Into Mischief Colt Takes Command Late Over Gulfstream Allowance Types

CHANGE OF COMMAND (c, 3, Into Mischief–Moi, by Medaglia d'Oro) made steady improvement over a trio of maiden attempts during the NYRA meets starting in late August–the last coming with a runner-up result at Aqueduct Nov. 4. Heading to Gulfstream, the bay found his stride to graduate by 6 1/2 lengths Dec. 17. Trying two turns for the first time, the 11-10 choice paced himself into the first turn just off of Cardinale (Speightstown). Shadowing the leader, the 3-year-old was given his cue at the three-eighths marker and took over the top spot. Cardinale proved a stubborn foe and the pair locked in a stretch battle, but it was Change of Command who gained the advantage in the shadow of the wire and won by a neck. “When that horse came back to him, he kind of went on from there,” Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey said. “As you saw around the turn, it looked like he was going to win by himself, and he did that the last time a little bit. He didn't want to finish as well as I'd like. I've got to do some work to figure things out. I hope this moves him forward. He had to kind of belly down and run, so that should help him. We'll take him back to Payson [Park] and find out.” Tied for the 12th highest price during the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, the winner is his dam's first to the races. The colt does have a 2-year-old half-sister by Instilled Regard and a yearling half-brother by Instagrand. A $750,000 purchase by OXO Equine at the 2016 Keeneland September Sale, Moi is a full-sister to Mrs McDougal (Medgalia d'Oro), the dam of GII Twilight Derby hero Seal Team (GB) (WarFront). Sunday Insights: Well-Bred Son Of Tapit And Lady Take Charge Debuts At Oaklawn

5th-OP, $115K, Msw, 2yo, 1 1/16m, 3:22 p.m. ET.
A $700,000 Keeneland September purchase by Willis Horton Racing and trained by Eddie Milligan Jr., WILL TAKE IT (Tapit) is the first to the post out of unraced Lady Take Charge (War Front).

The latter was the top-priced foal at the 2015 Keeneland November Sale when she was hammered down to Whisper Hill Farm for $3.2 million. Eclipse Award winner Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway), a daughter of Lady Take Charge's half-sister Charming (Seeking the Gold), was the overall topper when sold to John Sikura and Hill 'n' Dale Equine for $6 million.

Last year, Lady Take Charge produced a full-sister to Will Take It, who went to Sinandigan Stable at the Keeneland September Sale for $1.3 million.

The extended female family runs through influential second dam MGISW Take Charge Lady (Dehere), who is responsible for GI Florida Derby champ Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy), Horton's champion 3-year-old colt Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song), GI Beholder Mile winner As Time Goes By (American Pharoah), and Take Charge Brandi's half-brother and top-five first-crop sire Omaha Beach (War Front). Trained by Todd Pletcher, Don Alberto and Bridlewood Farm homebred Carolo Rapido (Curlin) is out of GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss). She was a Blandford Bloodstock buy last year during Fasig-Tipton's Fall Mixed Sale for $1.2 million while in-foal to Gun Runner. TJCIS PPS

SF Bloodstock bred Guarani (Speightstown), who will be making his first start for Three Chimneys Farm after they purchased him for $425,000 at Keeneland September. The Steve Asmussen trainee is out of MGSP Czechers (Indian Charlie), who also produced his full-brother, G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen S. hero Switzerland. TJCIS PPS

Desert Debuters: Pricy World of Trouble Colt On Debut

In this series, we will have a look at American-bred first-time juvenile starters (through the end of 2023) and debuting 3-year-olds in maiden races at the tracks of the Emirates Racing Authority–predominantly Meydan and occasionally Jebel Ali–with a specific focus on pedigree and/or performance in a sales ring in the meetings leading up to the Dubai World Cup program Saturday, Mar. 30, 2024. Meydan will host racing mainly on Fridays, with the exception of Super Saturday Mar. 2 and Dubai World Cup night. Here are the horses of interest for the Saturday program at Jebel Ali:

3rd-JEB, AED72,000 ($19,606), Maiden, NH2yo/SH3yo, 1200m
PRINCIDENT (World of Trouble), a $75,000 Keeneland September acquisition by Powerstown Stud, caught the eye during the under-tack preview for this year's Arqana May Breeze-Up Sale (see below) and was knocked down to Rabbah Bloodstock for €210,000, the second-priciest of 30 juveniles reported as sold from the first crop of his sire (by Kantharos). Racing in the colors of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed al Maktoum, the Feb. 12 produce is out of the MSP Truth in the Lies (Hold Me Back), a half-sister to five-time New Jersey-bred stakes winner Trueamericanspirit (Is It True).

 

 

Fayadh (Liam's Map) is the latest foal to make the races out of Class Included (Include), whose 11 career stakes successes includes the GIII Ballerina S. at Hastings Park. A $100,000 KEESEP purchase by former jockey turned bloodstock agent Ted Durcan/Longways, the chestnut colt fetched €148,148 from owner Ali Haddad at the Goffs Dubai Breeze-Up at Meydan this past March (see below). Friday Insights: Expensive Curlin Colt Debuts for Courtlandt at the Big A

CORPORATE POWER (Curlin) is the second foal to race out of Road to Victory (Quality Road), winner of the GII Golden Rod S. at two and placed in the GII Mother Goose S. the next season. The mare was acquired by Stonestreet for $1.45 million in foal to War Front at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, and while that debut-winning colt Willakenzie was bought back for $575,000 at Keeneland September, Corporate Power was hammered down to Don Adam's Courtlandt Farm for $925,000 at the same auction last fall. The female family includes Group 1 winner Moanin (Henny Hughes), current leading freshman sire in Japan by winners with 35. Juddmonte homebred Sardis (Into Mischief) is a half-brother to GIII Cecil B. DeMille S. winner Verbal (Flintshire {GB}) and GSP Toledo (Into Mischief) and is out of a half-sister to MSW/MGSP Seismic Wave (Tapit) and to the dam of this year's G3 Ballyroan S. runner-up Valiant King (GB) (Roaring Lion). JUDGE RULES (Tapit) makes his first trip to the races for owner/breeder Barry K. Schwartz and trainer Christophe Clement. A May 18 foal, the bay looks to become the third winner from as many to the races for the owner's Princess Violet (Officer), who was second to Untapable (Tapit) in the 2014 GI Mother Goose S. and posted a career-best effort in taking the 2015 GI Madison S. at Keeneland.
