Rosario Off His Spa Mounts Wednesday; Camacho Set To Return Friday at Monmouth

Per agent Ron Anderson, Joel Rosario is off his mounts Wednesday at Saratoga as he still has soreness in his mouth after requiring stitches Saturday when Maple Leaf Mel (Cross Traffic) tragically broke down in the GI Test S., NYRA's Keith McCalmont said in a tweet Wednesday. Rosario will aim for a return to riding on Thursday, Anderson added.

After being sidelined more than five weeks due to an injury suffered in a spill on July 2 at Monmouth Park, jockey Samy Camacho will resume riding on Friday, the track said in a release Wednesday.

Camacho will ease into his return with three mounts on the eight-race card. The jockey, who remains tied for second (with Jairo Rendon) in the Oceanport standings, suffered a right shoulder injury in the mishap.

“I'm ready to come back,” said Camacho. “I feel good. I'm ready to go again. I'm not 100 percent, but I am close to being completely healed.”

Camacho said he intends to ride through the end of the Monmouth Park meet on Sept. 11 before heading to Florida to ride for the winter.

“His first day back we didn't want to overdo it,” said Mike Moran, Camacho's agent. “But he says he is feeling great and I'm looking forward to seeing him ride again.”

Irad Ortiz, Jr. Transported To Hospital After Belmont Spill

Reigning champion jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. was placed on a flat board and transported to a hospital via ambulance following a spill in Thursday's fifth race at Belmont Park, according to NYRA analyst and former champion jockey Richard Migliore.

Ortiz's mount, Equal Pay, stumbled in the stretch and unseated the rider in the path of oncoming horses.

On the America's Day At The Races broadcast, Migliore said that after the race, both Jose Ortiz and Junior Alvarado “ran back up above the eighth pole to check on his condition and when (Jose) came back he said was he was moving everything, he's talking, did have some cuts and contusions because he was clipped by one of the trailing horses.… his brother seemed relieved that he was talking and moving everything. It's always a huge concern when a rider goes down, particularly when they are in the path of oncoming horses.”

NYRA's public relations man Keith McCalmont Tweeted that Ortiz is “awake and alert, moving all extremities, and will be transported to local hospital for further evaluation.”

Ortiz is named to ride in nine races on Friday and in all 13 races on Saturday's Belmont Stakes card, including Known Agenda for Todd Pletcher in the Belmont.

Davis, Vargas Transported To Hospital, Filly Dies In Aqueduct Spill

Jockeys Dylan Davis and Jorge Vargas Jr. were transported to a local hospital and the first-time starter Kiss Me Dave perished in a ninth-race incident involving three horses on Saturday at Aqueduct racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

Vargas was aboard Kiss Me Dave for trainer Carla Morgan in the six-furlong maiden race for New York-breds when the 3-year-old filly by Palace fell approaching the far turn, sending Vargas to the ground. Tellaperfecttale, with Davis aboard, tripped over the stricken horse and a third rider, Nik Juarez was thrown when his mount, Maybe I Know swerved to avoid the accident. Juarez was not injured.

According to Keith McCalmont of the New York Racing Association media office, both Tellaperfecttale and Maybe I Know walked off. Kiss Me Dave was dead when veterinarians arrived on the scene.

McCalmont later posted an update on Twitter stating: “Per agent Mike Migliore, Dylan Davis incurred a broken clavicle and will be out indefinitely. Dylan is in good spirits & looks forward to returning to riding ASAP.” …”Vargas, Jr. still waiting on results per agent Jimmy Riccio, Jr.”
