Jockey Martin Garcia Tests Positive For Coronavirus, Remains Asymptomatic

The Daily Racing Form reported Wednesday that jockey Martin Garcia has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, according to his agent.

Garcia, who has experienced no symptoms of COVID-19, learned of the results from a routine test administered in preparation for him to ride at Keeneland while he was en route to Indiana Grand to ride a stakes race on the Wednesday evening card.

Agent Jay Fedor told writer Matt Hegarty that Garcia turned around and will return to Kentucky for a state mandated 14-day quarantine period. Fedor said a previous routine test at Churchill Downs was negative.

Over the past month, Garcia has ridden at Churchill Downs, Ellis Park, Indiana Grand, Los Alamitos, and Prairie Meadows.

American Pharoah’s Maven too Fast for Them at Keeneland

8th-Keeneland, $79,935, Alw, 7-8, 3yo, 5 1/2fT, 1:03.02, gd.
MAVEN (c, 3, American Pharoah–Richies Party Girl {MSW, $357,085}, by Any Given Saturday), the less fancied of a pair of Wesley Ward runners at 3-1, turned this event into a one-horse affair for a barn that wins more than its fair share of sprints on the Lexington lawn. A debut winner while earning a strong 84 Beyer Speed Figure in April of his 2-year-old season, the chestnut traveled overseas to annex Chantilly’s G3 Prix du Bois that June. He had been off since finishing 10th in Goodwood’s G3 Molecomb S. July 31, but showed some upbeat drills over the local turf for this. Hard ridden to seize command early, Maven doled out an opening quarter of :21.62 as his stakes-winning female stablemate Cambria (Speightstown) was forced to take up sharply around the turn. Maven continued into the lane unopposed and, despite never switching leads, streaked home 2 3/4 lengths to the good of of big longshot Johnny Unleashed (Colonel John). Cambria never recovered from the trouble and checked in 10th. The winner is the lone registered foal out of Richies Party Girl, who took the 2013 Juvenile Turf Sprint on Breeders’ Cup weekend and added two more turf sprint stakes the following season. Sales history: £725,000 RNA 2yo ’19 GOFLON. Lifetime Record: GSW-Fr, 4-3-0-0, $143,488.  Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.

Report: Martin Garcia Tests Positive for COVID-19

Jockey Martin Garcia has tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced to miss his scheduled ride aboard Miss T Too (Into Mischief) for trainer Bill Mott in Wednesday night’s GIII Indiana Oaks. Daily Racing Form was first to report the news after speaking to Garcia’s agent Jay Fedor. Garcia was replaced by Julien Leparoux.

DRF said that Garcia, who had ridden at Ellis Park, Los Alamitos and Prairie Meadows in the last seven days, was tested Tuesday at Keeneland, a requirement to ride at the meeting which began Wednesday afternoon. Garcia rode at Churchill Downs for most of the month of June, DRF reported, but tested negative at that time. Fedor told DRF that Garcia was not displaying any of the coronavirus symptoms.

Grade 1 Winners Guarana, Mia Mischief Top Field For Keeneland’s Madison

Grade 1 winners Guarana and Mia Mischief head a field of nine fillies and mares for Saturday's 19th running of the $250,000 Madison (G1) that will be run over 7 furlongs on the main track at Keeneland.

The Madison, the first of three Grade 1 races on Saturday's 10-race program, will go as the afternoon's fifth race with a 3:18 p.m. post time.

Three Chimneys Farm and Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings Guarana debuted at Keeneland during the 2019 Spring Meet with a 14¾-length victory that was a springboard to Grade 1 victories in the Acorn and Coaching Club of America Oaks.

A dominating winner in her 2020 debut last month at Churchill Downs, Guarana is trained by Chad Brown and will be ridden Jose Ortiz from post position five.

Stonestreet Stables' Mia Mischief, who broke her maiden in her second start by 16¼ lengths during Keeneland's 2017 Fall Meet, won the Humana Distaff (G1) in 2019 at Churchill Downs. A winner of two of three starts in 2020, Mia Mischief is trained by Steve Asmussen and will be ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr., from post position seven.

Other runners of note include Lothenbach Stables' Bell's the One and Novogratz Racing Stables' Amy's Challenge.

Trained by Neil Pessin, Bell's the One captured last fall's Lexus Raven Run (G2) at Keeneland and most recently won the Winning Colors (G3) at Churchill Downs. Corey Lanerie, who was aboard for both of those victories, has the mount Saturday and will break from post position eight.

Amy's Challenge, trained by Mac Robertson, finished second by a neck to Spiced Perfection in last year's Madison. Joel Rosario has the mount Saturday and will break from post nine.

The field for the Madison, with riders and weights from the rail out, is: Diamond Crazy (Brian Hernandez Jr., 118 pounds), Wildwood's Beauty (Joe Rocco Jr., 118), Sally's Curlin (Joe Talamo, 118), Princess Causeway (Julien Leparoux, 118) Guarana (Ortiz, 118), Unique Factor (Flavien Prat, 118), Mia Mischief (Santana Jr., 118), Bell's the One (Lanerie, 120), Amy's Challenge (Rosario, 118).
