Sequel New York Open House Jan. 21

Sequel New York will hold its 2023 Stallion Open House Jan. 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the stallion barn at 167 Maple Lane, Hudson, New York 12534.

The 2023 Sequel New York roster, with fees, is: Freud (Storm Cat), private; Honest Mischief (Into Mischief), $6,500 LFSN; Keepmeinmind (Laoban), $6,500 LFSN; and Mission Impazible (Unbridled's Song), private.

Multiple mare discounts are available, as well as incentives for repeat breeders.

“We want to give our breeders a chance to be profitable,” said Sequel owner Becky Thomas. “The recent sales in Kentucky have clearly demonstrated breeding in Kentucky does not guarantee a profit. The lower stallion fees, no transportation or boarding costs, coupled with the lucrative purse structure NYRA offers and resulting awards will give our breeders the best opportunity.”

Keepmeinmind To Sequel New York

Keepmeinmind (Laoban–Inclination, by Victory Gallop), a Grade II winner at two and placed three times at Grade I level, will enter stud in 2023 at Sequel New York, where he will cover mares at a fee of $6,500.

Bred by Southern Equine Stables, Keepmeinmind was runner-up to future two-time Eclipse Award winner Essential Quality (Tapit) in the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity and finished third to that rival in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile before breaking his maiden in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. Sixth in the GI Kentucky Derby and fourth in the GI Preakness S. after sluggish starts in those Classics, the bay was a running-on third in the GIII Ohio Derby before going down by a half-length behind Essential Quality in last year's GII Jim Dandy S. Originally trained by Robertino Diodoro, Keepmeinmind was conditioned at four by Todd Pletcher to a Saratoga allowance score in July and a third to Life Is Good (Into Mischief) in the GI Woodward S. this past October.

“Keepmeinmind is a specimen with a terrific disposition,” said Pletcher. “He competed with and beat the best of the best. A big boost for the New York breeding roster.”

Abscess Rules Keepmeinmind Out Of Pennsylvania Derby

Keepmeinmind, the 5-1 morning-line third choice in Saturday's Grade 1, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby, will not run.

Trainer Robertino Diodoro said the son of Laoban has an abscess in his left front foot.

“It's just bad timing,” Diorodo said. “He trained like a monster (Thursday) and we needed the pony to get him off the track, he was feeling so good. This is definitely disappointing, but the main thing is the horse is going to be ok. Terrible timing.”

Keepmeinmind last raced in the Grade 1 Travers at Saratoga on Aug. 28, finishing fourth. He has not won a race in seven starts this year. For his career, Keepmeinmind has one win, three seconds and a third-place finish in 11 starts.

Diodoro had confidence in the week leading up to the Pennsylvania Derby because of the way the late-running Keepmeinmind had been working at Belmont Park.

Now, instead of getting the colt ready for a ship to Parx early Saturday morning, Keepmeinmind will remain at Belmont. Friday afternoon, he was in his stall, his left foot soaking in a tub.

“He is sulking a little bit right now,” Diorodo said. “Those abscesses, they're painful. He will be back to himself in a few days.”

With the defection of Keepmeinmind, the field for the Pennsylvania Derby has been reduced to eight. Earlier in the week, Medina Spirit, the 2-1 morning line favorite, was taken out of the race by trainer Bob Baffert.

Keepmeinmind Scratched from PA Derby

Keepmeinmind (Laoban) has been scratched from Saturday's $1-million GI Pennsylvania Derby after an abscess was discovered in his left front foot.
