Churchill Downs To Welcome Back Fans When Fall Meet Starts On Oct. 25

The Kentucky horse racing circuit shifts from Keeneland in Lexington to Churchill Downs in Louisville on Sunday as the historic home of the Kentucky Derby readies to open its 131^st Fall Meet with an 11-race program – all for promising 2-year-old Thoroughbreds – at 1 p.m. (all times Eastern).

The popular 24-day stand covers a five-week stretch every Wednesday-Sunday through Nov. 29, with the exception of Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7 when the Breeders' Cup World Championships return to Keeneland.

The Fall Meet kicks off in style Sunday with the 16^th annual “Stars of Tomorrow I” program, which is entirely devoted to hopeful 2-year-old stars that have aspirations of trail-blazing their way to next year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (GI) and Longines Kentucky Oaks (GI).

Sunday's 11-race opening day card is headlined by the eighth runnings of two 1 1/16 miles, $98,000-added overnight stakes – the open-company Street Sense and Rags to Riches for fillies. Those races serve as local steppingstones to the two Grade II, $200,000, 1 1/16-mile counterparts on the Saturday, Nov. 28 “Stars of Tomorrow II” program – the open Kentucky Jockey Club and Golden Rod for fillies that are part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks series which award points to the Top 4 finishers (10-4-2-1).

Churchill Downs Welcomes Back Guests

Sunday's Fall Meet opener will mark the first time this year that spectators can return to Churchill Downs for live racing. Churchill Downs will continue to follow the COVID-19 health and safety protocols for Venues and Events as mandated by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Last year's average daily attendance during the Fall Meet was 4,200 guests, and less spectators are expected this year. Reserved outdoor box seats as well as select indoor premium areas will be open with proper social distancing at limited capacity per the state's requirements for venues and event spaces.

To facilitate a safe and enjoyable experience, there will be no general admission at the Fall Meet but first floor reserved box seats will be sold at general admission pricing for $5 ($7 on Nov. 27-28). Third floor box seats are $12. Dining options are $39 ($72 on Thanksgiving Day and $49 on Nov. 27-28). Tickets may be purchased online at https://www.churchilldowns.com/tickets/. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Parking is available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.

Temperature checks, medical questionnaires, physical distancing and mandatory face coverings will be required upon entrance and movement within Churchill Downs. An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present.

Breeders’ Cup Partners With Guardian Security To Enhance Equine Safety

The Breeders' Cup, one of Thoroughbred racing's most prestigious international events, today announces a new partnership with Guardian Security, Kentucky's premier security company dedicated to providing around-the-clock security services, to enhance equine safety and security measures for the 2020 Breeders' Cup World Championships. The new agreement reaffirms Breeders' Cup's ongoing commitment to ensuring the highest level of equine safety and integrity standards.

Under the new partnership, Guardian Security will provide 24-hour equine surveillance in the days leading up to, during and following the upcoming World Championships, set to be held at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky. on Nov. 6-7. During this time, over 100 dedicated security officers will be deployed to support the Breeders' Cup Equine Security Team with daily operations by monitoring the activity in the barns, keeping daily logbooks of who enters a stall and bolstering overall stable and racetrack security, to ensure the enforcement of the most comprehensive and exceptional safety and integrity protocols onsite. The combined expertise of the investigative professionals that comprise Breeders' Cup Equine Security Team, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission Investigator team and Guardian Security will provide a safe and level playing field for all participants.

Leinster ‘Doing Much Better’ Ahead Of Return Trip To Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint

Amy Dunne, Brenda Miley, Westrock Stables and Jean Wilkinson's Leinster began serious preparations for a second run in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) by working a half-mile in :49.40 over a turf course labeled good Thursday morning at Keeneland.

Working on his own with Crystal Conning aboard, Leinster recorded fractions of :11.60, :24.80 and :37.40, according to Keeneland clockers.

“Looked good to me,” trainer Rusty Arnold said of Leinster's first work since winning the Woodford (G2) Presented by Keeneland Select on Oct. 3.

Leinster finished seventh last year in the Turf Sprint at Santa Anita.

“Compared to last year at this time, he's doing much better,” said Arnold, who has had 13 Breeders' Cup starters with his first coming in 1996.

“In retrospect, I ran him too much last year. He won the race in New York (the Troy-G3) and that would have been enough to get him in (the Breeders' Cup). Then I ran him at Kentucky Downs and then BACK here in the Woodford, which I shouldn't have done. He didn't run bad (finishing second), but I just think he had lost his edge a little bit.”

In other Thursday works by Breeders' Cup hopefuls:

Ranlo Investments' Golden Pal, who figures to be one of the main players in the $1 million Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2) on Nov. 6, worked 5 furlongs on the turf in 1:02.80 in company with Hat Creek Racing's Illegal Smile (IRE). Golden Pal started 3 lengths in back of Illegal Smile, who is two-time stakes-placed on the turf at Woodbine, and finished a length in front. Both are trained by Wesley Ward.

Working on the fast main track was DARRS Inc.'s Extravagant Kid, who covered a half-mile in :47.80 for trainer Brendan Walsh. Runner-up to Leinster in the Woodford Presented by Keeneland Select, Extravagant Kid also is under consideration for the Turf Sprint.

Also working for Walsh was The Cool Silk Partnership's Midnight Sands, who covered 5 furlongs in 1:00.80. Midnight Sands is under consideration for the $1 million Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1).

David Bernsen and Jeffrey Lambert's Lasting Legacy, under consideration for the $2 million Sprint (G1), worked a half-mile in :47.60 for trainer Bob Hess.

Free Equibase PPs Available For Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5

A packed Cross Country Pick 5 featuring all five races in a 50-minute stretch across four racetracks will highlight Saturday's racing action, with Belmont Park, Keeneland Race Course, Monmouth Park and Woodbine Racetrack all a part of the wager hosted by the New York Racing Association, Inc.

Keeneland will kick off the set with a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint for 3-year-olds and up in Race 7 at 4:24 p.m. Eastern. The jam-packed hour of racing action will see a full field of 12 compete on the Haggin Course. Phast Pharoah, son of Triple Crown-winner American Pharoah, will compete for trainer Anna Meah, while Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen entered American Mandate.

Just five minutes later, Woodbine will add international flair to the wager with an allowance for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up going 7 1/2 furlongs in Race 7 at 4:29 p.m. Hall of Fame conditioner Mark Casse will send out two of the field's eight contenders, with All Quality and the English-bred Jeanie Beach looking to win their first respective race of 2020.

Belmont will host both the third and fourth legs, offering a pair of stakes during the track's Empire Showcase Day featuring some of the best state-breds in action. A 10-horse field of fillies and mares 3-years-old and up will contest at 6 1/2 furlongs over Big Sandy in the $125,000 Iroquois in Race 9 at 4:31 p.m. The Iroquois has been won by owners Chester and Mary Broman the last two years and will look for a third straight with homebred Spin a Yarn, a five-time winner from six starts for trainer Christopher Progno. Other Iroquois contenders include Newly Minted and Prairie Fire, both trained by Linda Rice, as well as Espresso Shot, Timely Tradition, Fair Regis, Officer Hutchy Collegeville Girl, Bertranda and My Roxy Girl.

The showcase race on the eight-stakes card at Belmont will be the penultimate leg, as multiple stakes winners Mr. Buff, Funny Guy and Sea Foam square off in a loaded renewal of the nine-furlong $175,000 Empire Classic for 3-year-olds and up in Race 10 at 5:05 p.m. Chestertown, a $2 million purchase at the March 2019 OBS 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, matched a career-best 85 Beyer Speed Figure last out in a three-quarter length score in the Albany on September 4 at Saratoga.

Monmouth will close the sequence with the first running of the $75,000 Pinot Grigio Handicap for New Jersey-bred fillies and mares 3-years-old and up going 5 ½ furlongs on the turf in Race 11 at 5:12 p.m. Achieving Glory, a winner against allowance company last out on October 3 at Monmouth, will go for trainer Chuck Spina, while Bramble Bay, winner of the Jersey Girl Handicap on July 19 for conditioner Michael Dini, will look to keep her perfect in-the-money record of 3-2-1 in six starts during her 4-year-old campaign intact.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.
