Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: Nov. 7. 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Sunday running at Hanshin and Tokyo Racecourses, featuring the much-anticipated debut of one of this year's breeze-up sales toppers:

Sunday, November 7, 2021
2nd-TOK, ¥9,680,000 ($85k), Maiden, 2yo, 1400mT
WALKER TESORO (f, 2, Speightstown–January Jones {Brz}, by Shirocco {Ger}) is the second foal from her Brazilian Group 1-winning dam, who was acquired privately by these breeders and mated to a sire with which they have experienced much success. Walker Tesoro returns to the course and distance of her Oct. 17 career debut, a solid runner-up effort from a high draw that should have her sitting on a win (see below, SC 16). Speightstown, the sire of 33 winners from 41 to race in Japan, has accounted for the owner's Rieno Tesoro, a stakes winner on dirt and Group 1-placed going a mile on turf against males. B-Mr & Mrs Kenji Ryotokuji (KY)

4th-HSN, ¥13,400,000 ($118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200m
CLOS DE MESNIL (f, 2, Practical Joke–Valiant Emilia {Per}, by Pegasus Wind) was bought back for $65K as a Keeneland November weanling in 2019, but improved into a $120K KEESEP yearling and attracted a sales-topping bid of $750K from trainer Hideyuki Mori at this year's OBS March Sale after breezing an eighth of a mile in the bullet time of :9 4/5. The Mar. 18 foal was the most expensive of the eight juveniles Mori signed for at OBSMAR. Each of the remaining seven horses has already started, led by Dugat (Practical Joke), a $190K purchase who broke his maiden for this filly's owner Susumu Fujita by four lengths at Hanshin Oct. 16. Clos de Mesnil's third dam produced Peruvian GSW/G1SP Thundering Emilia (Thunder Gulch), whose son Helium (Ironicus) upset this year's GII Tampa Bay Derby, and she is also the dam of Peruvian G1SW Emilia's Moon (Malibu Moon). Quality Road Anchors Lane’s End Roster for 2022

Quality Road (Elusive Quality–Kobla, by Strawberry Road {Aus}), whose 'TDN Rising Star' son Corniche figures one of the favorites for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Nov. 5, will remain at $150,000 for the upcoming breeding season at William S. Farish's Lane's End Farm, which released its stud fees Monday.

The 15-year-old stallion is in the midst of another outstanding season, with nine stakes winners to his credit. Three of those have come at the graded level, led by the aforementioned Corniche, who topped this year's OBS April Sale on a bid of $1.5 million from Peter Fluor and K.C. Weiner's Speedway Stable and ran his record to two wins from two starts with a 3 1/4-length victory in the GI American Pharoah S. at Santa Anita Oct. 1. Astronaut upset the GII Del Mar H. and is a candidate for the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf, while Dr Post impressed in the GIII Monmouth Cup while also placing in the GI TVG Pacific Classic and GI Woodward S.

Quality Road was the leading sire by average (more than one sold) at this year's bell-weather Keeneland September Sale, his 34 yearlings fetching an average of $472,794. Immediately behind Quality Road were Curlin and Into Mischief. Quality Road was represented by two seven-figure sellers at KEESEP, led by a $1.6 million half-brother to GSW & MGISP Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow) and GISW Girvin (Tale of Ekati) that was hammered down to Woodford Racing & West Point Thoroughbreds. He was also represented by a $1-million half-sister to GI Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming (Bodemeister) at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga.

The first crop of Quality Road's son City of Light has met with tremendous reception. The 7-year-old is the second-leading freshman sire of yearlings behind only Justify and he was responsible for the overall Keeneland September topper, a $1.7-million son of MSP Anchorage (Tapit) that was purchased by Woodford, West Point and Talla Racing. City of Light gets a bump from $40,000 up to $60,000 for 2022.

New to the Lane's End roster for 2022 is Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}), whose stud fee has yet to be set.

Munnings’s Eda Easy As You Like in the Anoakia

Baoma Corp's Eda (Munnings) made light work of four fellow juvenile fillies to post her first stakes success in facile fashion in Sunday's Anoakia S. at Santa Anita.

Away without incident from the inside stall, the bay was beaten for speed, then angled away from the fence to stalk the pace outside of Shes Bout a Mover (Mastery) through a quarter in :21.90 and a half in :44.98. Pressing past the front-runner with a minimum of fuss at the head of the lane, Eda was under very little urging from Flavien Prat, who took a quick peek to his left to look at the infield screen to make sure the race was in safe keeping. In the end, Eda had 2 1/4 lengths to spare on the maiden Lady T (Into Mischief), while her stablemate Benedict Canyon (Midnight Lute) ran on for third.

Second, but promoted to first in her June 19 debut going five furlongs over this surface, Eda missed by a head to Elm Drive (Mohaymen) in the GII Sorrento S. at Del Mar Aug. 6. That effort established Eda as the clear favorite for the GI Del Mar Debutante, but she dropped back to finish fifth after attending a punishing early pace.

Bred in Kentucky by Nate McCauley, who successfully raced Munnings's daughter Venetian Harbor in partnership, Eda was a $240,000 Keeneland September yearling who matured into a $550,000 OBS March juvenile after breezing in :10 flat. Show Me is the dam of a weanling filly by Karakontie (Jpn) and returned to Munnings for her most recent covering. Eda is the 53rd black-type winner for her sire. Into Mischief Colt Survives Race-Long Duel To Graduate

8th-Santa Anita, $63,000, Msw, 10-15, 2yo, 1m, 1:37.55, ft, 1/2 length.
BAROSSA (c, 2, Into Mischief–Bouquet Booth {GSW, $527,279}, by Flower Alley) was sent off the lukewarm 14-5 favorite in a strong-looking two-turn maiden Friday at Santa Anita got just the better of a race-long tussle with Durante (Distorted Humor) to graduate at third asking. The latter, drawn the inside for his first try at a distance of ground, was aggressively ridden and led into the first turn, but was joined immediately to his outside by Barossa and the two went a swift opening quarter in :23 flat. Still moving along at a good clip through a half-mile in :47.48, Durante retained the call as they hit the stretch, met and held the persistent challenge of Barossa deep into the final furlong and gave way grudingly. The winning margin was a half-length. A $775,000 Keeneland September yearling, Barossa was a well-beaten fourth in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden at Del Mar July 25, but attended a good pace in his two-turn debut at Del Mar Aug. 27 and tired fractionally to finish third to Oviatt Class (Bernardini) subsequently third to 'TDN Rising Star' Corniche (Quality Road) and Pappacap (Gun Runner) in the GI Frontrunner S. at this venue Oct. 1. Bouquet Booth, who hails from the same female family as MGISW Riskaverse (Dynaformer) and Horse of the Year Havre de Grace (Saint Liam), was most recently bred to Into Mischief's son Audible. Sales history: $775,000 Ylg '20 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 3-1-0-1, $49,200. Click for the Equibase.com chartin  or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.
