Breeders’ Cup Hopefuls Breeze in Kentucky

A quartet of horses headed towards engagements at the Breeders' Cup World Championships at Del Mar Nov. 6 were out for serious workouts Saturday morning at both major Kentucky venues.

Champion Essential Quality (Tapit) worked five furlongs in the company of Ellis Park allowance winner Colonel Bowman (Curlin) just after the track opened for business shortly after 5:30 Saturday morning. The duo broke off at the half-mile pole, crossing the wire in :46.80 before completing the move around the clubhouse turn in :59.20. Essential Quality outgamed Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow) to take out the GI Runhappy Travers S. in his most recent start and is being trained up to the Classic, for which he figures no worse than the second choice.

“Essential is the type of horse that just keeps finding more in every race,” trainer Brad Cox said. “I thought his race in the Travers was a tremendous effort to run down [Midnight Bourbon]. He's a really nice horse in his own right.

He continued, “The distance in the Classic is not going to be an issue for him. He'll be fit and ready. There wasn't a race in between the Travers and the Classic that made a lot of sense for him to run in. We gave him two easy half-mile works prior to [Saturday] and we'll keep tightening the screws each week.”

The Cox-conditioned Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) turned in an easy half-mile in :50.40 Saturday morning, her first move since winning the GIII Locust Grove S. Sept. 17.

Bell's The One (Majesticperfection), a latest second to Sconsin (Include) in the Sept. 17 Open Mind S., also returned to the tab Saturday morning for trainer Neil Pessin. The 5-year-old, who will look to improve on her third-place effort to Gamine (Into Mischief) in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, went in the company of recent allowance runner-up Audrey's Time (Uncle Mo) and covered a half-mile in :48 (14/131), breaking off five lengths behind her stablemate before joining her on the wire.

Across Interstate 64 at Keeneland Saturday morning, pro-tem divisional leader Letruska (Super Saver) tuned up for the Oct. 10 GI Juddmonte Spinster S. by working five-eighths of a mile in :59 over a fast main track. She was clocked in splits of :22.60, :35.40 and :46.80 before energetically galloping out six furlongs in 1:11.

Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), winner of the 2020 GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, worked five furlongs in 1:01 over the firm turf course in preparation for next Saturday's GII Woodford S. His workmate was the fleet 2-year-old filly Averly Jane (Midshipman), who is ticketed for the Oct. 10 Listed Indian Summer S. en route to a possible appearance in the Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Letruska Makes Easy Work Of Five-Furlong Breeze At Keeneland

“Bueno,” reported exercise rider Felipe Jacobo.

“She did it very easy,” added trainer Fausto Gutierrez.

In a nutshell, that summed up the 5-furlong work in :59 over a fast track Saturday morning for St. George Stable's homebred Letruska, the top-rated mare in North America.

Working on her own at just after 9 a.m. following the morning's second renovation break, Letruska posted fractions of :22.60, :35.40, :46.80, :59 and out 6 furlongs in 1:11 in her final preparations for next Sunday's $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster (G1). The work was the best of 55 at the distance.

For Letruska, this morning's move was her second local work since winning the Personal Ensign (G1) at Saratoga Aug. 28. Last Saturday, Letruska worked a best-of-76 half-mile in :47.40.

In addition to Letruska, several other horses pointing toward Fall Stars Weekend stakes put in main track works headed by Michael McLoughlin's Kevin's Folly, who covered 5 furlongs in :59.40 in company under Edgar Morales for trainer Tom Amoss. Kevin's Folly, third in the Hopeful (G1) in his most recent start, is headed to the $500,000 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) next Saturday.

Also working for Amoss was Jerry Caroom's Pipeline Girl (5 furlongs in :59.80) in preparation for Friday's opening-day $400,000 Darley Alcibiades (G1).

Ranlo Investment's Golden Pal, winner of last fall's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G2), worked 5 furlongs in 1:01 over a firm turf course in company with Indian Summer (L) Presented by Keeneland Select hopeful Averly Jane (1:01.80) in preparation for next Saturday's $200,000 Woodford (G2) Presented by TVG. Averly Jane is owned by Hat Creek Racing.

Golden Pal and Averly Jane were two of five turf workers for trainer Wesley Ward, whose contingent included Indian Summer hopeful Kaufymaker (5 furlongs in 1:02) and multiple Group 1 winner Campanelle (IRE) (5 furlongs in 1:02). Kaufymaker races for Gregory Kaufman. Stonestreet Stables own Campanelle.

Other turf works of note included George Sharp's Front Run the Fed (4 furlongs in :50.80) and Clipper Logistics' Space Traveller (GB) (4 furlongs in :50.40) for the $750,000 Keeneland Turf Mile (G1); Apogee Racing's Abscond (5 furlongs in 1:02) for the $400,000 First Lady (G1) Presented by UK HealthCare; and Phoenix Thoroughbred's Tiz the Bomb (4 furlongs in :49) for the $200,000 Castle & Key Bourbon (G2).

Keeneland Names Four New Members To Board Of Directors

Keeneland today announced four new additions to its Advisory Board of Directors: prominent horsewoman Julie Cauthen, Three Chimneys Farm Chief Commercial Officer Case Clay, Airdrie Stud Vice President Bret Jones, and LNJ Foxwoods' Jaime Roth.

Longtime Directors Seth Hancock of Claiborne Farm and Will Farish of Lane's End will move to Emeritus roles on the Advisory Board.

All four new Directors will began their service at the Advisory Board meeting in October.

“Each of our new directors – Julie, Case, Bret and Jaime – bring a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective on the industry from different vantage points that will be instrumental in guiding Keeneland as we meet the opportunities and challenges of the future,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “We thank them for their service and loyalty to Keeneland.”

Julie Cauthen

Julie Cauthen has served in a variety of positions in the Thoroughbred industry, among them Chief Operating Officer for Donegal Racing, Senior Analyst for EQUIX Biomechanics, Director of Two-Year-Olds in Training Sales for Reynolds Bell Thoroughbred Services and currently as owner of Julia O. Cauthen Bloodstock, specializing in sales selection and purchases, matings and appraisals. At Keeneland, she was Director of Owner and Client Development and is now a member of the September Yearling Sale inspection team. She also serves on the board of Blue Grass Farms Charities. Cauthen grew up in Midway, Kentucky close to Nuckols Farm, which belonged to her grandparents, including former Keeneland Trustee Charlie Nuckols.

Case Clay

Case Clay is Chief Commercial Officer for Three Chimneys Farm, where he works to identify new opportunities for the farm and its customers, and helps to grow its network of relationships and ownership opportunities via joint ventures and partnerships with current and new clients and friends – some for whom he serves as a consultant as well. Clay also worked at both the Irish National Stud and Arrowfield Stud in Australia, and in Chicago at Arlington Park. He currently serves as Board Chairman of KEEP and is a member of the Breeders' Cup.

Bret Jones

Bret Jones is Vice President of Airdrie Stud, and works daily with Airdrie's managerial team and staff to help ensure that Airdrie's legacy will always be that of a farm that does right by its people, horses and clients – a reputation earned by his parents, Brereton and Libby Jones, over the past 50 years. Airdrie is a consignor to the Keeneland sales and stands such stallions as Cairo Prince, Collected and Complexity. A Breeders' Cup Board Director since 2011, Jones served on the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission from 2016-2020 and is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Markey Cancer Foundation.

Jaime Roth

Jaime Roth races horses under her family's LNJ Foxwoods, which was founded in 2012 after years of her following racing as a fan. Along with her parents, Larry and Nanci Roth, she has campaigned two-time champion Covfefe, 2019 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Country House and Grade 1 winners Nickname and Constellation. Roth is a Member of the Breeders' Cup and The Jockey Club and serves on the Board of Directors for Thoroughbred Charities of America. Because advocacy for horse welfare is integral to the stable, LNJ Foxwoods established the Horses First Fund through the TCA and received the Allaire du Pont Leadership Award in 2019.
