More Than Ready Represented By First Japanese Stakes Winner

Jean Gros (More Than Ready) became the 214th worldwide black-type winner–and first in Japan–for his legendary sire with a spectacular performance in Sunday's $333,992 Listed Marguerite S. at Hanshin Racecourse.

The 6-5 favorite was away alertly, but was checked hard off heels prior to the entry to the turn, perhaps having caused his own problems. The full-brother to Tom's Ready, MGSW & GISP, $1,036,267, soon recovered from that bit of trouble and traveled strongly on the turn before easing off heels and into the four path on the swing for home. The dark bay swooped in front with about a furlong to race and edged clear to score by a widening 1 1/2 lengths with ears pricked (see below, SC 7). The final time of 1:08 flat was about 0.2 seconds faster than the six-furlong split in the 1400-meter G3 Hankyu Hai for older horses in the following race. Jean Gros is one of 18 winners from 20 to race in Japan for the now 25-year-old More Than Ready.

“He has tremendous speed and was very easy to ride today. He is a very talented colt,” commented winning jockey Yutaka Take.

A $130,000 buyback out of the 2020 Keeneland September sale, Jean Gros was knocked down to this trainer for $265,000 at OBS March the following spring after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat.

Barren to Arrogate for 2020, Goodbye Stranger foaled an Audible filly last March and was bred back to Horse of the Year Authentic.

CUTE VILLAIN (f, 3, Arrogate–She Be Wild, by Offlee Wild) is the latest foal out of the Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly of 2009 and cost Katsumi Yoshida $550K at last year's Fasig-Tipton Florida sale after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat (see below). The Mar. 31 foal becomes the ninth Japanese starter for her late sire, six of which have already tasted success at the races. That number includes wide-margin debut winner Jasper Great, who is out of a mare by Offlee Wild's sire, Wild Again. B-Nancy Mazzoni (KY)

 

 

4th-TOK, ¥14,250,000 ($124k), Allowance, 3yo, 1600m
FOOLISH HOBBY (f, 3, Arrogate–Flatter Up, by Flatter) is another of those half-dozen Arrogate winners in Japan, having led home an exacta for the sire when besting next-out graduate Shailene on 1800-meter debut at Hanshin Nov. 27 (, SC 7). The first foal from a Grade III-placed mare, Foolish Hobby fetched $260K at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase and matured into a $450K FTFMAR breezer (:21 1/5). Foolish Hobby is from the female family of GISW and young sire Midnight Storm (Pioneerof the Nile). Three Chimneys acquired Flatter Up for $300K with this foal in utero at KEENOV in 2018. KANARRA CREEK (c, 3, Kitten's Joy–Wilson's Creek, by Bernardini), a $160K KEESEP acquisition on behalf of Godolphin by Paca Paca Farm, is out of a daughter of Darley-bred River Street (GB) (Machiavellian), a full-sister to the late and influential Street Cry (Ire) and to the stakes-placed dam of European champion 2-year-old colt Shamardal (Giant's Causeway). The colt's dam Wilson's Creek was acquired by William Harrigan/Miacomet Farm for $80K in foal to Midshipman at KEENOV in 2018. B-William B Harrigan & Mike Pietrangelo (KY)

MOZU CLEOPATRA (JPN) (f, 3, American Pharoah–Audubon Park, by Candy Ride {Arg}), acquired in utero for $130K at KEENOV in 2018, was purchased by the Capital Systems ownership group for $383,526 as a yearling at the 2020 JRHA Select Sales. The filly's winning dam is a daughter of Zealous Cat (Storm Cat), whose produce include GSW Tapicat (Tapit), GSP Enthusiasm (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and the dam of Japanese Group 3-placed Dieu du Vin (Jpn) (Declaration of War). Broodmare of the Year Leslie’s Lady Dies

Clarkland Farm's 2016 Broodmare of the Year Leslie's Lady (Tricky Creek–Crystal Lady, by Stop the Music), whose produce include leading sire Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday) and four-time Eclipse Award winner Beholder (Henny Hughes), died Jan. 24 at the farm, the Blood-Horse reports. She was 26 years old.

Bred in Kentucky by David Hager II, Leslie's Lady was an $8,000 short yearling purchase from Hager's Idle Hour Farm at Keeneland January in 1997 and was acquired by owner James T. Hines for $27,000 from the Margaux Farm draft at the Keeneland September Sale later that fall. Winner of four of nine juvenile starts for trainer Bob Holthus, including the Hoosier Debutante S., Leslie's Lady was runner-up in the 1999 Martha Washington S. and showed consistent form throughout the balance of her career, winning a total of five races for earnings of $187,014.

Leslie's Lady was acquired by Clarkland as a 10-year-old for $100,000 in foal to Orientate from Hines Estate at Keeneland November in 2006 and the purchase looked a shrewd one just over a year later when the mare's foal of 2005, an $80,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling turned $180,000 OBS March breezer later named Into Mischief, became a Grade I winner for Spendthrift Farm in the CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park.

Leslie's Lady visited Henny Hughes in 2009 and the result of that mating was Beholder, a $180,000 purchase by Spendthrift out of the 2011 Keeneland September Sale, who won no fewer than 11 Grade I races–including three Breeders' Cup events and a breathtaking score against males in the GI TVG Pacific Classic–en route to amassing career earnings of better $6.1 million.

As her produce continued to make waves on the racetrack and as Into Mischief became a sire of considerable importance at Spendthrift, Leslie's Lady's young offspring became increasingly sought-after at public auction. M.V. Magnier paid a Keeneland September sales-topping $3 million for her foal of 2015, a Scat Daddy colt named Mendelssohn, who went on to take the 2017 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and the 2018 G2 UAE Derby (by 18 1/2 lengths) and was on the board in the GI Runhappy Travers S. and GI Jockey Club Gold Cup before heading off to stud at Coolmore.

The latter nursery's American Pharoah was the sire of Leslie's Lady's foal of 2018, a filly, that was purchased by Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm for a sale-best $8.2 million at KEESEP in 2019 (click here for more from Chris McGrath), the most expensive filly ever sold at Keeneland. Named America's Joy, she sadly passed away in a training accident last August.

Leslie's Lady's 3-year-old daughter Marr Time (Not This Time) is in training with Brad Cox and was named a 'TDN Rising Star' for a debut victory at Keeneland Oct. 28. The mare's final foal is a 2-year-old Kantharos filly named Love You Irene. The filly that Leslie's Lady was carrying at the time of her purchase by Clarkland, the now 15-year-old mare Daisy Mason, was hammered down to the partnership of Whisper Hill and Gainesway for $475,000 in foal to Not This Time at Keeneland November last fall.

THE KING (JPN) (c, 3, Curlin–Alluring Star, by Exchange Rate) is the first foal from his dam, second to Caledonia Road (Quality Road) in the 2017 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and purchased by Katsumi Yoshida with this colt in utero for $925K at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale. A Jan. 28 foal, The King was offered at the 2019 JRHA Select Sale and repaid a fair bit of the investment, hammering for ¥82 million ($754,400), while the now 2-year-old half-sister by Heart's Cry (Jpn) made ¥40 million ($372,820) at the same event in 2020. The King was a useful fifth on his career debut at this venue back in September. B-Northern Racing

11th-CKO, Shinzan Kinen-G3, ¥76.8m ($664k), 3yo, 1600mT
MOZU GOLD BARREL (f, 3, Optimizer–Sweeter Still {Ire}, by Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), a $1,500 in utero purchase at KEENOV in 2018, ran to the money in her debut to score by a measured half-length at long odds-on going 1400 meters over this course Dec. 19 (see below, SC 1). The $190K KEESEP acquisition is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Kameko (Kitten's Joy) and opts for this over Monday's sex-restricted G3 Fairy S. (see below). Neither US-bred or -sired, MODICA (AUS) (f, 2, American Pharoah–More Than Real, by More Than Ready) has plenty of appeal to an American audience. The early September foal, who spots her Northern Hemisphere rivals a fair bit of maturity, is the latest produce out of Bobby Flay's 2010 GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine, who was acquired by Australian bloodstock agent James Bester for $675,000 at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton November sale. All five of the mare's previous starters are winners, including SW Miss Debutante (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). Modica, an A$260,000 ($201,089) purchase out of last year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, is a maternal granddaughter of MSW Miss Seffens (Dehere), whose daughter Miss Always Ready (More Than Ready) produced GI BC Juvenile Turf hero Structor (Palace Malice) and GSP 'TDN Rising Star' Always Carina (Malibu Moon). 11th-NKY, Fairy S.-G3, ¥70.6m ($611k), 3yo, f, 1600mT
SPEED GLAMOUR (f, 3, Into Mischief–Island Escape, by Petionville) failed to run a poor race in four appearances at two and earned a crack at this level with a narrow graduation going this trip at Chukyo Dec. 5 (see below, SC 14). A half-sister to MGSW Tricky Escape (Hat Trick {Jpn}), the February-foaled bay was bought back on a bid of $250K at Keeneland September in 2020 but blossomed into a $500K purchase at last year's OBS March Sale.
