (GB) (Anabaa) and G1 Prix Vermeille winner Left Hand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

14.25 Newbury, Cond, £20,000, 2yo, f, 7fT
INVERSION (GB) (Frankel {GB}) makes her debut in this Dubai Duty Free Full of Surprises British EBF Fillies' Conditions S. which obviously enjoys a special resonance with the Charlton stable, having won it for three of the last five years including with the subsequent G1 Fillies' Mile heroine Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and with this Juddmonte homebred's half-sister Lucid Dreamer (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Also successful with L'Ancresse (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}) in 2002, their runner this time is also a half-sister to the recent GI Diana S. winner Whitebeam (GB) (Caravaggio).

16.40 Kempton, Novice, £9,900, 2yo, 7fT
MILITARY LEADER (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is introduced by Charlie Appleby at a track at which he likes to run his smart juveniles and this is a half-brother to this year's G1 Coronation S. third Sounds Of Heaven (GB) (Kingman {GB}). A 1.5million gns Tatts Book 1 purchase, he hails from the spectacularly successful Kilfrush Stud family of Galileo's Hydrangea (Ire), The United States (Ire) and Hermosa (Ire).

17.15 Kempton, Novice, £9,900, 2yo, 7fT
AGE OF BAROQUE (FR) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) is another Godolphin-Appleby project starting out on the Polytrack, being a grandson of the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp winner Grey Lilas (Ire) (Danehill) from the immediate family of the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G1 Prix de Diane heroine Golden Lilac (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Costing €575,000 at last year's Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale, the Februray-foaled bay has some experienced peers to overcome including Victorious Racing's 360,000gns Tatts Craven Breeze-Up graduate Military Artist (Munnings) from the Roger Varian stable.

Zoustar’s Starlust Prevails In Sirenia Thriller

Fitri Hay's dual nursery handicap second Starlust (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}–Beyond Desire {GB}, by Invincible Spirit {Ire}), notched a quickfire double at Chelmsford and Newbury earlier in the year and took a step up the ladder with a narrow verdict in Saturday's G3 Unibet Zero% Mission Sirenia S. at Kempton, his sixth straight start going six furlongs.

With tasks made easier by the scratching of 'TDN Rising Star' Eben Shaddad (Calyx {GB}), Starlust went postward as the 2-1 second favourite and found a comfortable rhythm off the pace in sixth before improving one spot on the run to halfway. Making eyecatching headway out wide in the straight, he quickened stylishly to launch his challenge entering the final furlong and kept on in relentless fashion under hands-and-heels rousting to deny the resilient Seven Questions (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) by a head after a thrilling tussle. Juddmonte's Array (Ire) (No Nay Never), who ran second behind Starlust at Newbury in July, was on hand throughout the final quarter-mile and tapped out late to finish a half-length back in third.

“I was pretty tight to Callum [Shepherd on Seven Questions], so I couldn't use my stick and was hands and heels for a good furlong-and-a-half,” explained winning rider Hector Crouch. “Every time Callum came to fight back, my lad kept keeping his nose in front and I was always pretty confident we were going to win. He's a classy horse, he's very tough and his attitude is impeccable. I see no reason why he won't improve further from this. He's versatile, ground-wise, and I think he's going to be a real good, fun horse.”

Pedigree Notes

Starlust is the seventh of nine foals and one of four scorers out of G3 Prix de Saint-Georges victrix Beyond Desire (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). The April-foaled bay is full to a weanling filly and a half to Listed Lansdown Fillies' S. winner Queen Of Desire (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Ghaiyyath (Ire). Beyond Desire is out of a multiple-winning half to G3 Princess Royal S. victrix Mazuna (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), whose descendants include dual Group 2-winning distaffer Beautiful Romance (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), G2 Premio Roma third Brentford Hope (GB) (Camelot {GB}) and the stakes-placed duo Good Fortune (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and Executive Force (GB) (Sepoy {Aus}).

Bay Bridge Back With A Bang At Kempton

Sir Michael Stoute trainee Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}–Hayyona {GB}, by Multiplex {GB}), winless in three Group 1 starts since annexing last term's G1 Champion S., regained the winning thread with a confidence-boosting success in Saturday's G3 Unibet September S. at Kempton.

The 8-11 favourite hit the board in both G1 Prix Ganay and G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup earlier in the campaign and went postward this first outing at the 12-furlong trip coming back off a fifth in the G1 Prince of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot. Bay Bridge broke well and was positioned fourth passing the judge first time before tanking along in third down the backstraight. Waiting patiently for the cutaway once turning for home, he quickened in style to seize control approaching the final furlong and stayed on strongly thereafter to easily defeat Candleford (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) by 3 3/4 lengths, becoming a record seventh winner of the contest for Stoute.

“We were unsure about the distance, so we've ticked that box and that's a real big plus,” said Stoute after adding another edition to his record haul. “We'll do some thinking now with the owners as to where we go next. The [faster] ground stopped him earlier in the season, so he had an enforced break. He was very impressive today and I like the way he did it.”

Pedigree Notes

Bay Bridge is the fourth of eight foals and one of three scorers from four runners out of a half-sister to G2 Prix Eugene Adam victor Shimraan (Fr) (Rainbow Quest). He is full to a weanling colt and a half to the unraced 2-year-old colt Lucky Hour (GB) (Time Test {GB}). His stakes-winning third dam Shemaya (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), who produced G1 Prix du Jockey Club second Shamkiyr (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), is kin to G3 Prix Allez France victrix Shemima (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), herself the dam of G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner Cormorant (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and Listed Prix Madame Jean Couturie victrix Shemala (Ire) (Danehill). Descendants of Shemala, herself a daughter of G1 Prix de Diane heroine Shemaka (Ire) (Nishapour {Fr}), include G1 Grand Prix de Paris hero Shakeel (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}).

Charity Raises Money Through Namesake

The Little Edi Foundation, the Chelmsford-based charity named after the Richard Spencer-trained Little Edi (GB) (Rajasinghe),  collected £3,000 after the 3-year-old gelding won the Unibet Support Safer Gambling H. by a 1 3/4 length at Kempton Park on Feb. 22.

Last year, Little Edi raised over £10,000 for the charity, which included a novice contest at Chepstow on Aug. 29 under Group 1-winning rider Hollie Doyle. Owner Phil Cunningham, who donates every penny the gelding earns from his share of the prize money to the foundation hopes this is the start of another successful campaign.

“The charity have a little annual get together and last year we gave them a cheque for just under £11,000, so I'm delighted that the horse has been able to win a few thousand pounds more for the kids the charity helps support,” said Cunningham.

Set up in 2016 by Tess Griggs, the Little Edi Foundation aims to help disadvantaged young people through the distribution of aid including fresh food, school uniforms and the opportunity to attend things like summer events that are run during the school holidays.

“We call him the little horse with the heart of a lion and, hopefully, he is not done yet winning prize money,” said the owner.
