Mozu Akabosu Going For Two Straight at Tokyo

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. AIR ANEMOI (c, 4, Point of Entry–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) broke his maiden on debut over this course and distance in December 2021 (video, SC 9) and went missing after finishing down the field in Group 3 company early last season. The homebred is one of five winners from five to race from his ultra-productive dam, who also boasts GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), SW Air Fanditha (Hat Trick {Jpn}), three-time winner Air Sage (Point of Entry) and the promising 3-year-old colt Air Meteora (Goldencents). Nokaze is a half-sister to the stakes-winning dam of GSW Yuugiri (Shackleford). B-Sekie & Tsunebumi Yoshihara (KY)

KISS ON THE CHEEK (JPN) (f, 3, Curlin–Eskimo Kisses, by To Honor and Serve), whose GI Alabama S.-winning dam was sold to Shadai Farm for $2.3 million with this filly in utero at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale, got her career off on a high note with a two-length victory in a nine-furlong newcomers' event at Chukyo Jan. 15 (video, SC 4). Eskimo Kisses, who was also second in the GI Central Bank Ashland S. and GII Fair Grounds Oaks in 2018, is a granddaughter of GI Kentucky Derby heroine Winning Colors (Caro {Ire}). MOZU AKABOSU (c, 3, Quality Road–India, by Hennessy), a half-brother to connections' February S. and G1 Yasuda Kinen winner Mozu Ascot (Frankel {GB}), broke his maiden at first asking going this distance at Chukyo Jan. 28 (video, SC 5) and was given an entry for Sunday's Listed Hyacinth S., but opts for this one-win allowance test. A $200,000 Keeneland September purchase, Mozu Akabosu is out of a half-sister to the dam of MGISW To Honor and Serve (Bernardini) and GISW Angela Renee (Bernardini). 5th-TOK, ¥11,850,000, Newcomers, 3yo, 1600m
GIUOCO PIANO (c, 3, Justify–Haddie Be Good, by Silver Deputy), a $400,000 OBS March acquisition by Katsumi Yoshida, is the latest foal to make the races out of a two-time stakes-winning dam who has already accounted for SW Story To Tell (Bluegrass Cat) and was bought back on a bid of $290,000 with this colt in utero at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. The Feb. 17 foal, whose female family also includes GI La Brea S. winner Sam's Sister (Brother Derek), will carry the silks of Kazumi Yoshida and is to be ridden by the visiting Theo Bachelot. Keeneland Moves Date of April Sale

Keeneland will hold its 2023 April Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale this year on Sunday, Apr. 30 beginning at 4 p.m. ET. Entry deadline for the print version of the April Sale catalog is Monday, Apr. 3 and approved supplemental entries will be accepted until the sale.

Keeneland successfully held its April Selected Sale last year on closing day of the Spring Meet, and the sale will return to that position on the calendar in 2024. This year's move to Sunday is a one-time event to avoid conflict with the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale.

The April Selected Sale feeds off the energy and excitement of the Spring Meet and gives horsemen a terrific opportunity to cash in on or buy quality individuals, especially those who run well at Keeneland, as they transition to summer racing,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said. “While we feel closing day remains the ideal position for the April Sale, the shift to Sunday this year still allows us to properly showcase these horses before attention moves to Louisville and Kentucky Derby Week. We look forward to resuming the sale's Spring Meet closing-day schedule in 2024 and beyond.”

Grading the TDN Rising Stars: Class of 2019

While no singular superstar emerged from this class numbering just 60, the top-to-bottom quality separates this class from its counterparts.

MGISW Guarana (Ghostzapper) was the only 'TDN Rising Star' to win multiple Grade I events in 2019. She posted three consecutive victories that year, going straight from her maiden-breaking score at Keeneland to the GI Acorn S., where she defeated GI Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress (Alternation) and future Eclipse champion Ce Ce (Elusive Quality), and then to Saratoga's GI Coaching Club American Oaks. Second only to GISW Street Band (Istan) in her final start of the year, the GI Cotillion S., Guarana returned in 2020 to score once more at the highest level, retiring a winner back where she started in Keeneland's GI Madison S.

With a final record of 6-5-1-0 and earnings of $1,078,268, Guarana wasn't done making headlines just yet, going on to bring a final bid of $4.4 million from Hill 'n' Dale's John Sikura at the Fasig-Tipton Night of the Stars Sale in November 2021. She produced a colt by leading general sire Into Mischief in 2022 and was bred to a fellow Hill 'n' Dale great in Charlatan for 2023.

A further eight 'Rising Stars' from 2019 would find success at the Grade I level including elevated GI Kentucky Derby winner and current Darby Dan stallion Country House (Lookin At Lucky), GI American Pharoah S. winner Eight Rings (Empire Maker), WinStar stallion Global Campaign (Curlin), himself the half-brother to 2022 leading first-crop sire Bolt d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro), and Valid Point (Scat Daddy). A quartet of fillies, many of whom brought big sales numbers upon their retirement, joined this group: Hard Not To Love (Hard Spun), who sold to Gainesway and Whisper Hill Farm for $3.2 million while pregnant to Curlin, Sharing (Speightstown), Wicked Whisper (Liam's Map), who brought $2,9 million from Whisper Hill Farm also in foal to Curlin, and Wesley Ward's millionaire Kimari (Munnings) who sold at the same Fasig-Tipton Night of the Stars Sale for $2.7 million to Coolmore's M.V. Magnier.

Another eight horses achieved graded-stakes success highlighted by GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies runner up Donna Veloce (Uncle Mo), who sold in foal to Tiz the Law for $1.9 million at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Night of the Stars Sale, and Frank's Rockette who finished 2022 strong with a win in the GIII Sugar Swirl S. at Gulfstream Dec. 31. GII Risen Star S. winner Mr. Monomoy (Palace Malice), a half-brother to dual Eclipse champion Monomoy Girl (Tapizar), and GIII Iroquois S. victor Dennis' Moment (Tiznow) both found their best form as 2-year-olds in 2019 while Magic Star (Scat Daddy) entered the graded-stakes ranks with a win in the 2020 GIII Marshua's River S.

Amongst those who competed at the stakes level, Canadian champion 3-year-old Desert Ride (ON) (Candy Ride {Arg}) took wins in two of the three legs of the Canadian Triple Tiara, the Woodbine Oaks and the Wonder Where S. Others include the ill-fated dual-stakes winning filly Taraz (Into Mischief), GI Santa Anita Oaks runner up Flor de La Mar (Tiznow) and MGISP Shoplifted (Into Mischief).

Other names to note include a pair of foals by Constitution in MGISP Gouverneur Morris, a factor in the 2019 Road to the Kentucky Derby, and MGISP Golden Principal, who did her best racing as a 3 and 4-year-old.

In total, 9/60 (15%) 'TDN Rising Stars' of 2019 would achieve success at the Grade I level. 8/60 (14%) won graded-stakes races, 18/60 (30%) were stakes winners, 10/60 (16%) placed at the graded-stakes level, 3/60 (5%) placed at the stakes level, and only 12/60 (20%) did not reach black-type status.

Champion Caledonia Road’s First Foal Debuts at Tokyo

ERIKA BONITA (f, 3, Justify–Caledonia Road, by Quality Road) is the first foal out of her dam, whose upset victory in the 2017 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies propelled her to Eclipse Awards honors that season. Purchased by Narvick International, agent, for $2.3 million at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, Caledonia Road–a half-sister to MGSW Officiating (Blame) and SW One of a Kind (Lemon Drop Kid)–was bred to this Triple Crown winner on an early cover and foaled this filly in Kentucky on Jan. 20, 2020. Put back in foal to Justify soon after, she was exported to Japan and the colt that she produced Jan. 27, 2021 fetched ¥135 million ($1,223,338) at the JHRA Select Sales less than six months later. The current yearling out of Caledonia Road sold for $800,000 at the same event last July. B-Grand Stud (KY)

FUJIMASA GOOD (c, 3, Good Samaritan–Beverage Queen, by Indygo Shiner), a $45,000 in-utero purchase by JS Company at Keeneland November in 2019, is out of half-sister to US champion Ria Antonia (Rockport Harbor), herself a $1.8-million FTKNOV graduate and the dam of Japanese Group 3 victress Ria Amelia (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).
