Additional Supplements for Keeneland’s HRA Sale

Keeneland will supplement 13 additional horses, including a dozen 2-year-olds, to its November Horses of Racing Age Sale, which will be held Thursday, Nov. 17, at noon ET. The supplements will all be on site for inspection Wednesday. The total number of horses catalogued for the HRA portion is 356.

Among the highlights of the new supplements is an unnamed colt by Good Magic who is a half-brother to recent Japanese GSP Lemon Pop (Lemon Drop Kid). From the family of Danehill, the colt is consigned by Highgate Sales, agent, as a racing or stallion prospect.

An unnamed colt by Into Mischief out of SW Distorted Passion (Distorted Humor) and a half-brother to GSW Mrs McDougal (Medaglia d'Oro) and SP Pendleton (Giant's Causeway) has also been consigned by Highgate Sales, agent, as a racing or stallion prospect.

Highgate Sales, agent, also has an unnamed colt by Into Mischief out of GSW Ever So Clever (Medaglia d'Oro). His granddam is MSW Foxy Danseur (Mr. Greeley) and he also is a racing or stallion prospect.

Among Highgate Sales's other 2-year-old offerings as racing or stallion prospects are colts by Into Mischief, Mendelssohn, Quality Road, and War Front. Highgate also has an unnamed 2-year-old filly by Practical Joke as a racing or broodmare prospect who is a half-sister to five stakes performers.

Grovendale Sales, agent, has the lone new supplement that isn't a juvenile. Grovendale has consigned Takntothecleaners (Secret Circle), a 4-year-old filly who has won or placed in eight of 10 career starts, including an allowance victory at Horseshoe Indianapolis Sept. 22 in her last start. She hails from the family of GISW Bordeaux Bob (Dewan Keys).

Keeneland November Sets New Mark

The Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale ended its eighth session Monday with cumulative sales of $205 million, surpassing total sales of $203 million recorded for last year's entire 10-day auction. On Monday, 260 head sold for $4,313,300, down from the corresponding session in 2021 when 260 generated $4,363,200. Average dipped slightly from $16,782 to $16,590. The median of $11,000 decreased 8.33% from last year's $12,000.

Late in Monday's session, a daughter of Mshawish led the way during the first day of Book. Offered as Hip 2975, Taylor Avenue was secured for $130,000 by CF Farms from the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment. In foal to Speightstown, the stakes-placed filly is out of Aqualane Shores (Friends Lake), the dam of stakes winner Respect the Hustle (Colonel John). In her most recent trip to the sales ring, the 4-year-old sold for $10,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky sale in February.

The second-highest priced offering on the day was Hip 2717, a 3-year-old filly by Flatter who realized a $75,000 final bid from her breeder, Claiborne Farm. Consigned by Winter Quarter Farm, agent, Culdee is out of MSP Bend (Arch), dam of MGSW and track record holder Clearly Now (Horse Greeley) in addition to GSW Bendable (Horse Greeley). The filly was offered by Claiborne to the 2020 Keeneland September Sale, where she brought $180,000. Culdee's brother, by Curlin, sold for $575,000 at the September sale one year earlier.

Leading the youngsters during Monday's session was Hip 3030, a filly by freshman Bolt d'Oro, who was consigned by Elm Tree Farm. The grey is out of Winning Doe (Running Stag), a half-sister to champion grass runners World Approval (Northern Afleet) and Miesque's Approval (Miesque's Son) in addition to GSWs Revved Up (Sultry Song) and Za Approval (Ghostzapper). The Mar. 27 foal is a half-sister to stakes winner and graded placed We Deer You (Hat Trick {Jpn}).

Heading the boys was Hip 2760, who brought $65,000 from Reeves Thoroughbred Racing. Consigned by Trackside Farm (Tom Evans), agent, the colt is by GI Belmont S. winner Tapwrit, represented by his first crop of juveniles in 2022. Out of unraced Fondness (Elusive Quality), the Mar. 4 foal is a half-brother to Discreetness (Discreet Cat). A half-sister to Group 1 scorer Bahamian Pirate (Housebuster) and GSW and MGISP Strong Hope (Grand Slam), Fondness hails from the family of multiple European champion El Gran Senor.

Cumulatively, 1,826 horses have sold for $205,696,600, up 7.96% from last year's $190,531,700 for the comparable period when 1,950 horses sold. The average of $112,649 increased 15.29% from $97,709 in 2021, while the median of $50,000 remained unchanged from last year.

The November sale continues through Wednesday and is followed by a horses of racing age sale Thursday. Bidding begins daily at 10 a.m. Thursday's auction begins at noon.

Another Vekoma on Top as Keeneland November Book 4 Concludes

The Book 4 section of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale concluded Sunday with figures largely in line with the same book in 2021. For the second day in a row, a weanling by Spendthrift's first-crop stallion Vekoma (hip 2355) topped proceedings when selling for $290,000 to Oreo Racing. The colt was consigned by Brookdale Sales on behalf of breeder Susan Anderson.

“He was leggy and attractive and a good size,” said Brookdale's Joe Seitz. “He looks like he will shape out to be a really nice yearling next year. He has that look. I can see a lot of potential in him. We were very happy with that result.”

Out of stakes-winner Female Drama (Indian Charlie), the weanling is a half-brother to multiple stakes-placed Startdfromdabottom (Kantharos). His dam is a half-sister to Argentinian Group 1 winner New Real Deal (Roy).

A filly by Vekoma (hip 2205) brought the top price of Saturday's session of the Keeneland November sale when bringing a final bid of $215,000 from Frankie's Stable. Through seven sessions of the auction, 21 weanlings by the stallion have sold for an average of $93,571. Winner of the 2020 GI Carter H. and GI Met Mile, Vekoma stands at Spendthrift for a fee of $15,000.

While Seitz said he has not seen many of Vekomas first weanlings yet, he did get many positive reviews on the stallion while showing hip 2355 this week at Keeneland.

“We got a lot of compliments on the stallion and a lot of positive feedback when we were showing that colt about how well received the stallion has been,” Seitz said. “So it was a nice crescendo, it built up all week and that really helped the horse.”

The weekend's Book 4 section of the November sale saw 532 horses sell for $19,112,800. The average of $35,926 was up 3.4% from 2021, while the median remained constant at $25,000.

During last year's two-session Book 4, 582 horses sold for $20,220,000. The section average was $34,742 and the median was $25,000.

As the November sale marched into its second week, Seitz said there was still plenty of activity on the sales grounds.

“It still feels great,” he said. “The foals especially have been out constantly with lots of showing. And even the mares are getting plenty of action.”

The November sale continues through Wednesday and is followed by a horses of racing age sale Thursday. Bidding begins daily at 10 a.m.

Vekoma Filly Tops KEENOV Book 4 Opener

A filly from the first crop of MGISW Vekoma (Candy Ride {Arg}) (Hip 2205) shot to the top of the class late in Saturday's opening session of Book 4 of the Keeneland November Sale, bringing $215,000 from Frankie's Stable.

Consigned by Grovendale Sales, she was bred by William Humphries and Altair Farms. The chestnut is out of Truckstop Diamond (Flat Out), a half-sister to SW & GISP Meadow Dance (Jimmy Creed).

“She is a superstar physical,” said Grovendale's Chance Timm. “Those kind bring a premium and breakout.”

This is the first crop for GI Carter H. and GI Met Mile winner Vekoma, who stands at Spendthrift Farm.

“It is surprising how much leg and scope they have,” Timm said of the Vekoma weanlings. “This filly has a lot of leg underneath her and great length. She has a beautiful profile, more so than you would think for the sire line.”

The day's top mare was the 3-year-old Street Slayer (Street Sense) (Hip 2166), purchased by JCB Stables for $170,000. Selling as a broodmare prospect, the bay is a half to GSW Biddy Duke (Bayern).

A total of 246 horses changed hands during the sixth session of Keeneland November for a gross of $9,596,900. During the equivalent session last year, 271 head brought $10,507,100. The average was up a tick from $38,772 in 2021 to $39,012 and the median increased from $26,000 to $30,000. The RNA rate was also up from 18.37% to 23.84%

Through the first six days of selling 1,287 horses have summoned $192,033,900, a large increase from last year when 1,391 head brought $176,713,100. Average increased from $127,040 in 2021 to $149,210 and the median was also up from $75,000 to $77,000. The RNA rate was 20.42% for 2021, but is up to 25.09% this year so far.

“It has definitely slowed down a bit here in Book 4 compared to earlier in the week,” Timm said. “It just doesn't have as much traffic as you'd like to see, but same story. When you lead ones up like that, you can't hide them. Everybody's there for them.”

The Keeneland November Sale continues through Wednesday with sessions starting at 10 a.m. It will be followed by a single-session Horses of Racing Age Sale Thursday.
