‘Quality’ Colt Debuts In Stakes Company

After New Mexico trainer Todd Fincher signed the winning ticket at $870,000 on a colt by Quality Road at last year's Keeneland September Sale, Bob Baffert was overheard saying to Fincher and his owner Lori Owens, “You bought my horse.” The gray, now named BYE BYE BOBBY gets going in Tuesday's Zia Park Juvenile S., the first of seven stakes on the Zia Park Derby undercard. Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, the April foal is out of Revel in the Win (Red Bullet) and is a half-brother to GSW Poker Player (Harlan's Holiday), the MSW War Treaty (Scat Daddy) and the stakes-placed Coleman Rocky (Harlan's Holiday). The female family also includes the talented turf horse of the mid- to late-1990s Ops Smile (Caveat). “This is the top of the line and that's where we all strive to get to some day,” Fincher told the TDN's Brian DiDonato at KEESEP last fall. “He was just perfect-bodied, perfectly balanced. The breeding was there. We couldn't fault him in any way.” Bye Bye Bobby worked a bullet five-eighths from the gate in :59 1/5 Nov. 3 and is the 3-1 second choice in a field of seven.

Like Father, Like Son at Meydan

The late Arrogate (Unbridled's Song) turned in arguably the most impressive effort in a G1 Dubai World Cup by a horse not named Dubai Millennium (GB), dropping back to last after being roughed up at the break, rallying wide on the turn and galloping past none other than Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) to win the 2017 renewal in jaw-dropping fashion. Taking Names became the first starter in Dubai for his GI Breeders' Cup Classic-winning stallion in Thursday's second race at Meydan, and while much more straight-forward, was similarly impressive in dotting up by an impressive 8 1/4 lengths on debut. He becomes the first 'TDN Rising Star' for Arrogate and his eighth winner overall

Ridden forward from gate four by Pat Dobbs, the Sheikh Obaid colourbearer argued the pace inside of Summer Is Tomorrow (Summer Front) for the opening three furlongs and held that spot at the fence as the field rounded the turn. Allowed to stride into the lead with 500 metres to race, Taking Names kicked in upper stretch, was a touch tardy switching his leads and scampered home under hands and heels riding to score by daylight.

“He was very good out of the gates,” Dobbs told Tom Stanley before weighing out. “He's bred to stay and he's got to the line very good. Very pleased. My lad's pretty fit. Shane Ryan has done a great job with him in the gates. Every time he goes in, he's getting better and he's getting more mature. This lad was very professional tonight and I'm delighted the way he's going.”

A $100,000 Keeneland September yearling acquisition, Taking Names was hammered down for $150,000 at this year's OBS June Sale after breezing a quarter-mile in :21 3/5.  A half-brother to Mani Bhavan (Storm Boot), GISW, $267,000; Hear the Ghost (Ghostzapper), GSW, $382,762; and Closing Bell (Tapit), SW & GISP-US, $560,582, Taking Names is out of a winning half-sister to MSW/MGSP Turkappeal (Turkoman), the dam of GSW Pink Champagne (Awesome Again). Third dam Silken Doll, a half-sister to GISW turfer Turk Passer (Turkoman), was responsible for Sovereign Award-winning 2-year-old filly Silken Doll (Storm Cat), whose champion son Speightstown (Gone West) has become an influential sire at WinStar Farm. Silken Cat was also the dam of the late MGSW/GISP Irap (Tiznow) and of Cableknit (Unbridled's Song), dam of G1 Maktoum Challenge R3 winner Capezzano (Bernardini).

Rehear is the dam of a yearling Honor Code Filly, a weanling colt by West Coast and was most recently bred to The Factor.

Rock Your World Retired To Spendthrift

Rock Your World (Candy Ride {Arg}–Charm the Maker, by Empire Maker), who defeated GI Kentucky Derby winner and GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic runner-up Medina Spirit (Protonico) in the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby in his first start on the dirt, has been retired from racing and will enter stud in 2022 at Spendthrift Farm. The nursery had previous announced the acquisition in last April.

The handy winner of a six-furlong turf sprint on career debut at Santa Anita Jan. 1, the $650,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase took the one-mile Pasadena S. Feb. 27 by a widening 2 1/4-lengths and proved not for catching in the Santa Anita Derby, reporting home a 4 1/4-length winner. Compromised by a horrendous start in the Run for the Roses, Rock Your World was a battling runner-up in the Shared Belief S. at Del Mar Aug. 29, dropping a 1 1/4-length decision to Medina Spirit. Bred by Ron and Deborah McAnally and trained by John Sadler for Hronis Racing and Talla Racing, Rock Your World retires with a record of 7-3-1-0 and earnings of $612,100.

Rock Your World's dam was a stakes winner and twice placed at Grade I level going long as a 2-year-old and is also responsible for GSP She's Our Charm (Candy Ride {Arg}) and a yearling Curlin colt that fetched $825,000 from D. Hatman Thoroughbreds at this year's Keeneland September sale.

Rock Your World is a maternal grandson of GSW Charm The Giant (Ire) (Giant's Causeway), the dam of GSW Liam the Charmer (Smart Strike), while MGSW/GISP third dam Olympic Charmer (Olympio) also bred MGSP Charming Legacy (Ire) (Danehill), whose daughter Light of Darkness (Red Rocks {Ire}) won this year's G3 Istanbul Trophy in addition to the Turkish 1000 Guineas.

“Rock Your World is a fast Santa Anita Derby winner with a wonderful blend of looks, pedigree and sire power,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “He's a $650,000 yearling and you can see why. He's one imposing individual and as good-looking of a Candy Ride as you'll find. Rock Your World possesses a true classic dirt pedigree, with Empire Maker and Giant's Causeway as his first two broodmare sires. In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Tokyo and Hanshin Racecourses. SHIRAKINU (f, 2, Frosted–Meets Expectations, by Valid Expectations), a $335K graduate of last year's Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase, fought on bravely from a high gate in her debut, but gave way late to finish second, beaten 3/4 of a length going this distance at Tokyo Oct. 30 (see below, SC 15). The Godolphin colorbearer is a half-sister to dual-surface GISW World of Trouble (Kantharos) and SW Money Or Love (J Be K) and her dam is a half-sister to the multiple graded-stakes winner Bucchero (Kantharos).B-Darsan Inc & Godolphin (FL)
