Haughty Dusts Rivals in Penn Oaks

Having been scratched from the GIII Soaring Softly S. last weekend, 'TDN Rising Star' HAUGHTY (f, 3, Empire Maker–Soaring Emotions, by Kingmambo) was re-routed for Friday's $150,000 Penn Oaks at Penn National and may have been a touch ring-rusty, but proved far too classy for her four overmatched rivals. A bit hesitant to load and on edge waiting for the gates to spring, the 2-5 chalk was tugging for her head as they raced under the wire with a circuit of the soft-rated turf course to travel as 60-1 outsider and turf debutante Irie Empress (Shackleford) went along at a snail's pace. Flavien Prat had the favored settled better entering the turn and cut the ribbons approaching the quarter pole, and though she drifted wide into the stretch and took enough time to gather in the front-runner, Haughty never felt the stick and waltzed under the line the handiest of winners. Somewhat controversially disqualified and placed third from an apparent debut victory at Belmont last September, the $70,000 Keeneland September buyback turned $310,000 OBS April breezer earned the 'Rising Star' designation on the strength of a four-length romp at Keeneland the following month. Despite a 16-day turnaround and some uncertainty as to whether she would make the race, Haughty gave an outstanding account of herself in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf when third and beaten three-parts of a length. Violence Colt Turns In ‘Strong’ Debut, Earns ‘Rising Star’ Nod

Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's Forte (Violence) was no secret to the betting public as the heavy 1-5 favorite for the Friday lid-lifted at Belmont Park and ran away from his overmatched rivals down the lane to earn 'TDN Rising Star' accolades.

The$80,000 Keeneland November weanling turned $110,000 Keeneland September acquisition had registered three works since shipping up from trainer Todd Pletcher's South Florida base at Palm Beach Downs and signaled his readiness with a best-of-24 half-mile from the gate that was timed in :48 flat May 20, just outworking Summonyourcourage (Practical Joke), who was third when making his first career appearance at Churchill Friday afternoon.

Debuting in the Repole blue-and-orange, Forte was not the quickest away and was under a hustling ride from third behind a :22.43 opening quarter. Pulled out three wide to deliver his challenge as they neared the stretch, the prohibitive chalk engaged pacesetting Wasabi Boy (Lord Nelson x Gas Station Sushi) a furlong and a half from home, got a few left-handed reminders from Irad Ortiz, Jr. and was in hand for the final sixteenth of a mile. The winning margin was 7 3/4 lengths, while Wasabi Boy was over eight lengths ahead of the rest of the field.

Forte is the first foal from his dam, herself a four-time stakes winner and a half-sister to a pair of stakes horses. Queen Caroline is also the dam of a yearling colt by Uncle Mo and is was most recently bred to Authentic. The colt's third dam is a half-sister to Contrive (Storm Cat), the dam of champion 2-year-old filly Folklore (Tiznow). This is also the family of GSW Tizahit (Tiznow), GSP Divided Attention (A.P. Indy), GSP Iqbaal (Medaglia d'Oro) and Japanese Triple Crown hero Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

MOZU GOLD BARREL (f, 3, Optimizer–Sweeter Still {Ire}, by Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) validated 1-2 favoritism in winning her maiden cozily on debut over 1400 meters at Chukyo in late December (see below, SC 1) and drops precipitously in class and is back in trip off a pair of competitive efforts at Group 3 level over a mile in her last two starts. Breeder Timothy Thompson acquired this filly's Grade III-winning dam for $1,500 at Keeneland November in 2018 and saw the mare's value begin to skyrocket when her foal of 2017, a Kitten's Joy colt named Kameko, won the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at the tail end of 2019. Kameko would go on to add the 2020 G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas and Mozu Gold Barrel fetched $190K at KEESEP that fall. A half-sister to G1 Racing Post Trophy hero Kingsbarns (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Group 3 winner Belle Artiste (Ire) (Namid {GB}), Sweeter Still has foaled fillies by Kitten's Joy in each of the last two seasons.
