Notable US-Bred & Sired Runners In Japan: May 22-23, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Chukyo and Tokyo Racecourses. This week's Group 1 feature is the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks), in which the popular white filly Sodashi (Jpn) (Kurofune) will attempt to protect her perfect five-for-five record while attempting the 2400-meter trip for the first time:

DAYTON TESORO (f, 3, Violence–Chelan Echo, by Lion Heart) outran odds of 20-1 to finish a respectable fourth on local debut over 1400 meters in a single juvenile appearance last November and is a candidate to improve with maturity and a bit more distance here. A $130K Keeneland September purchase, the chestnut is out of a half-sister to MSW Notoriously (Cherokee Run), SW Cherokee Echo (Cherokee Run) and GISP Smarty's Echo (Smarty Jones). 11th-CKO, Heian S.-G3, ¥68,000,000 ($625k), 4yo/up, 1900m
AMERICAN SEED (c, 4, Tapit–Sweet Talker, by Stormin Fever) made giant strides once switched to the dirt last fall, winning three starts by a combined 17 lengths, but he stubbed his toe when a distant 14th as the 2-5 favorite in the G3 March S. at Nakayama. The $825K KEESEP yearling, whose dam was a Grade I winner on the turf in 2005 before fetching $1.15 million at KEENOV, was rumored to have lost a shoe in the running and he gets Christophe Lemaire back in the saddle Saturday. American Seed is a full-brother to SW & GSP Sweet Tapper; and to the dam of recent GII Edgewood S. runner-up Barista (Medaglia d'Oro); and a half to GSP Perregaux (Distorted Humor). QUEEN'S V V (JPN) (f, 4, Honor Code–V V Goodnight, by Midnight Lute), a $360K in utero purchase at KEENOV in 2016, has punched well above her weight in Japan, with three wins from nine runs, including a half-length success over this track and trip when last seen Mar. 14 (see below, gate 15). Her Grade III-placed dam is a half-sister to GSW Gleam of Hope (City Zip) and to SW Forest Princess (Hansel). B-Kosho Bokujo

California Sire Vronsky Passes Away

Successful California-based stallion Vronsky (Danzig–Words of War, by Lord at War {Arg}), the sire of Grade I winner What A View, passed away from an apparent heart attack after successfully covering a mare at Harris Farms, according the farm's General Manager Jonny Hilvers. Vronsky was 22 years old.

Bred by Arthur Hancock and Stonerside Ltd., Vronsky was a $1-million purchase out of the 2000 Keeneland September Sale and was a three-time winner at the races before entering stud in 2005 at E. W. 'Buddy' Johnston's Old English Rancho in Sanger, CA.

To date, Vronsky is the sire of 154 worldwide winners, including 12 black-type winners. In addition to Kilroe Mile hero What A View, he was also responsible for GII San Gabriel S. winner Norvsky and GIII Berkeley H. victor Poshsky. Vronsky, a half-brother to MGSW & MGISP E Dubai (Mr. Prospector) and to GISW and major producer No Matter What (Nureyev), has progeny earnings to date of over $15.8 million.

Saturday’s Insights: $1.5M Curlin Colt Debuts at Belmont

1st-BEL, $90K, Msw, 3yo, 7f, 1:00p.m.
Trainer Shug McGaughey unveils West Point, Siena Farm, Bobby Flay and Woodford Racing's FIRST CAPTAIN (Curlin), a $1.5 million purchase at the Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Select sale last summer. The colt is the first foal out of GSW & GISP America (A.P. Indy), a homebred for the Iron Chef. The 3-year-old sports a bullet four-furlong work in :48 1/5 at Payson Apr. 10, and most recently, registered a :48 4/5 (28/63) for the same distance at Belmont Apr. 17. Also suiting up for the first time is Shadwell's MAHAAMEL (Into Mischief). A $700,000 KEESEP buy, the Todd Pletcher trainee is out of Grade III winner Hot Stones (Bustin Stones), a half to Hot Mist (Tonalist), who won on debut last season. TJCIS PPs

Hronis Racing, Siena Farm, Summer Wind Equine and West Point's FLIGHTLINE (Tapit) takes off for John Sadler Saturday. Bred by Summer Wind, the colt realized a $1-million final bid at last summer's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. Out of Grade III winner Feathered (Indian Charlie), who also hit the board in the GI Frizette S., GI Starlet S. and GI American Oaks, the bay posted a sharp five-furlong work Apr. 18, stopping the watch in 1:00 2/5. Feathered, a $300,000 OBSMAR buy, was purchased by Summer Wind–in foal to War Front–for $2.35 million at KEENOV in 2016. MONEY MIKE (Into Mischief), a KEESEP graduate, makes his first start for the partnership of SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Racing and Stonestreet Stables. The $600,000 yearling purchase is the first foal out of MGSW Ahh Chocolate (Candy Ride {Arg}) and comes into this off several speedy works, including the latest a five-furlong move in 1:00 1/5 at Santa Anita Apr. 17. Simon Callaghan sends out SECRET WEAPON (Candy Ride {Arg}), a $650,000 KEESEP purchase. Campaigned by Qatar Racing and his breeder Peter Blum, the chestnut gets the services of Umberto Rispoli for this unveiling. TJCIS PPs

ANNUNCIATION (c, 3, Union Rags–Acquant, by Giant's Causeway) made up a ton of ground after missing the break over this track and trip Oct. 31 and graduated by a widening 3 1/2 lengths (see below, gate 3). The $230K Keeneland September yearling just failed by a neck after a similarly slow dispatch in a course-and-distance allowance Jan. 30 and should be a warm item to make amends here. Annunciation is out of a winning daughter of MGSW Social Queen (Dynaformer), the dam of GISW Force the Pass (Speightstown). Christophe Lemaire has ridden Annunciation in his first two starts and retains the call from gate two Saturday. B-Colts Neck Stables LLC (KY)

IRISH SENSE (c, 3, Quality Road–Miss Singhsix {Ire}, by Singspiel {Ire}) is one of four winners from five to race from his dam, winner of the GIII Obeah S. and runner-up in the GII Delaware H. despite her turf-leaning pedigree. A maiden winner at second asking going 1400 meters at Hanshin in December (video, gate 10), the $125K KEESEP purchase was a latest third when returning from a three-month winter freshening at Chukyo Mar. 13. Irish Sense has the rail draw, with Mirco Demuro in the irons. B-Normandy Farm LLC (KY)

12th-TOK, ¥21,000,000 ($194k), Allowance, 4yo/up, 1400m
LECCE BAROQUE (f, 4, Uncle Mo–My Fast One, by Elusive Quality) won her first two career outings over course and distance by 19 lengths combined–both times as the heavy favorite (see below, gate 10)–and most recently bounced back to something approaching her best with a second-place finish over 1200 meters at Nakayama Dec. 26. A $410K KEESEP yearling turned $525K OBS March breezer, Lecce Baroque is out of a half-sister to SW No Mo Dough (Uncle Mo) and SP Terrific Storm (Storm Cat). Lemaire will have to work out a trip from the outermost stall in the field of 16. B-MMM Stables (KY)
