Speightstown Colt Soars To Debut Win At Meydan

FALCON OF ARABIA (c, 3, Speightstown–Lawn Party {SP-US}, by Medaglia d'Oro) made a winning debut over the main track on Friday. The colt led pillar-to-post and coasted home to win by 1 1/4 lengths. He was pressed by Auto Bahn (Arg) (Asiatic Boy {Arg}) the entire way around. It was 10 1/4 lengths back to the third-place horse, King Of Luck (GB) (New Bay {GB}). “He has to be nice to do that first time,” said O'Shea of the Falcon Racing Team-owned colt. “He has a nice temperament, a good pedigree and he was very professional. He was getting a weight pull from the top horse [Auto Bahn] but he'd had a run and we hadn't.” After selling twice as a yearling, the chestnut was offered by Top Line Sales at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale and caught the eye of trainer Bhupat Seemar after breezing an eight of a mile in :10 3/5. Falcon Of Arabia is a half-brother to Stellar Agent (More Than Ready), who was third in both the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and the GII Miss Grillo S., as well as the stakes-winning Anaconda (Pioneerof The Nile). His dam was covered by Epicenter last spring. Second dam Fiery Pursuit (Carson City) won the GII Louisville Breeders' Cup S., while third dam Engaging (Private Account) was a half-sister to the outstanding Eclipse Champion Juvenile Filly Flanders (Seeking The Gold), who would go on to produced Eclipse Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Surfside to the cover of Seattle Slew. Not This Time’s Waitlist Proves Toughest On Tampa Debut

WAITLIST (c, 3, Not This Time–Grandezza, by Scat Daddy) opened his account in highly impressive fashion at first asking going nine furlongs over the Tampa turf course Saturday afternoon. By the sire of recently crowned champion Up to the Mark and sent out by that one's trainer Todd Pletcher, the $240,000 Keeneland September acquisition was void of early speed and settled one from the tail. Asked to improve his position leaving the five-furlong pole by Emisael Jaramillo, the dark bay colt had tacked on to the back of the leading group and raced in about seventh position entering the second turn. Consigned to an overland trip around the bend, Waitlist had no choice but to launch his bid five deep off the final corner. He confronted narrow second favorite and perfect-trip Stop the Press (Uncle Mo)–a $1.5-million Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling trying the grass after three unplaced efforts on the dirt–nearing the midstretch marker, was overtaken for a stride or two with time ticking away and re-rallied to take it by a neck at a starting price of 44-5, double his morning line of 4-1. Breeder David McCarty paid $210,000 for Grandezza at the 2016 Keeneland November Sale and bought her back on a bid of $340,000 at Keeneland September the following year. A maiden winner of better than $134,000 from ages two to four, Grandezza is also represented by a yearling colt by Yoshida (Jpn) and she is due to Audible this season. Waitlist's second dam Tap Mate (Pleasant Tap) is a full-sister to GSW & GISP Tap Day and to Street Mate (Street Cry {Ire}), whose Grade I-winning daughter and $2-million earner Bell's the One (Majesticperfection) sells as part of the Lothenbach Dispersal Tuesday at Fasig-Tipton. Tuscan Gold A New ‘Rising Star’ For Medaglia d’Oro

Tuscan Gold (Medaglia d'Oro) debuted with an educational–if a bit troubled–fourth-place effort behind sales-topping stablemate and 'TDN Rising Star' Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) and fellow seven-figure seller Change In Command (Into Mischief) going a mile at Aqueduct Nov. 4. Sierre Leone did his part to validate the effort with a near-miss second in the GII Remsen S., while Change of Command has since won twice, including a Jan. 5 allowance at this track, and Tuscan Gold will presumably get his chance to further frank the form after being named a 'TDN Rising Star' himself Wednesday afternoon.

A somewhat surprising 8-5 second choice behind three-start maiden Skip the Line (Into Mischief–Bubbler) at 11-10 and getting Lasix for the first time, Tuscan Gold was toting the Gary Broad/Walmac silks this time around after debuting in the Lawrence colors and was trapped out five deep rounding the first turn while niggled along to keep pace by Tyler Gaffalione. Able to shift in to save some ground midway up the backstretch, the $600,000 Keeneland September grad was soon back into the bridle and was all the way up into third rounding the second bend. Looking a bit one-paced as he tried to get to front-running Skip the Line approaching the stretch, Tuscan Gold was popped the question in earnest and ran away impressively before galloping out with good energy.

Stonestreet bred Tuscan Gold from their very talented Valadorna (Curlin), runner-up to Champagne Room (Broken Vow) in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile and–appropriately enough–third in the GII Rachel Alexandra S. at three. A listed winner at the tail end of that season, she posted a career-high in the GIII Hilliard Lyons Doubledogdare S. at four in 2018.

A half-sister to former Chad Brown Grade I winner Complexity (Maclean's Music), Valadorna is also represented by a 2-year-old colt by Uncle Mo and a yearling colt by Tapit. Valadorna was not bred in 2023. Tuscan Gold is a 33rd 'Rising Star' for his recently turned 25-year-old stallion.

California Chrome’s Kabirkhan Up To The ‘Challenge’

KABIRKHAN (c, 4, Califorrnia Chrome–Little Emily, by Castledale {Ire}) continued his fairy-tale run at the Dubai Racing Carnival, as he raced prominently following a bit of a sluggish dispatch and powered home late to easily take out Friday's G1 Al Maktoum Challenge at Meydan. Returning just a fortnight after annexing a 2000-metre handicap, the $12,000 Keeneland September bargain raced ahead of midfield in about fifth position as First Constitution (Chi) (Constitution) burned plenty of fuel to inject some pace into his race for the commonly owned GIII Lukas Classic winner Clapton (Brethren). Three wide and right there to pounce for the run around the turn, the chestnut with the big white blaze–his Dubai World Cup winning sire's body double–went for home three off the inside and had four lengths on Franz Strauss (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) in a solid clocking for the 1900 metres. Trainer Chad Summers indicated pre-race that they would be content to race Clapton wide so as not to be trapped inside as they were when finishing down the field in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic when last seen. Five deep on the circle, Clapton plugged on gamely for Antonio Fresu and managed to cling on for third. Kabirkhan is the first Northern Hemisphere Group 1 winner for the expatriated California Chrome and a first Thoroughbred Group 1 winner for the affable Doug Watson.
