Keeneland Digital Select Horses Racing Age Catalog Online

The catalog for Keeneland’s online Select Horses of Racing Age Sale June 23 is now available at keenelanddigital.comor. The sale will be presented via the new Keeneland Digital Sales Ring platform.

The catalog features 34 horses, among them Grade II-placed Tempers Rising (Bayern). Other offerings include GSP Surf and Turf (Kitten’s Joy); GSW Ballagh Rocks (Stormy Atlantic); Juror (Tapit), second in his career debut at Tampa Bay June 1; Frills (Candy Ride {Arg}), won her last start in March at Turfway; undefeated Wondrwherecraigis (Munnings); Queen Arella (Speightster), who won her career debut by four lengths at Gulfstream; and Eloquent Speaker (Flatter), who won her maiden at Belmont June 12.

Bidding begins at 9 a.m. ET on sale day. Bidding closes on Hip 1 at 2 p.m. and then at increments of approximately every two minutes on subsequent hips.

Catalog Available For Keeneland’s Online Select Horses Of Racing Age Sale

The catalog for Keeneland's online Select Horses of Racing Age Sale, to be held Tuesday, June 23, via the new Keeneland Digital Sales Ring platform, is now available at keenelanddigital.com or by clicking here.

The catalog features 34 horses, among them Tempers Rising, a 3-year-old filly by Bayern who finished second in the Grade 2 TwinSpires.com Fair Grounds Oaks on March 21 at Fair Grounds. Tempers Rising is currently ranked 12th with 47 points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard.

Other notable offerings include:

Surf and Turf, a 4-year-old Grade 3-placed son of Kitten's Joy;
Ballagh Rocks, a Grade 3-winning son of Stormy Atlantic;
Juror, a Juddmonte Farms homebred 3-year-old colt by Tapit who was second in his career debut at Tampa Bay on June 1;
Frills, a 4-year-old Candy Ride (ARG) filly who won her last start in March at Turfway;
Wondrwherecraigis, an undefeated 3-year-old son of Munnings;
Queen Arella, a 2-year-old Speightster filly who won her career debut by four lengths at Gulfstream in late May; and
Eloquent Speaker, a 3-year-old filly by Flatter who won her maiden at Belmont on June 12.

Buyers may browse the offerings and digitally inspect each horse via photos and video. Ragozin and Thorograph sheets are among the assets also provided.

Buyers have two options for bidding on the day of the sale:

Direct Bid allows you to bid manually as you go.
Max Bid establishes a top price that you are willing to pay for a hip. As the bidding progresses, the software will automatically bid on your behalf as you are outbid up to your maximum.

Ellis Park Given Approval for July 2 Start

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a July 2 start to the Ellis Park racing season. The meet had originally been scheduled to begin June 28 and Tuesday’s vote also approved the extension of the Churchill Downs meeting by one day to now end on the 28th.

Ellis Park general manager Jeff Inman said the track had requested the delay to have more time to institute all the safety protocols involved with staging horse racing in the COVID-19 era. Ellis Park is making up for not running June 28 by adding July 2, a date it originally had not planned to run.

“It’s win-win for everybody, including the state and Kentucky horsemen picking up an additional day of racing,” Inman said.

Ellis Park will now run July 2-5, then be dark the following week to allow Keeneland to run July 8-12. Ellis then resumes its Friday-Sunday schedule on July 17, running through Aug. 30.

Man in the Can to Target Blue Grass

Jrita Young Thoroughbreds’ Man in the Can (Can the Man) will be aimed at the July 11 GII Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland following his allowance score as the 5-2 favorite at Churchill Friday (video).

“That sure was an impressive turn of foot,” trainer Ron Moquett said of his charge’s 1 1/2-length victory in the nine-furlong event. “I wasn’t expecting him to go off as that big of a favorite, but he ran against some stiff Arky-bred competition in his last couple of starts at Oaklawn. I think the bettors saw that before the race and that’s why he ended up going off favorite. He definitely deserves a shot in the Blue Grass. There have been so many top Kentucky Derby contenders that have gone off the trail this week that it’s really anyone’s game.”

A debut winner at Remington Park last December, Man in the Can defeated fellow Arkasas-breds to win the six-furlong Rainbow S. Apr. 17 and the 1 1/16-mile Arkansas Breeders’ Champions S. May 1.

The rescheduled Blue Grass will award the top four finishers 100-40-20-10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Should Man in the Can qualify for the Sept. 5 GI Kentucky Derby, he would become the first Arkansas-bred to run in the race since Barbizon Streak, who finished 16th in 1971.

Bruce Lunsford’s Art Collector (Bernardini) was another promising 3-year-old allowance winner at Churchill last week. The colt, an off-the-pace 2 3/4-length winner of a seven-furlong allowance in Louisville May 17, was a front-running 6 1/2-length victor going 1 1/16 miles Saturday (video).

“He’s certainly getting better at the right time,” trainer Tommy Drury said. “That is as impressive as it gets to kick clear as he did. I asked Bruce to let us enjoy this one for a couple of days and then we’d get together and talk about our next options.”
