Keeneland Announces COVID-19 Protocols For November Sale

Keeneland's COVID-19 protocols for the November Sale will remain consistent with the September Yearling Sale with a few adjustments as a result of the Breeders' Cup. Please make note of these key items:

  • Access to the Keeneland grounds will be limited to credentialed sales participants. Credentials may be requested through the Virtual Badge app as you did in September. Please re-apply for your credential for the November Sale from Oct. 28 onward, and note that credentials from the September Sale will not carry over to November.
  • COVID-19 testing will again be required for all consignors, veterinarians, farriers, media, Keeneland employees and essential staff within 10 days of your first entry to the grounds. Keeneland will provide testing at various dates for your convenience. Buyers are not required to receive a COVID-19 test but will pass through a daily health screening at the gates. Testing dates are as follows:
    • Oct. 28-29 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • November 2-3 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • On Breeders' Cup event days (Nov. 6-7), a parking credential will be required to access the grounds in addition to your November Sale Virtual Badge credential. Keeneland will be in contact with buyers and sellers in the coming days to provide instructions on how to request these parking credentials.
Should you have any questions on this front, please reach out to credentialing@keeneland.com.

Keeneland Releases November Sale COVID-19 Protocols

To ensure the health and safety of participants, Keeneland has released its protocols surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic for its November sale, which will be held Nov. 9-18. Many of the protocols will be similar to the ones in place for the Keeneland September sale, but a few adjustments have been made in light of the Breeders’ Cup being held on the grounds Nov. 6-7. Requirements are as follows:

  • Access to the grounds is limited to credentialed attendees only. Credentials are accessible from the Virtual Badge app beginning Oct. 28. Those who had a credential in September must reapply, as they will not carry forward.
  • Proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 10 days of first entry onto the Keeneland grounds is required for all consignors and their staff, as well as for veterinarians, farriers, media, van representatives, Keeneland staff, and any other essential employees. Keeneland will provide on-site testing for any credentialed sales participants Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 2-3, although a negative test from elsewhere will also suffice.
  • Buyers, owners, and agents will not be required to show proof of a negative COVID test, but will be required to complete a health questionnaire and have a daily temperature check.
  • All participants are required to wear a face covering and maintain social distancing at all times.
  • On the days of the Breeders’ Cup, a parking credential is required in addition to the Virtual Badge credential.

Red Knight Cruises To Stakes-Record Victory In Thursday’s Sycamore

Trinity Farm's homebred Red Knight surged to the front at midstretch and cruised to a 2-length victory over Postulation to win the 26th running of the $150,000 Sycamore (G3) for 3-year-olds and up on an overcast Thursday afternoon at Keeneland.

Trained by Bill Mott and ridden by James Graham, Red Knight covered the 1½ miles on a firm turf course in 2:28.81 to smash the stakes record of 2:29.55 established by Sharbayan (IRE) in 2003. It is the third victory in the Sycamore for Graham, who won in 2007 aboard Transduction Gold and 2013 on Najjaar.

Postulation led the field of 10 through fractions of :24.84, :51.08, 1:16.04 and 1:40.76 while Red Knight raced near the back of the pack.

On the far turn, Graham angled Red Knight off the rail and began splitting horses. He swung three wide into the stretch, collared Postulation at the eighth pole and drew clear for the victory.

“I saw what was happening around me,” Graham said. “Manny (Franco on Ziyad [GB]) moved out around the backside. Brian (Hernandez)'s horse (Eons) started to come out under pressure, and I split two horses and (Red Knight) came right back on the bridle, which was great. And then he accelerated turning for home. Everything went great. He was probably 2 lengths further back than I wanted to be, but it worked out.”

It was the first graded stakes victory for Red Knight, a 6-year-old New York-bred son of Pure Prize out of the Skip Away mare Isabel Away. The victory was worth $90,000 and increased his earnings to $732,158 with a record of 21-8-6-1.

Sent off as the favorite, Red Knight returned $6.80, $4 and $3. Postulation, ridden by Julien Leparoux, returned $6.80 and $4.20 and finished a head in front of Ziyad (GB) who paid $3.40 to show under Manny Franco.

It was another head back to North Dakota who was followed in order by He's No Lemon, Big Agenda, Aquaphobia, Eons, Split the Wickets and Morning Stride.

Racing continues Friday with a 10-day program beginning at 1:05 p.m. ET and featuring the 30th running of the $150,000 Pin Oak Valley View (G3) for 3-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles on the turf. The Pin Oak Valley View will be run as the ninth race with a 5:30 p.m. post time.

Siberian Iris Stays In Kentucky For Sunday’s Dowager Stakes

Calumet Farm's Siberian Iris (IRE), second against the boys this summer in the San Juan Capistrano (G3) at Santa Anita, tops a field of six fillies and mares entered Thursday for Sunday's 29th running of the $125,000 Rood & Riddle Dowager (G3) at Keeneland.

The 1½-mile grass test, the final stakes race of the Fall Meet, is scheduled as the eighth race on Sunday's nine-program with a 4:57 p.m. ET post time. First post Sunday is 1:05 p.m.

Trained by Richard Mandella, Siberian Iris stayed at Keeneland following a fifth-place finish in the TVG Stakes at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 15. She worked a half-mile on Keeneland's all-weather training track in :50.80 Thursday morning.

Florent Geroux will have the mount and break from post position five.

The unknown commodity in the race is Brownwood Farm's Naomi Broadway (BRZ), who was supplemented into the race.

Trained by Paulo Lobo, Naomi Broadway made her U.S. debut Sept. 28 at Indiana Grand, where she finished third going a mile in her first start in more than 10 months. A Group 1 winner in Brazil with four other Group 1 or 2 placings, Naomi Broadway will be ridden by Joe Talamo and break from post six.

The field for the Rood & Riddle Dowager, with riders and weights from the inside, is: With Dignity (Julien Leparoux, 121 pounds), Blame Debbie (Manny Franco, 118), Over Thinking (Rafael Bejarano, 121), Always Shopping (Tyler Gaffalione, 121), Siberian Iris (IRE) (Geroux, 121) and Naomi Broadway (BRZ) (Talamo, 121).
