Friday’s Insights: Full-Brother to Constitution Debuts at Belmont

Bridledwood Farm and Don Alberto’s homebred CONSTITUTIONAL LAW (Tapit), a full-brother to multiple Grade I winner Constitution, debuts for trainer Todd Pletcher. Bridlewood and Don Alberto partnered to purchase the gray colt’s dam Baffled (Distorted Humor), in foal to Tapit, for $3.5 million at the 2016 Fasig November sale. Don Alberto bought out the parnership for $1.8 million at last year’s Fasig November sale. The mare’s yearling filly by Medaglia d’Oro sold to Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm for $1.1 million at last month’s Keeneland September sale.

Pletcher also saddles Chuck Fipke’s homebred firster Morethansoultitle (More Than Ready). The chestnut is out of a half-sister to graded winner Seeking the Title (Seeking the Gold), dam of Grade I winner Seeking the Soul (Perfect Soul {Ire}).

Shug McGaughey sends out Courtlandt Farm’s Ten for Ten (Frosted), a $410,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, who stretches out following a runner-up effort in his six-furlong debut Sept. 7 at Saratoga. TJCIS PPs

Equibase Analysis: Reagan’s Edge Leads Strong Field In Raven Run

The Grade 2, $200,000 Lexus Raven Run Stakes at Keeneland is usually a showcase of some of the top filly sprinters in North America, and this year's edition is no exception. Four of the 10 entered are graded stakes winners, with another four having finished in-the-money in graded stakes so far in their careers.

In terms of career earnings, Finite leads the group with over $650,000 in the bank, most of it earned winning the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes in February. Venetian Harbor won the Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes in February and enters this race off a fine second behind Gamine in the Grade 1 Test Stakes. Tonalist's Shape brings a six-for-nine record with her including a win in the Grade 2 Davona Dale Stakes in February and she had significant traffic trouble in the Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks in her most recent race.

Four Graces won the Grade 3 Beaumont Stakes at this distance at Keeneland in July and was most recently second in the Grade 2 Eight Belles Stakes. Never Forget finished third in the Eight Belles and hopes to improve, as does Grade 2 Prioress Stakes fourth place finisher Secondary Market. Fair Maiden just missed in the Grade 1 Natalma Stakes 13 months ago and won following 10 months off in September so could get back to stakes quality form.

Grand Cru Classe won the Weber City Miss Stakes last month and is racing in a graded stakes for the first time. Reagan's Edge hasn't won a stakes race yet but finished second in the Grade 2 Prioress Stakes in her most recent start. Secret Keeper also finished second last time out, in the Grade 3 Torrey Pines Stakes, and these two appear to be strong contenders in a very deep field.

Reagan's Edge has finished second in two straight stakes races to Frank's Rockette, arguably the top 3-year-old filly sprinter in North America. Frank's Rockette would be the prohibitive favorite here and since she's not running in this race, Reagan's Edge is going to be tough to beat. She's earned 105 and 103 Equibase Speed Figures in her last two races, the lowest of which is higher than any other horse's last two figures. We call this a “Double Advantage” and that's another reason Reagan's Edge gets top billing as a win contender, because it means other horses in the field have to improve significantly to run faster to beat this filly.

Secret Keeper won the first two starts of her career with 90 then 96 figures. In her third start she improved to a 98 figure when second in the Torrey Pines Stakes to Harvest Moon, who then improved seven points to win the Grade 1 Zenyatta Stakes. If Secret Keeper continues her pattern and moves up like Harvest Moon did, she's going to run as fast as a 105 figure, which is as good as Reagan's Edge earned in the best of her last two starts. As such, Secret Keeper must be considered as logical to win this year's Lexus Raven Run Stakes as Reagan's Edge.

Four Graces won the similar Grade 3 Beaumont Stakes at this seven furlong trip at the July Keeneland meeting, earning a 99 figure, then improved again to career-best 102 figure effort when second in the Eight Belles Stakes last month. Excluding the one race in which she tried to run farther than this seven furlong distance, Four Graces has won four races and finished second in the other so deserves a lot of respect in this year's Raven Run Stakes.

The rest of the field, with their best Equibase Speed Figures, is Fair Maiden (100), Finite (101), Grand Cru Classe (92), Never Forget (98), Secondary Market (99), Tonalist's Shape (95) and Venetian Harbor (106).

Belmont Partners With Keeneland For Saturday Cross Country Pick 5

Saturday's Cross Country Pick 5 will feature action from Belmont Park and Keeneland Race Course in a wager hosted by the New York Racing Association, Inc.

Keeneland will start the action in Race 7 at 4:24 p.m. Eastern with a maiden contest for juvenile fillies going seven furlongs. Willful Woman, a $400,000 purchase at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton New York Select Sale, has been training at Keeneland ahead of her anticipated debut for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. Trainer Tom Amoss will send out a pair with Miss Dial and Wicked Bisou as part of a 12-horse field.

Belmont gets in on the action with the 80,000 Floral Park in Race 9 at 4:47 p.m. Graded stakes-winner Mitchell Road will get her first career test at Belmont when she competes as part of a full 13-horse field for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up contesting six furlongs on the Widener turf course. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, Mitchell Road enters off a runner-up effort in the Grade 3 Kentucky Downs Ladies on September 12. Rose Flower, a German bred who has gone 1-0-2 in four starts since arriving from Europe last year for trainer Christophe Clement, will look for class relief after running sixth in the Grade 3 Intercontinental on June 6 over a yielding Belmont turf.

Action will again alternate to Keeneland for the third leg in Race 8 at 4:57 p.m. when a full field of 12 3-year-olds and up will run at nine furlongs on the turf in an allowance tilt. Trainer Mike Maker will send out a pair in Temple and Apreciado. Conditioner Jack Sisterson will also saddle multiple graded-stakes placed Ritzy A.P., who will break from the inside post.

Belmont's second and final leg will be the card's 10th-race finale, where 10 New York-bred fillies and mares 3-years-old and up will compete over seven furlongs on Big Sandy at 5:20 p.m. Jc's Shooting Star, a stakes-winner who also bested allowance company on August 16 at Saratoga, drew the far outside post for trainer David Donk. Playtone, second in last year's Key Cents at Aqueduct Racetrack, will go for trainer George Weaver.

The Grade 2, $200,000 Raven Run in Keeneland's Race 9 at 5:30 p.m. will close the curtain on the Cross Country Pick 5, with 10 sophomore fillies vying for supremacy going seven furlongs on the main track in Race 9. Graded stakes-winners Venetian Harbor and Four Graces will look for additional blacktype in a race that could set up a spot in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on November 7 at the same Lexington track. Nine of the field's entrants are either graded-placed or stakes winners.

Trained by Richard Baltas, Venetian Harbor won the Grade 2 Las Virgenes in February at Santa Anita Park and has run second in three straight graded stakes, falling just short to divisional leaders Swiss Skydiver, Speech and Gamine.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

Antoinette Tops Loaded Field in Valley View

Godolphin homebred Antoinette (Hard Spun) headlines a large and talented field in Friday’s renewal of the GIII Pin Oak Valley View S. at Keeneland. Third in the GI CCA Oaks on the Saratoga main track, the Bill Mott pupil captured the Saratoga Oaks when getting back on grass next out Aug. 16. She led the way in the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational S. Sept. 19, but was run down late by Magic Attitude (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and forced to settle for second.

The Chad Brown-trained Duopoly (Animal Kingdom) has not tested stakes waters before, but is proven at this distance. Earning her diploma by five lengths at Monmouth going 1 1/16 miles July 3, she wired an allowance going the same distance at Saratoga Aug. 21, earning an 86 Beyer Speed Figure.

Also making her black-type bow here is the undefeated Princess Grace (Karakontie {Jpn}). Romping in her Colonial Downs unveiling Aug. 2, the dark bay repeated in a one-mile test at Monmouth Park Sept. 5.

Several runners from the Sept. 4 GII Edgewood S.–won by GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine Sharing (Speightstown)–return here, including fourth-place finisher In Good Spirits (Ghostzapper), who also finished third in the GIII Regret S. Other contenders exiting the Edgewood are third-place Lucky Betty (Munnings); fifth-place Pranked (Into Mischief); and sixth-place Walk in Marrakesh (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), who came up a nose short in the July 11 GII Appalachian S.

Another contender worth a look here is the Ian Wilkes-trained Witez (More Than Ready), who rallied from well back to be a close third in the GIII Lake George S. Aug. 28. Prior to that, the bay captured an allowance at Saratoga July 26.
