Keeneland Expands Spanish Language Coverage of Fall Meet

Keeneland will debut a number of new initiatives for the 2021 Fall Meet, which opens Friday, aimed at broadening coverage and growing viewership among Spanish-speaking fans of Thoroughbred racing. Enhancements include a livestream of Fall Stars Weekend race cards in Spanish, Spanish translation of the Keeneland Race Day App as well as handicapping content and analysis in Spanish on Keeneland.com. Coverage of Keeneland's star-studded Friday, Saturday and Sunday race cards, held Oct. 8-10, will be enhanced with expert analysis and commentary from DRF en Espanol all three days. Breeders' Cup En Vivo, a series of digital handicapping shows covering Breeders' Cup Challenge races across the country produced by America's Best Racing, will take place Saturday and Sunday.

“Keeneland has seen tremendous interest in recent years from our Spanish-speaking audiences in our traditional racing content,” Keeneland Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Christa Marrillia said. “We are excited to work with our partners at the Breeders' Cup, DRF en Espanol and America's Best Racing to provide this valuable content to our Spanish-speaking fans. These outreach efforts are key to growing our fan base and strengthening our sport.”

The daily schedule for Spanish coverage of Fall Stars weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) includes:

10 a.m.–“Keeneland Hoy!,” a 45-minute preview show;
12:30 p.m.–Full race-day coverage begins with live race calls, analysis and interviews in Spanish;
Saturday at 3:45 p.m.–“Breeders' Cup En Vivo” covers the GII Thoroughbred Club of America S., GI First Lady S., GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity and GI Keeneland Turf Mile S.; and
Sunday at 4:45 p.m.–“Breeders' Cup En Vivo” covers the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. and GII Castle & Key Bourbon S.

Fall Stars Weekend coverage

Keeneland, in partnership with DRF en Español, will team with Breeders' Cup En Vivo to offer a livestream in Spanish of the track's entire opening Fall Stars Weekend, which features 10 stakes, nine of which are Breeders' Cup “Win & You're In” races. Talent for these broadcasts will include Roberto Rodriguez, Carlos Morales, David Merida and Ramon Brito; and
Breeders' Cup En Vivo segments: Annise Montplaisir, Darwin Vizcaya, Roberto Rodriguez, Emanuel Aguilar and Claudia Spadaro.

The livestream will be available on Keeneland and Daily Racing Form's Spanish YouTube channels as well as on Keeneland.com and DRF.com/Espanol.

Fans may watch Breeders' Cup En Vivo through both the Breeders' Cup and ABR's Twitter, Facebook and YouTube channels.

Keeneland Race Day App

With nearly 200,000 downloads to date, the hugely popular Keeneland Race Day App will be available in Spanish for the Fall Meet. It is believed to be the first English horse racing app to be translated into Spanish.

Keeneland fans whose native language is set to Spanish on their iPhone or Android devices will soon automatically be able to view and use the Keeneland app in Spanish.

The app includes program details, handicapping selections, live racing, replays and more.

Handicapping analysis

DRF en Español will provide daily handicapping content and analysis in Spanish throughout the Fall Meet via the Expert Picks platform on Keeneland.com.

These Keeneland initiatives extend a partnership that began during the 2020 Fall Meet with the founding of DRF en Español.

Fans again will be able to access Spanish content about Keeneland racing on DRF.com. The fully translated platform will include dedicated Keeneland coverage on DRF.com/Espanol, which features articles and handicapping selections; analysis videos featuring Keeneland racing; and La Referencia and La Guia del Pool of handicapping analysis for Keeneland races during Fall Stars Weekend.

Shannon Arvin Named To The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation Board of Trustees

The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation has appointed Shannon Arvin to its board of trustees, replacing the vacant position left by D.G. Van Clief Jr.

Arvin is president and chief executive officer of Keeneland. She is a member of The Jockey Club and a former member of the law firm Stoll Keenon Ogden (SKO) in Lexington, Kentucky. While at SKO, she represented many Thoroughbred organizations in the industry, including Keeneland, Breeders' Cup Limited, the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association. Arvin has served or currently serves on the boards of Bluegrass Care Navigators (Hospice), Horse Country, The Lexington School, and the University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Foundation. She is also past president of the Thoroughbred Club of America.

“We are delighted to welcome Shannon Arvin to The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation board of directors,” said C. Steven Duncker, the foundation's managing trustee. “Shannon's contributions to the racing industry are well-known, and we are thankful that she will bring her insight, intelligence, and enthusiasm to the task of helping people in need in the horse racing industry. Keeneland to Review Status of Crichton-Trained Runner for Spinster

Having been suspended at Gulfstream for allegedly violating rules regarding the use of clenbuterol, trainer Rohan Crichton may not be able to run his filly Bajan Girl (Speightstown) in the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. to be run Sunday at Keeneland.

Keeneland released a statement Tuesday indicating that it is considering its options.

“We are in the process of obtaining information regarding the reported suspensions from Gulfstream Park so Keeneland is in a position to make an informed decision about race entries,” it read. “As you know, and as is clear from our actions for 85 years, Keeneland continues to work in furtherance of our mission to perpetuate the best in Thoroughbred racing, which definitely includes fair competition and integrity.”

“Right now she's being trained towards her next start,” Crichton told the Daily Racing Form. “Preferably we'll be able to run her in the Spinster. Our second option is the Beldame. I've been very forthcoming with Keeneland and have asked if they will take my entry. There is also the possibility they would let my owners enter her with one of the other trainers they use in Kentucky.”

The Spinster is a “Win and You're In” race for the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff.

So far as the GII Beldame S. at Belmont, also scheduled to be run Sunday, goes, NYRA spokesman Pat McKenna said the matter is under review.

It was announced last week by Gulfstream that Crichton was among five trainers that were suspended after they were found to be in violation of house rules at the Florida track regarding the use of clenbuterol. The others were Georgina Baxter, Daniel Pita, Peter Walder and Gilberto Zerpa. The finding came after out-of-competition testing, which included hair and blood samples, was performed.

Crichton was suspended by Gulfstream and not by the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering, which means his status is not clear cut. Unlike a suspension issued by a racing commission, a suspension by one racetrack does not have to be upheld by another. However, as first reported by the Paulick Report, there is a clause in the Keeneland condition book listed under “special notices” that appears to cover the Crichton situation. It reads: “At the discretion of the stewards, and without notice, the entries of any person, or acceptance or transfer of any entries, may be refused.”

Keeneland's barn notes on Sunday and Monday listed Bajan Girl as a probable starter in the Spinster. Tuesday's notes did not include her name among a list of potential starters.

Owned by Robert Slack and Daniel Walters, Bajan Girl was fourth in the Love Sign S. at Colonial Downs in her most recent start and is three-for-13 lifetime.

A native of Jamaica, Crichton was the leading trainer at the 2020 Gulfstream Park West meet. He is 33-for-161 on the year for a winning percentage of 20%.
